Hi, bought an old motorhome last aug and the dealer did quite a bit of work on it prior to collection. He paid for a service and cam belt change at his usual local garage. cam belt tensioner failed in May and caused major top end damage. cam belt was inspected by independent and is definitely not new therefore I can assume tensioner bolt is also old -hence failure. Have contacted motorhome supplier who is slow in responding - As I did not pay for cam belt change (which was not carried out) what legal options do I have assuming I get nowhere with supplier? many thanks for any guidance. Last night the doorbell rang at 8.15. I don't usually have visits that time of night.
When I went it was someone collecting for the Red Cross. I think most charities do a good job and always try to support them.... Read more
Are you sure that they were really from Red Cross?
Hi all,
A bit of a longer post to explain a difficult problem I am experiencing with my Seat Altea.
Last month I bought a used Altea 1.6TDI DSG Auto, 2011, 61k miles from Cargiant with full Seat service history. The car came with pre-sale check from Cargiant and a new MOT.
After around 2 weeks of driving (around 600miles - mainly on the motorway), the car suddenly broke down on the motorway. The glow plug warning light came flashing on and the car lost all power and came to a standstill. I restarted the motor and the warning light disappeared and the car drove again for another 3 miles before the same warning light came flashing and I lost all power again. Restarting the motor allowed me to move again and I was luckily close to home and didn't experience any further issues.
I contacted the dealer who told me to take it to Halfords for a diagnostics test which I did. The mechanic did a cold read which indicated that there was a fault with the EGR valve. However, since he didn't have any capacity to check if there was any problem with the EGR valve (as it was a big job) he told me to try another Halford branch for an earlier appointment. In the meantime, he reset the ECU.
When I took it to the other Halfords, I was told that their diagnostics did not pick up any error (even after they drove it around for 10 miles) and that it might just have been a sensor error. They then told me that I should drive it around and take it back to them if the error occurred again. I did another 60 miles or so (again mostly on the motorway) and everything seemed to work fine. The next day, I took the car to the shops and when I started it again it went into limp mode, doing maximum 20 mph and jerking heavily back and forth when I hit the accelerator. I also noticed that the Emissions Control System Light (check engine light?) came on. Restarting didn't help either and the problem stayed.
I brought it back to Halfords who this time told me that the diagnostics indicated a Gear Box fault (gearbox not engaging gears 1 and 3). They then told me that they don't deal with gear boxes and I would have to take it to a Gearbox specialist. They then reset the ECU and gave me the diagnostic report. The dealer authorised me to take it to an auto gearbox specialist for a 1h diagnostics. However, the specialist couldn't find any error codes, even after driving it around for a while. Again I was told to drive the car around and bring it back when the error occurred again (being the third time now!).
The specialist told me that the diagnostic checks would unlikely have shown that gears 1 and 3 weren't engaging if it was an electronic problem. He told me that the problem was likely to occur again and he was surprised that the car was still driving at all. Anyway, that was last week and I have done around 80 miles (mostly motorway) since then and haven't had any issues to date. However, I cant use the car much as I am avoiding longer trips with it, in case it breaks down.
Any ideas what it could be (I am suprised about the gear 1 and 3 fault, since the first breakdown occurred while I was in gear 7)? And do you recommend returning the car at this point or what other steps can I take to ensure that the problem is identified soon?
Thanks in advance.
When a VW is serviced correctly by an independent garage how is the overall service record err recorded? I can imagine a scenario of dealer service untill warranty is up, then an independent for routine work, then main dealer for a cam belt change and so forth.
Well actually I have done that myself for two VW group cars.
My brother-in-law has been to view a 2004 Skoda at a small used car dealer. The dealer is only offering a one month warranty, his own warranty. Is this legally correct? I was under the impression used cars had to have a minimum of three months. The car has done about 85,000 miles, not sure whether that has any bearing on this.
Advice much appreciated.... Read more
Sounds like a good wee car. Simple, straightforward and rarely owned by boy racers. These make excellent wee cheap smokers. Well bought.
I recently purchased a 2014 vauxhall insignia(less than 6 months) from a vauxhall dealer and i have been recently had the radiator fail. Now this car is only just over three years so i have spoke to the warranty people who have looked at it and stated that it is corrosion that has caused it.
Now bearing in mind radiators dont normally go overnight, would i be correct in thinking that it is likely that it was faulty when i bought it as less than 6 months to me seems not exactly a long time for this to occur. Should radiators really be failing with just over 3 years useage in normal uk conditions?... Read more
Call in on the selling garage - Consumer Rights are 6 months.
Ask them to replace the radiator....
I bought a 15 plate mazda back in Oct from a Stoneacre dealership. About 4 weeks ago some lights came on on the dash - Tyre pressure malfunction, Engine malfunction, DSC malfunction, DPF malfunction, Smart Brake assist malfunction. In addition the istop stopped working, and the dash section that shows you current gear and suggested gear also stopped working.
I booked the car into Mazda (as advised by Stoneacre since it was under warranty), but when i took the car to Mazda I was told that I may not be covered for the work, as there was no service history with the car so the warranty could be invalid. I immediately contacted Stoneacre to trace the service history and awaited a call back.... Read more
Update:
I got my car back. Turns out it was previously owned by Enterprise so they managed to get a print out from them to confirm when the vehicle was serviced. Mazda were then happy to do the work....
Based on the comments of rejecting cars for shoddy quality and poor panel alignment I'm not sure the owners on the F-Pace owners forum would agree with this rating! Read more
A friend used to be employed by a Jaguar Land Rover Dealer in the Midlands left his job as a Service Department Team Leader as he was fed up of dealing with irate customers and having car keys thrown at him due to the many problems owners endured across the JLR Brand.

Thanks for the advice I will try to find a local A/C specialist in Cardiff.
I have recently been in a non-fault RTC. I was stationary when a car failed to stop and went into my boot.
I have been dealing with the insurance broker directly, to be honest I think I was in a bit of shock and wasn't thinking straight. Looking at it now I probably should have contacted my insurer in the first instance.
I have been dealing with crusader who I think are part of the insurance brokers, they have put me through to a company called kindertons for the car estimate and jigsaw law (part of the crusader group?) for injury claim. This has been quite confusing to work out who works for who.
Had an accident about 20 years ago, but was my fault, it seemed so simple then, the insurance company sorted everything out and no hasstle.
I am worried now because I didn't do any research, not had to do this before and they get you at a time when you are shaken up and vulnerable. I feel I am dealing with a number of companies, many forms to fill in which uses language I don't understand.

You may well fall into 'betterment'.
As you yourself said in the original post, it is an 'old motorhome'. If you expect to have a perfect, new engine fitted at zero cost to yourself then you would be in a better position than you were initially. So that would not be 'reasonable'....
