Unlike "proper" Bentleys, like Arnage and Mulsanne, the VW-based models have always been aimed at buyers with plenty of money but no taste - just like the BMW-based Rolls-Royces!...

Hi All

Looking for car change recommendations again, please. I did ask here a while ago about a used Beemer or even Merc, but realised in the end that I probably couldn't afford to run one, especially if it became troublesome. So I'm looking for something modest, around the seven/ seven and a half grand mark, not a diesel. Something with a decent ride, unlike the concrete suspension of this Focus, which is slowly turning the vertebrae of both my wife and I to mush. ... Read more

Hi all,

I purchased a 2004 Corsa last year and all was well up until the last few months when I noticed this horrendous judder when pulling off. It only occurs just as the biting point is being reached. Once the clutch is more or less up everything is fine. I've also noticed that the car can be hesitant to actually move when pulling off, even when revving fairly hard. My immediate thought is that something has contaminated the clutch plates. Can this juddering also be a sign of a worn out clutch though?

Many thanks Read more

It's off to the garage so I'll see what happens. Hopefully it's not needing a new clutch

Hi everyone. Our car was sat at some lights, on pulling away there was a grinding noise and then it wouldn't move. On getting it recovered i tested it, my wife was driving when it boke down. I could start it, no problems, it would rev in neutral to what seemd to be normal levels. When i shifted it into D there was clanking sounds and grinding. No movement with the handbrake off. You can then not return it anyother gear, unless it is turned off. R just has grinding soun as does the 1,2, 3 gears. Could you just confirm that it is indeed the gearbox?

I've tried looking for salvage boxes, but i'm also wondering if any other models in the civic range share the same gearbox? They are tricky to find under 90k miles. ... Read more

Yes, it was pretty servere. When it was off there was an obvious weak spot. Rusted and fatigued. When we felt under the wheel after rolling it off the lorry the rubber boot came off in the hand and the shaft was flopping on its own. It appeared that when we tried to start it up it wouldn't go back into Neutral as the gearbox was still tring to engage. Can't thank you all enough, a good shout.

Just had a few weeks between the two, Nuremberg and the Salzburg and Linz, and we both remarked how pedestrians, cyclists and drivers were really good at obeying the road junction, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, Nice to see! Read more

If its still on iplayer have a Watch of last week's Paul Hollywood on Cars where he was in Germany. There's an understanding that every car is part of the problem when there are queues, but by working together the problem is overcome. The concept of zip merging is engrained in every driver as they know all drivers benefit from the technique. In the UK when lanes merge we go into space protection mode and woe betide anyone who has the nerve to try and get in front of me.

Zip merging is enshrined in law in Austria.

It's not all good once you get off the autobahns in Austria. The Austrians like to make progress. Dangerous overtaking manoeuvres are an everyday occurrence, and something to be aware of when driving here.

How much is a cat D repaired 10 year old car worth ?... Read more

has very little service history with it I'm guessing because when it became a cat D they decided it wasn't worth it to take it but just done it themselves.

Either that, or it hasn't been serviced for years. I'd lean towards the latter.

The last car I sold (privately) had a folder full of every receipt relating to it during my years of ownership.
