Hi all.
I currently have a 2013 Passat 2.0tdi and have a question with regard to the oil temperature of the car. On the motorway the temp sits at around 110°C. In town it does drop to between 103 - 107°C. If I boot it on the motorway it does rise I have had it to 121°C. ... Read more
Hi all
I am still rattling around in my i40 diesel. Four years old next spring, currently with 104,000 miles clocked. Been a good workhorse and very reliable apart from initial clutch issues.
In June the auto stop, start ceased working, so when it was colllected by the main dealer for its 100k service at the end of July I mentioned this. Anyway when the car was returned to me later that day, I was advised that it probably needed a good run !
It still isn't working now. It lives on the motorway and covers about 3000 miles a month.
Anyone know anything about the technology behind these systems or encountered the same problem
Thanks. Read more
There are very few Euro 6 cars without stop-start so you might have trouble finding one.
And remember that anything over 3 years is acceptable as conventional battery life....
Does anyone have any thoughts/experience of Costco's diesel. They call it Premium Diesel although it's the only diesel that they sell.... Read more
Oops....duplicate reply.
My son is in his late 20's and coming out of his company's car scheme. He's asled my advice on what to get. He's been spoilt by large diesel estates (Mondeo, Passat and Avensis) so although he doesn't need a large car he doesn't want to step back to his supermini days even though its usually just him in the car.
He does about 10-12k miles per annum, mainly motorways and A roads. He lives in the Midlands so there are car dealers aplenty. He wants a petrol 4/5 door car and has a wide budget of £8-£11k. He prefers the flexibility of buying rather than any form of lease. He fancies a V40 but these are very rare and even early examples of the current model are over budget. Failing that he quite likes the BMW 3 series but he has heeded my warnings about the potential running costs of a BMW in that price bracket. Also petrol models are again rare, although more common than the V40 if you go back further in age.
I have suggested a Focus (he thinks its too much of a family car), a Civic (maybe but prefers not to follow me), Astra (doesnt want to go back to VX after his old Corsa), Mazda 3 (just doesnt appeal), Kia/Hyundai SUV (had one on day hire didnt like it). To be fair none of these is really in the BMW/Volvo sector and just a tad dull I suspect.
Probably the next step is to consider the VW group offerings, maybe a Leon? Newer timing belt models should just be in budget. I know they drive well but I still remain to be convinced as to longevity of modern small turbos. But hey every car has its good and bad points.
So any suggestions please for a V40 substitute?

Just an update to say that the purchase has been made. The Volvo proved too expensive so it became a search in the £6-£8k bracket.
He's bought an immaculate Approved 2012 Mazda 3, black, 1.6 petrol, full service history, years MoT with new pads and recent tyres. Its got a Mazda backed 12 month warranty and breakdown cover. It had a full Mazda service before delivery.
He paid about £6.5k which is towards the high end but in a month of looking, everything cheaper either had significant gaps in history or condition issues. An Approved Civic would have been another £1.5k and those that came up were sold before we could see them.
Let's hope the Mazda proves to be the good buy that backroomer opinion generally suggests.
Just a bit of info, really ,that I’ve gathered recently through experience . It might just be useful to someone else.
For those who don’t know, I have the B Max with the (occasionally) infamous Powershift gearbox. There are various fixes available for this box, the first on the list being software updates and “clutch relearning”, whatever the Hell that is. There’s some doubt as to whether this is an electronic or mechanical problem, but Ford will ultimately replace control modules and clutches if cheaper fixes don’t work.... Read more
I have a 2015 Focus petrol 1.6 powershift which has developed a juddering slipping problem.
I took it to Ford, and they have said I need a new gearbox and clutch pack at a cost of £3500....
I test drove a Honda Civic yesterday. Even after raising the driver's seat to the maximum possible height and moving the seat forward, I could not see any part of the bonnet. This was a bit off-putting while driving.
I currently drive a Ford Focus. In the focus, I can see part of the bonnet and the driver's side edge. I can also see the 2 nozzles used to squirt water to clean the windshield. I find the 2 nozzles a good reference to centre myself in a lane. Also the visible drivers side bonnet edge is a good reference, to avoid straying accross lane markings on the road.
I know people say that you get used to driving without this reference. But I find that I need to concentrate much more to drive such cars, while a visible bonnet makes staying in lane much more easy. Not to mention maneouvering around tight spaces.
I understand that the only cars where you can see the bonnet now are the bigger cars
(Mondeos, etc.) and SUVs. However rather than being forced to buy such a car, just to see the bonnet, is there any accessories that I can fit, onto the bonnet of a car, to make it more visible?
One option I considered is car lashes, that you see on some cars. However I understand that driving at high speeds, can cause these to chafe the paint on the bonnet.
Anyone aware or can think of any other solution to this problem?
One option I have tried while driving in India, is to stick a plastic dart with a rubber sucker (the kind you get with kid's toy guns), on to the top edge of the headlights using strong glue. The problem I faced with this, was that when the car was parked, passers by had a tendency to try and pull them off.
Also not sure if this idea can work in the UK, when driving at Motorways at 70mph. Not sure if these glued-on darts could fly off, and cause damage to other vehicles?
Surely, I can't be the only person with this problem? And there must be some practical solution to this?
I know that modern rules don't permit anything on the bonnet that may endanger a pedestrian in the case of a collision. But shouldn't it be possible to fix something on the edge of the fender, that is either spring loaded or with a flexible rubber base?
Any ideas / suggestions would be welcome.... Read more

I'd be very grateful for advice on choosing engine oil for my 2014 Zafira B 1.8 petrol please.

I've run / owned a whole succession of both Petrol and Diesel VAG cars over the last few years, but more recently felt the urge to scratch a "convertible itch". Given my propensity for VAG cars I’d considered an EOS, but given the reported issues with the complex roof mechanism I decided to stick with a conventional (cloth) type hood. After much searching I came across the relatively unknown Vauxhall Cascada, which ticked all the boxes (cloth hood, petrol, manual and plenty of space – 4 seats).
I disposed of my car (Skoda Rapid Spaceback) via a well-known car buying company (seperate thread on here regarding the mostly positive experience) and purchased a Vauxhall Cascada 1.4 T SE. The actual ownership experience proved to be a disappointment, and, prompted by a mechanical issue (failed water pump), I opted to trade it in after just 6 weeks ownership. The Cascada was bought from a main dealer (and required a plane and boat to collect!), but the price was keen and I was fortunate enough to turn a small profit when trading in.... Read more
When answering questions about new car purchase it’s easy to forget the Skoda Rapid. I think it’s being dropped next year in favour of a new model, so there should be good deals around on run-out Rapids. It fills a rather narrow gap between the excellent and spacious Fabia and (ditto) Octavia: but like the similar Toledo praised above, it does a perfectly adequate job for a lowish price.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if these two cars keep popping up even after they are 'officially' dropped from the UK, as they may continue to be made for the Eastern and Southern European markets for a while, with some unsold new/pre-reg unuesed RHD versions (e.g. from Cyprus, where my Mazda3 came from) end up on Motorpoint (as mine did) or similar for 30%+ off the list price.
About a year ago I saw the Rapid being offered on the broker websites for not much over £10k - a bargain, given most C-sector cars were going for £14k - £18k on those websites even after discounts. At the time, only the unloved Nissan Pulsar came close on price and discount.
Hi there, I have a strange problem, the single rear fog light is not working, the fuse is good, the bulb is good but no power getting to the bulb holder. The amber dashboard light comes on ok. Strangely I have a towbar fitted ( it was fitted from new, I have had the car 2 years) and there is 12v getting to the trailer electrics rear fog light connection. Any ideas?! Read more
Thanks Elekie, I thought it would be towbar related and it was even simpler than that, I left in a 13 pin to 7 pin adaptor and of course that operated the microswitch in the towbar socket and cut off the fog lamp. I was just on the brink of running a cable from the towbar electrics to the rear fog. Adaptor now removed for the MOT this week and problem sorted, will know next time, thanks again...
I have the same car 2014 Passat 2.0TDI 140BHP. My oil temp on motorway cruising at say 78mph is usually between 98 and 103 on a very hot day. I have had it up to 109/110 on a hot day with a big load in the car but never anywhere near what you are saying. My fuel cons is brilliant ie up to late 50's touching almost 60 being sensible on a motorway run. Is your also good as I am suggesting you may have an injection high EGT fault. Also these periodically do a DPF regen cycle which I am not sure whether it is based on driving style or just mileage, possibly being stuck in regen could cause the high temp maybe ??
