(Disclaimer: this is intended to be extremely light-hearted; I'm not trying to provoke a Brexit/Bremain debate here and the thorny topic of immigration is way off my radar!)
If the UK somehow managed to leave the UK without too much fuss and "sovereignty" were suddenly restored - in other words, if the clock were turned back to 1972 - what would be your three motoring wishes?
Indicator stalk restored to the right hand side? A return to dim-dip lighting? Fuel sold in gallons? HGVs restricted to their 1964-1983 maximum weight of 32 tonnes? Crossing the channel by hovercraft? Read more

Let's hope our economy doesn't tank post-Brexit and we end up in a rerun of the 1970s. You can keep your BL.

just a quick post...just for interest...
I swapped my rear axle the other week, as this one was wonky...

I'm trying to git the trailing arm off, so I can see the damage to the bearing and the pin...
Is it just a case of whacking it with a hammer?
(I am hitting it on the red bits)
...or is it nigh impossible with it being off the car... Read more

This is not the place to hit the torsion bars from ... it's ok to pull from there

it should be hit , from the mounting bar below

car beginner

I recently bought a used 2009 Hyundai i30 from a used car dealer. Having had the car for 2 weeks now I've noticed some problems.

1. The coolant in the reservoir is black however the coolant in the radiator is a pale orange colour. The car was supposed to be serviced prior to me collecting it but this wasn't mentioned.

2. The aircon blows luke warm air and it ac button is always on when I switch the car on even if I switch it off.

3. The electric window is struggling to go up. It goes really slow and sometimes stops completely. I found this problem during the test drive and he agreed to fix it. When I collected the car he said it just needed oil but he didn't fix it at all The problem remains.

The car has a 3 month engine and gear box warranty. I'm just a bit p***ed none of this was addressed. He said the car was serviced before I collected it and he would fix the window. He didn't even mention the AC problem. I'm not good with cars and not sure what I should do next. Should I confront the slippery used car dealer or should I just take it to a local mechanic and pray for the best.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Playing devil's advocate, I wouldn't expect a coolant change to be part of a service. A "service" these days usually amounts to oil change, air filter replacement and a quick vac.

The orange coloured coolant isn't anything to worry about - coolant can be orange in colour. But the different coloured one in the tank is a worry. Could there be a blockage and that coolant in the expansion tank gone "bad"?...

Diesel Vectra with 75K miles on it started to make noise on depressing clutch pedal heard mostly at stops from neutral. Getting worse quickly. I think ould be central slave cylinder clutch release bearing. But the depot clutch houses tell me I need new dmf and clutch (which includes release bearing) total £800-£1000. I am sceptical that all this needs replacing if all the trouble is the bearing. They tell me the dmf breaks down and that when they take the clutch out they have to put a new one in. I don't know if I am being told porkies. Read more

thanks Richard for very comprehensive answer. I was taking it to Vauxhall main dealer for diagnosis only. Seems like I don't even have to do that now. I did get a quote from A1 Clutches for £300 to replace clutch release bearing only but when I called in of course they gave me all this stuff about replacing the lot. Now they can quote for doing the clutch release bearing and inspection of the other items and convincing me if anything else needs replacing (which I doubt very much). Maybe I have been sitting there with my foot on the clutch so I need to check that. Many years ago when i was a lad they told you never to do that so I thought I wasn't. I do slip the clutch reversing into a difficult corner back up our drive which will not have done it much good but no real alternative to that. Thanks again.

I hope Avant will leave this for a bit of discussion as it applies to Motoring as well.

Just lately I've been idly browsing dealer reviews on Facebook, some of which tend to follow a particular pattern. Conferring sainthood on the salesperson, insisting that he or she couldn't have done more for the customer, even if they'd paid for the car themselves, and then expressing boundless enthusiasm for returning to buy another car as soon as possible.

"Steve from xxxxx (company) couldn't have been more helpful, even if he'd managed to arrange world peace while he was selling me the car. He put me at my ease, explained all the financial options ( particularly the expensive ones) blinded me with his pearly white teeth and even arranged for a little voice to repeat incessantly whilst I was under hypnosis that the part ex he offered on my old car was extremely generous. The deal was clinched when he threw in an advertising sticker for his garage to go on my new number plate and a free air freshener. I'll certainly use xxxx again!"...

Is it ok to post something non defamatory about my bmw 640d that is being sold with lower mileage than I sold it for on the forum? And I might hasten to add being now sold with a full service history - when I sold it with a part service history? I really don’t want a new buyer being ripped off. I only want to mention the reg and not name the seller (as clearly the car may have been sold on after I sold it)? Read more

I was stupidly trying to squeeze past a bus today and accidentally bumped it, nothing major, knocked my mirror a little but I thought that was it. Parked up, sorted it out, bus started to drive off but ambulance came up and so he had to park up again, just in front of me. I stayed put and bus began to drive off when ambulance went past so I'm not sure if he noticed I'd knocked my car on him.

Got to my destination and noticed a couple scratches on side of my car as well as a bolt from the bus.... Read more

A "bolt" from the bus?! Could you elaborate, where did you find it? And whereabouts did you impact the bus?

Do you recall whose bus it was, which firm? Many/most newer vehicles tend to have all-round external cameras, it sounds as though the driver was unaware but it's possible the video may be reviewed if the damage was significant enough - hence my question about the slightly alarming "bolt"! Most of the larger, national bus operators are self-insured, if you've informed your insurer I imagine they'd do nothing unless they hear from the bus company - except hike next year's premium, of course.

Hi all,

After some advice please. Apart from appalling customer service I have an issue with charges ford are trying to apply. In Feb this year I purchased an automatic 3yr old kuga with FSH and 17,500 miles on clock. Also purchased 3yr extended warranty. Six weeks ago whilst driving there was a huge bang under the car followed by rattling noise. Garage have said bolt has become loose which has caused irreparable damage to gearbox and gearbox casing. Underwriters will not pay out on warranty as they have said cause is not mechanical failure. Ford manufactuer have offered to contribe £708 to cost of repair which is £5000 plus. Car now has 23,500 miles on clock. I think this is outrageous and haven't got that kind of money spare. Where do I stand legally? Is car not fit for purpose? Any help really appreciate

That's excellent news. It's often a good idea to bypass garages who are under pressure to reject warranty claims and go direct to the manufacturers customer services team. The firm I worked for received refunds from the warranty firm if their "burn rate" (claims) were under a certain level so the incentive was there to reject legitimate claims. If a customer accepted it then so be it but if they fought then they'd rethink.

This wasn't the case with Mitsubishi warranty claims which were very liberal in their outlook. Not that we encounterd many issues with them especially back in their 90's hay days but general used stock was a different matter.
