Hi, I recently had a new clutch fitted and since then I had the engine management light on showing oil and battery. It goes off after a while and I have drove the car a few times . It's now cutting out on me whilst driving. Any ideas ? Read more
On Tuesday I’m picking up a 2004 Renault Clio Dynamique 1.6. Its done 65k, apparently runs perfect are has no major faults. Price is £395 due to the fact that it has no M.O.T. Mot history for the last few years is perfect. I’m buying from a garage who have said they know no reason why it would fail an mot and they have great review and testimonials on their website. This has given me a fair amount of confidence in buying the car and risking getting it motd straight after.
All I would like to know is what I should be looking out for when I go to view and test drive the car. I virtually no nothing apart from the basics so a rough guide of how to spot any major potential problem with the car that would mean I shouldn’t buy it would be great. I am happy to pay a little bit should it fail the mot as I think it’s undervalued but probably no more than £200-£300.
Thanks a lot! Read more
Buying a 13 year old car is a risk. The following day it may simply be junk - worth scrap value only. Having bougbt old cars (Clio) for daughher there I would walk away from anything which:
- did not have at least 6 months MOT...
A warning to anyone insuring with xxxx - they have treated me unprofessionally and incompetently. I insured my three classic American wedding cars with them a couple of months ago. After completing my quite they accused me of failing to declare a minor collision. Checking the recorded phone conversation revealed my full disclosure of the incident. Their employeee had failed to record it. Then the other day they demanded a copy of the V5 of one of my Ford Mustangs (a car they had previously insured) saying there were discrepancies with details I'd given them when taking out the new policy. Naturally I asked what the discrepancies were and suggested they again listen to the taped phone call to check what information I gave. They flatly refused both requests! In effect they have twice accused me of lying. I've had to refer the case to their CEO but I've already decided to find a different and professional insurer. Read more
In line with our guidance, naming the insurance co. would have been fine without the insulting language.
We will have to agree to disagree on what is or isn't insulting language, but if someone called you appalling, unprofessional and incompetent, you would be entitled to feel insuted....
Recently, my daughters car (Peugeot 307 auto) had a flat battery, turned out she'd left the interia light on. For last Christmas my son had bought me an RAC Jump Starter Heavy Duty 400 amp. However, it would not start the car & we ended up taking the battery off & charging it overnight.
Having a closer look at the specifications of the jump starter, it states for vehicles up to 1500cc & as the Pug is a 1.6; it was asking a lot.... Read more
I've seen hundreds and possibly thousands of cars jump started in my previous work, the 'yardies' who move the cars in vast compounds at docks and storage facilities often have a minubus with permanently wired heavy jump leads ready at all times clamped to a rubber insulated rail bolted to the front of the vehicles.
They don't have time for all these niceties, they very often don't even use the clamps at all but one of the lads will raise the bonnet and hold the leads against the two flat battery terminals whilst another starts the car, and leaves the flashers on if they're going to leave it running assuming its got some fuel, if for example its due for transporting, both to give the charging system a reason to work and so others know what the score is there, plus if left it could still be days later if it had enough fuel, and this has happened hence the flasher practice...the minibus engine almost never got stopped during the working day....
Hi Everyone,
I purchased a car from a dealer in late August. After driving the car for a few weeks I noticed the clutch was spongy. When I took the car to F1 autocentre they thought the clutch required replacing and as confirmation I took the car to an independent Peugeout dealer who confirmed the clutch required replacing.... You have an opinion from a Dealer that the clutch is faulty, needs replacement, whether a DMF would be needed cannot be determined with any accuracy untill stripped down, or the car tested.
The supplier dealer has offered to replace the clutch, but you have rejected this. Which means you would have to go through small claims to recect the car and recover your monies, Whilst this is going on - up to 6months - you will not be able to use the car, or if you do and win then an allowance will be made for your use of the vehicle....
I'm afraid I agree with Pepipoo.

HJ Telegraph answers are too brief to allow any detailed examination of the nuances about fighting private parking tickets.
I know HJ often says that's the law so complain to your MP, however it would be beneficial for him to avoid any questions about private parking matters and maybe point questioners to people who do have the time to explain it.
Answer each one with.
The whole industry is a mess. Fighting these things is possible. it takes time, but there are online resources to guide you through the various stages of an appeal.

My experience was at low speed (- maybe I exaggerated the jerk effect). Seems to me that dubious assumptions are made about people's varying ability to adapt through practice - ever tried writing with your "wrong" hand?
Hi my clio 2004 1.2 8v starts turning over then stops dead after 3-5 turns.
I bought this car as a non runner with a snapped cambelt. I have since replaced the valves, rebuilt the engine and replaced the cambelt and tensioner. ... Read more

At one time Volvo cars had excellent all round visibility, not now.

A problem which you did not get with the maestro, which was like sitting in a fish bowl, however the maestro has long since bitten the dust while the golf goes on as usual getting smugger and smugger. Motoring press meanwhile, have totally given up on offering any sort of criticism about the golf, instead ramming down our throats that it is point blank the best car in it's class.
BL had a lot of drawbacks that have been discussed on here countless times, but their cabin design was really good - spacious, comfortable and great visibility....
Ahh the joys of travelling, as I progressed along the M62 on Monday evening I was aware of a steady 'tick' 'tick' 'tick' that wasn't from the radio and then it progressed to 'thud thud thud' and I knew I had a flat tyre...
So the car is 18 years old, but I'd replaced the spare tyre earlier in the year as it still had the original (date code was xx98) so I knew I had a decent spare. I could shift the wheelnuts on the offending wheel and so was onto a winner....assuming the jack didn't go up into the sills which it didn't.... Read more
Thanks for all the replies.
Where I had pulled over on the M62 was in fact in some roadworks, inside the coned-off section and there was a 50mph speed limit in effect. ...
A few months my car had the "emissions update". When the VW garage completed this update the EGR failed and as a "goodwill gesture" they replaced the EGR. Fuel composition has been significantly reduced, with frequent regen.
I began smelling a strong acrid smell in the car, enough to burn my eyes and back of throat. I returned it to the VW garage and they agree about the fumes, and they also found the coolant to be black with what appears to be soot. They do not know the cause, although they seem to know it is unrelated to their previous work. They have sent the coolant fluid away for analysis.... Read more
