Would be better that ALL MOT centres follow the Northern Ireland lead whereby they have Government test centres and there is little, if any, degree of rip-off! Read more
Hi all,
I do about 20,000 miles a year. I work for myself, IT related, and I'm looking for my next car. My '07 BMW 525d 3.0 touring has done 171k and has cost me a lot of money in the last year, with new dual mass flywheel, clutch & crankshaft pulley. It had a replacement DPF at 120k a couple of years ago. I bought it 5 yrs ago with 85k on the clock. I love the car, and it still goes like a train (300 miles yesterday) and returns about 38mpg. It is fast, comfortable, practical and drives like a dream. I'm looking for another used car, but am wary of buying a diesel which is about 5 yrs old and facing big bills, yet my mileage points to a diesel as the logical choice. I would like a big estate car which drives well, though not wedded to BMW, though it has to be said, once you're used to iDrive, and you try another car (Volvo V60, Jeep Renegade) and realise how dreadful their user interfaces are.....Anyway, what might I consider that is reasonably quick, won't do terrible MPG, is at least as big as the Beemer and feels good to drive? Is it diesel, then wait for the inevitable bills, or petrol and take the hit over time at the pumps?... Read more
arcI like the Legacy, though I think I'd struggle to get more than 20-25mpg. They have a reputation for being very thirsty. They made a 3.0 Type B or was it a 3.5 litre - dunno, but it went like a stabbed rat while looking like Farmer Giles' special - a real Q car.
Flashlube is a must with them, but they do run well on LPG if that might be food for thought....
Our almost worthless but excellent Focus will soon need an oil change at 125,000m. So far I have used a cheap semi-synthetic recommended 5-30 every 10-12,000m or so. It only does about 8,000m a year. However, it is now using around one litre every 5,000m which is reasonable. But I think for a loose worn engine 5-40 or even 10-40 might be more suitable (it has no turbo or chain to lubricate). There does seem to be a body of opinion on USA sites that supports this idea. What do the pundits here think? Read more
To put off throwing stuff out, which I hate, I'll have crack at the "thin v. thick" chestnut.
This is an oldie but mouldy, and, like many basic automotive questions, hard information on it is rare, but as a generalisation the above "Thin gooood, Thick baaaad" concensus is simplistic and mostly wrong. ...
It all goes"pear shaped"when you are involved in a non fault accident with an uninsured person/pedestrian and your insurer can't claim against the other party.try renewing after that! Read more
I have just had my car written off due to a no fault accident. They have offered me £9,707 when I bought the vehicle only 6 months ago for £12,950.
How do I claim the difference? I have declined their offer on the basis I am losing out by £3,243. This is SO stressful!
The third party in my non-fault had not admitted liability and so I went through my own insurer. Unfortunately this means I will have to pay my excess. Do I have ant rights if they later admit liability or should I cut my losses as I didn’t have motor legal? It was clearly their fault but I was told they wouldn’t admit liability until all of the costs come through and are paid, at which time the excess is already paid and so I’m on my own reclaiming it.
I feel like despite everything, I’m being left in an awful and stressful position when my car was parked outside my home and it was hit by a bus. I’m so unbelievably stress about it and £400 is no small sum (if I was responsible I would be okay paying it...) Read more
Problem with costs of repairs is that they are too high by so called approved repairers. Quite likely a repair cost of £8500 can be a lot cheaper at a small repairer.
I recently damaged my rear bumper and cost would have been in excess of £200 but I had it done for £90.
If only we could go back to getting two or three quotes ourselves we would save hugely on insurance costs. Read more
Someone ran into the back of my car at a round about in Dec 2020,
My Insurance provider gave me a 3rd party company to handle my claim. They concluded my car was a write off (but drive able) at a value of £5.7k before accident and the buy back value is £1.7k They stated that if I buy back at £1.7k I'd get £4k as well.
Now I've bought the car back and fixed it privately and am being told that there's no money to be paid as I decided to keep the car.
My gut instinct tells me am being played as I feel am being played. can you anyone please advise if this is right and if i have a case to pursue here.
Many thanks
Horrendous news on this and the story is sure to unfold over the coming weeks.
I have never seen a building that was so engulfed in fire and so quickly. In fact, when I first switched the news on my first thought was that it was a terrorist incident.... Read more
It's a national disgrace. The true culprits are our legislators and their lawyers who have been negligent by both drafting imprecise regulations ( the lawyers for any inquiry will doubtless profit hugely from pondering vague phrases like 'limited combustibility'), and failing to amend them after the experience of similar fires elsewhere.
The building regs should have prohibited the use of either named specific materials or anything that will ignite at <1000C for cladding/insulation. So far, it appears that nothing illegal was done.
I have just had my car returned today 7/03/19 from copart in chester after paying a retention fee to buy it back through hastings insurance as a cat n write off and it has come back with a damaged drivers wing that was not damaged when it left me and a damaged boot like it had been shunted around with a forklift truck I bought it back on the reasons to repair it but it has extra damage now what would you recommend put another claim in for the extra damage as it has never been the property of copart chester

The M6 Toll has been sold for an undisclosed sum to IFM Investments, and Australian Pension Fund.

Every time I use the M6 toll, it's near enough empty of all other traffic. It could be single lane in each direction and cope quite happily with the volumes it gets. I usually use this when my satnav tells me the M6/M5 interchange is a nightmare, which it nearly always is.
This road should be free and will allow proper maintenance to the M6/M5 interchange....
