Does anyone know MOT requirements for maximum rotational play at the steering wheel?

Track rod ends are fine, no play at steering column at the inside of engine bulkhead, is it likely to be universal joints at the lower end of the rack or inside rack? its a Kangoo 4x4 with 85K on the clock. I have no ramps or ability to get under the car. thanks, Mike.... Read more

I had one of these new in 06 that developed a nasty knock from the front end. Three strip down and rebuilds of the front suspension (both sides) and two steering racks later the dealer handed it back saying they couldn't fix it! Rather than drag them through the courts I part exchanged it for a VW Caddy that gave me great service for years. There's good reason why few of these reach their tenth birthday before being scrapped. They're garbage.

Can anyone guide me as to how I get at the screw that holds this on? I think the first step is to take off the gearshift gaiter but terrified of snapping something... Read more

Are car manufacturers sitting on a stock pile of pre reg cars?

There was a glut of pre registrations for the 17 plate.
Yet they don't appear for sale based on the quantities of vehicles on dealer/manufacturer/auto trader sites.

Are they purposely storing these vehicles until a later date to ensure they don't crash car values?
Or were they pre registered for a tax/VAT reason? If so why are they not for sale?

Drove past our local Citroen dealer yesterday and spotted he had a row of 17 plate C1's all in the same colour, did not get chance to read the price. Suspect they would be registered in March before the VED change and could make a good buy if the price is right.

Some manufacturers require the cars to be held for 6 months but some only 3 months. Some unscrupilous dealers sell immediately and keep the V5C which is of course illegal. Dad bought a Nissan which was just 6 months old when released for sale and we looked a Mazda's a few years ago which were lined up on the forcourt. Unfortunately whilst they had prices on none were available to buy for another 3 months (6 months again). The Citroens mentioned above are a max of 3 months old so is the delqaer be dodgy I wonder....

The original 13 pin plug on my caravan has failed. Corrosion mainly due to being exposed during winter storage. I have a new one from Sealey. Different assembly but have worked out the alignment it is now just the wiring. Not all the colours are the same as the wiring diagram, but I have the old plug and the wires that connect it from where I cut it off. Not all the terminal are numbered on the new plug. Can I assue they are in order clockwise? The middle raised three are 1, 2 and 4. Then 6,7,8,9 then 12 and 13 are numbered. The terminals in between are not numbered. Will these go in order. Between 13 and 6 there are two terminals not numbered. Can I assume these will be 3 and 5? Also between 9 and 12, can I assume these are 10 and 11?. Help!

There's a generally available PDF on the Caravan Club (now Caravan & Motorhome Club) www.caravanclub.co.uk/media/1022790/towbar-wiring-...f

Thank RT. I have looked at that and other websites, now figured out the terminal sequence, although my wires have some differnt colours to the wiring sequence. I am hoping the terminal numbers are the important part and not the wire colour! Watch this space....

I was recently rear ended while driving my 11 plate Ford Focus Zetec (approx 42000 on the clock). The car went into my insurers approved garage and an independent report concluded that the repairs were going to be more than 66% of the value of the car. My insurers batted back to the third party insurers to give them the option of either going ahead with the repair or deeming a write off.

I have just heard back that as 10 days have elapsed without reply, my insurers have instructed for repairs to commence shortly. Now I am guessing for most that would be ok but I have a 3 year gap insurance policy that expires in a few months time. I have paid off early the car loan so would have been in a position to buy a more modern car with little cost to myself.... Read more

Not quite.

The majority of GAP policies are designed to cover outstanding finance only. If your car is written off with a market value of say £3k but you owe £4k on it. The finance company gets the £1k difference....

Choosing diesel new; other than for towing vehicles, Lorries Tractors and Buses is absolutely Irresponsible . Manufacturers have invested heavily in New Euro 6 diesel technology but Nitrous Oxide still kills if it is disgorged in large quantities .
Just as it has been since we started buying 50% of our cars using Diesel .
This was a 'caveat' to all scientific advice in the 90's and early millennium years about
opting for the Diesel Path to lower CO2 .
Why do we let 'Politicians' who only go for Quick Fixes at the best ; dictate and advise
so badly!! The Motor manufacturers and Motoring Media also have a lot to answer to .
If there had been ignorance about the Consequences of so much Diesel Emissions
okay .But some of the Media printed some of the Extensive Research that had pointed out that Diesel was a very carcinogenic fuel to use in volume .
Every Diesel Fuel pump should be fitted with a severe health warning .
Co2 may be harmful in the long term but this quick Fix was known to be harmful
in the near future. A mixed fuel usage would have been better, whilst the monies spent
on research for Diesel could have been much better spent on Hydrogen , Electric ,
Petrol and far more propellants for personal transport . Read more

Change the brake fluid. It'll likely have absorbed a lot of water since 2009, and it might never have been done.

If the drained stuff looks very rusty I'd personally strip the calipers. In fact I'd probably do it anyway, though I'd be reluctant to pay someone else to do it.

Would the car be less reliable than other cars?... Read more

We're happy to help but one thing I'd say at your budget you shouldn't fix your search on one particular model. There's loads of decent cars worthy of viewing. Nissan Micra, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10/i20, Ford Fiesta 1.25, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, even the Fiat Panda can be a good budget buy. Don't walk past a good example of any of these to buy a tatty 107/C1/Aygo.

It looks as if VAG are now offering a warranty on cars affected by the NOx emissions scandal. They call it “goodwill” rather than warranty, it lasts for 24 months from the date the fix was applied and covers fuel injectors and high pressure pump, EGR valve and all exhaust after treatment hardware. Still no admission of guilt and they should have done this a year ago.

"The problem is that the theoretical driving route/pattern bears no relationship to any form of average of real drivers in real traffic conditions."

Yes, that's exactly what I meant - the results are meaningless for that reason.

Are there any laws governing the wording on signs for parking on private land? One place I'm thinking is a retail park, it is a 24 hour zone. It's monitored with ANPR cameras and the sign just says "Purchase a ticket. Maximum stay 3 hours" No mention that it applies for 24 hours. So I drove in to the empty car park after the stores had closed and went off for the evening. Ten days later I got a "parking invoice". I've been parking there for years but only recently have they installed cameras. Read more

I agree with daveyjp and others, don't be in a hurry to pay. Lodge an appeal, they have to send you details of how to do this. Go back and take photographs of the signage or lack of coherent signage. I am under the impression that material facts regarding the contract have to be displayed. Seems a bit mean to install cameras without making clear the zone is camera monitored. Also not to allow cars to park out of certain shop hours. Examine the detail, that is where the devil is!! Worth checking to see if private parking signage comes under the RTA as it does for local authorities. It is amazing how many get it very wrong.
