Another question about used Toyotas - sorry!

Out of the blue I've been offered a 2001 Yaris for £600.00 on a private sale.

It has about 29,000 only on the clock as it was owned by a lady who literally took it to sainsburys and back and looked after it well. She has sadly passed away and the family want to sell it. I've checked online and all MOTs are there, the last one said "nearside front tie bar/rod rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement". Same for offside.

I've not driven for a few years but need a runaround to take my elderly mum to appointments etc etc but will be doing some distances now and again for me.

What do you think? I thought the low usage thing was great until I read here it might be the opposite.

I haven't got anyone to come with me to look at it and unfortunately I'm no expert!

Thanks very much for any advice/thoughts you may have. Read more

I helped a relative to buy her first car, an auto Yaris MK 1 and was lucky to find an early model built in Japan.

Am I right in thinking that these early models prior to being built in France were galvanised?

Remember seeing in Which that the Yaris MK 1 Verso, which was also built in Japan was given the highest ever customer satisfaction rating of any car in Motoring Which

Hi,

My son was caught at 7.30 am doing 90 miles and hour in a 50 zone. He knows it was wrong, and in fact got rid of the car. It took a while for anything to come through, so was not sure what was happening ( happened in Oct he heard March). He has a clean licence, so this was the first time. He got a 112 day ban and 780 fine. he told them he was self employed, that he was a father to three children, and that he now had one of those children living with him, who has a contract with one of the premier football club, so has to take him 4 times a week training. If he loses his licence it will be difficult to get to work, as well as once he is home (earliest 4.30) to then get his son to training using trains (and it would be country buses) to get to his training. Do you think it is harsh? ... Read more

Last Saturday on the M74 a white BMW M4 hammered past us when we were travelling with the cruise set at 72 mph, he must have been doing close to or possibly over 100mph judging by the way he disappeared into the distance.

But not for long. At the next junction a jam sandwich joint the M74 with all lights blazing and a few miles down to road he had pulled up the M4....

I was looking for a small automatic car and found the Toyota IQ in Toyota garage. It's 7 years old but have only 12k miles on it. Clear MOT history. What could be the problems with this car as it had low mileage? Could it already start to rot? How good usually dealer would check used car before buying it? Do u think the £5400 is good price for it?
Thanks a lot. Read more

A good friend runs 2 of these and thinks they are an amazing bit of kit (he is an engineer). What I don't get is why the Smart cars are so popular while the IQ is in a totally different league.Streets ahead in all areas.

I know that I am not alone when noticing the space available for current autos has not changed in decades.

With the current growth in sales of MPVs SUVs crossovers bigger and better seems to be the theme today, if you add in the yearly facelift new model that is always a few cms wider and longer there is coming the point and in fact in certain circumstances it has been reache d where the car of today does not fit the roads or parking spaces.... I will look for a quiet corner of a car park if possible and walk the extra distance. Saves see- sawing into a tight spot between other cars. What does irk me though is when I do this and someone parks right next door to me when there may be dozens of spaces around. Do people think cars get lonely and want to talk to each other?

Hi, My daughter owns a 2003 Daewoo matiz 0.8 SE + and the the door lock is currently broke. I am looking to replace just the door or possibly all the barrels so she stilll only needs one key, but looking in to buying I am seeing different options with or without immobiliser. The trouble is I have no idea if this car has one fitted or not or if it is disabled. I have searched online to try and find spec for the SE+ but cannot find a definitive answer.

Electric cars are the future, NOT they may not use fossil fuel on the road (electricity generated by power stations). but congestion will greatly increase, you will have the choice of using you virtually free car or expensive public transport.

Demand for Electric cars will soon dwindle out when multicar households find out how much it will cost to upgrade their Electrical service head next to the meter. An Electrician friend of mine has just had a quote of £3500 from the regional DNO for them to come out and upgrade a customers' Electrical service head in a Multi Electric Car household because the existing incoming 60 Amp service fuse can't cope with 2 - 3 cars on charge, plus the normal household load, and that is before considering the £1300 cost of installing the outdoor connection points. They have also been told that the DNO have to check that there is the local substation capacity to upgrade their head before work can commence, so there is a small chance that if the upgrade is refused, this family may have bought 3 electric cars, and may end up only having the capability of charging one at a time.

Hi, while accelerating, engine noise, lose of acceleration. Result no sign of a piston in cylinder 2, whats left of the con rod is dangling vertically from the crank, spark plug smashed. 47000 miles on clock, pretty sure its legit. owned for 2 months, selling ford dealership have been very good so far, can not fault them. No engine faults warnings or codes diplayed prior to failure, coolant display temp normal. Sudden fluid ingress into cylinder would explain this sudden failure without prior signs/ warnings. Possible reduction in mpg over last 2 weeks. Now the questions. Can a head gasket fail suddenly to the extent it causes hydrolok? Could an injector fail to allow liquid fuel to enter cylinder to do the same without a fault code? Material fault in piston or con rod are also possibilities. I have found very little info on 2.0 engine failure of standard tune engine, does anyone have a similar story? For economic reasons the engine in question is not going to be stripped for analysis, which leaves me with the mental anguish of not understanding the full reason for failure. Any on topic answers and info would be very welcome. Read more
