Hello, looking for advice. My wife has owned from new a CX-5, 150 sport manual, registered Dec 2012. She has used this to travel to work, 30 miles each way, mostly motorway miles at high speed. Given her type of usage she has had no Dpf problems and no issues except having the EGR replaced under warranty at about two years old.
Last week, at just over 80,000 miles she had the engine warning light come on when on the way home. Her local Mazda dealership told her it was safe to drive and booked her in for a diagnostic a week later. I advised her not to drive it and she did not. ... Read more
Hi
I have tried to find the answer to my question on-line with little success. The other day somone parked right across the front on my garage (a small dropped kerb) when my wife was on her way to a hospital appointment, luckily after she sounded the horn for a number of minutes the driver turned up and had the gall to say can my wife wait as she will only be a few more minutes. My wife told the driver she was on her way to the hospital and needed the car moving now and why didn't they park in the numerous free spaces around the immediate area.... Read more
I had this recently with the white lines painted around the end of our road, which is a T shaped close. I am on the top of the T on the left as you look at it.
That section of road has a huge U shaped white lines and dropped kerbs for me to access my drive, and 3 neighbours to access their garages. Yesterday another neighbour double parked his LWB van at the side of his own car which was also parked partly in front of my garden. The double parked vehicle, left there from the early hours of the morning till about 9.30 completely obstructed my access and that of 2 of the other neighbours....
I am looking to buy a BMW 318d privatly, this is from 2007 but a quick google of that car suggests BMW had a LOT of problems with breaking timing chains which were costly to repair.
I know very little about cars and I don't understand how much of a risk this would be, but I also am in need of something and that's local and the price fits the bill.
The car has done 90k miles - is it very risky to buy? I understand there is no way for me to inspect the chain...... Read more
Thanks so much, I certainly do not want to be without ISO fix!
Here we ago again, my annual 'battle' with AA membership renewal. About a month before expiry they send me a renewal reminder and whack up the price from last year. I then phone and painfully haggle it down as best I can.
This years demand:... Read more
"Member". Do you think that word is part of the problem here. Once upon a time, the RAC and AA were motoring clubs of which you were a member, but now they are just insurance policies. "Member" evokes loyalty which clearly neither organisation has any of to its customers otherwise they wouldn't try and screw you each year.
How interesting ! My 'membership' card informs me that I have been a (loyal) member for 44 years and emotionally I am in some way 'attached' to this organisation that I joined as a mere lad. The fact that it is now run by a bunch of what might be called vulture capitalists seems to have escaped my rational self !...
Just been charged £528 by Mini main dealer (Sytner) to replace front and rear pads at 20K miles. Pads only, NOT pads and discs.
Mini service website quotes the same job on previous models (2009-2013) at £220 (£115 front, £105 rear) ...under the "value service" section.... Read more
Our local Ford dealer had different prices for the same work if you got a quote from his workshop or from the "RapidFit" on the same site.Usually the workshop was/is cheaper.
My mk6 golf 1.6 tdi rise the temparature hand over 90 just as I pulled into my drive tonight. I let it cool down and checked the coolant, it was still at the correct level and no visbile leaks/contamiination.
There was plenty of heat coming through the vents when I turned the car off. I went out a small drive, but when I come to a steep hill where I live it started to rise up over 90. Again no cold air coming through when heatears are on full. ... Read more
Hi did the fix this problem ?
Hi
I have read a lot of negative things about the ecoboost engine. Which of the modern petrol engines are proving most reliable and long lasting?... Read more
I agree - the VAG 1.4 TSI is a superb engine - as I've mentioned before we have this in SWMBO's Audi A1, and it's not only more fun to drive than my diesel Volvo but actually more economical. The 2.0 TSI that I had in the last two Octavias is an equally brilliant engine. I'm sure these engines are as economical as they are because it takes little pressure on the accelerator to make spirited progress.
But also let's hear it for the BMW straight-six. I had this in an old Z3 and am being sorely tempted again to get another oldish 'fun car' with this engine. Plenty of zing when you need it but smooth and torquey (like the TSI) when you need to pootle, as one does for most of the time on UK roads.
Just over a week ago I came back to my car (Fiesta mk7 09 1.4 tdci ~50k miles) to find the remote fob not working to unlock the car. Assumed the fob battery had died, so unlocked manually via the key. Got in the car, realised there was absolutely no electrical power, completely dead, no dashboard/interior lights, turning key in ignition did nothing.
Assumed the battery had randomly died. Checked under bonnet for connections etc., all seemed fine. Was about to call break down, then suddenly all power came back and I was able to start the car. Assumed it was some electrical glitch, didn't think much of it.... Read more

Hi
appreciate any advice.. I seem to have an intermittent clutch problem. Several times when driving and changing gear it feels like the clutch pedal does not come all the way up. If I kick it or lift it with my foot it returns to the normal position but when pushing it down again it feels like there is no pressure behind it until it is half way down or worst case pretty much on the floor. I've checked and can not find any leaks. I topped up the fluid and it has not noticeably dropped. Also on a couple of occasions getting into the car I've found the clutch pedal on the floor, it has sank down by itself.... Read more
They often try to fob you off with clutch related issues by stating that it's a wear and tear item. This is true enough for the clutch itself but not the master or slave cylinders which should be covered by any decent warranty especially a manufacturer backed guarantee. I'd expect you to be covered but they may suggest fitting a new clutch while they're in there but it should be fine as long as you're not hard on it.
My first idea was to sell the car but after week on Auto Trader I decided to fix the problem.
For part exchange they offered me up to 5500£ (there is no obvious symptoms that head gasket gone). To buy younger SUV with the low mileage I need to spend at least extra 6k, which I don't have. Plus you never know if the "new" car is in better condition and you will not come back to the garage within few months with another expensive issue....
