Hi all I was just wondering what all the types of astra are i.e. SRi SE e.t.c. and which are the best. Read more

If your budget can stretch to it get an Astra K. Way better than all previous Astras and is a worthy challenger to the likes of the Golf, Focus and Mazda 3. I was recently going to replace my Focus with another but I found the Astra to be better equipped, more refined and has a nicer interior than the Focus whose crown has slipped lately. Only letdown with the K is the steering is a little too light and lacks feel but the overall package is a very good one.

As for trim levels, if you want all the driver aids get the SRi, if you like creature comforts go Elite....

Hi,

I'm buying a 1996 4.0 XJ6 and I was thinking it might benefit from a cleanup/ de-coke. Anyone used the Terraclean product and did it work? Were they any things to watch out for doing this on an older car?... Read more

Hasn't the company behind Terraclean just closed down? It was called Renowned Performance or something similar.

Hello you helpful folks. Help needed. Went out to the car today and both windows were down slightly and the spoiler was raised. Got in, fired up and put the windows up and the spoiler down. Got home, turned the ignition off and the spoiler went up while the roof motor sounds as if it trying to operate now and then. Went round the back and the brake lights were on! Turned the ignition on and lowered the spoiler and the brake lights stayed on. Turned the ignition off and the spoiler went up with the brake lghts still on and the roof motor trying to operate. Decided to go for a short drive and reversed off the drive. The dash then read "check reversing lights" Went for a short drive. Got back and went through the same ignition off/spoiler up and brake lights on. Disconnected the battery and reconnected it the same problems. Tried the roof motor and it wouldn't operate. Any ideas you learned ones? Best Regards. Read more

Sorry for the late reply. On investigation it was found that the passenger footwell had some water in it (don't know why yet). This has probably jiggered the Control Unit under the passenger seat which could explain all that was happening. Removed as much water as possible and put the car away to dry. It is booked in at the local independant but he can't look at it for a week or two. He is very busy because he is so good. Will have another look on Sunday when it should be bone dry. Let's see what happens.

I always thought that "red and amber" lights came straight after "red" and meant "prepare to go" not "stop". Please correct me if I'm wrong. Read more

Hello,

I bought a car in March from a private seller on AutoTrader for £6,550. Before purchasing the car, I paid for the Autotrader HPI vehicle check - the report came back clear, with no outstanding finance/write offs or anything untoward on the car.... Read more

You will be entitled to, as per (1), the reduction in the market value. The clause at the bottom limits the maximum claim to the lower of 50% of the open market value of the car, with a maximum claim limit of £15,000.

So basically, in your case, the claim will be what the difference in value for a 'clean' car and a Cat D car would be....

Wondered if anyone could help with my little 2008 C3 problem. I left my car at the airport for a week and when i got back into my car, my locking system started playing up. At first it was hit and miss if the car locked and unlocked and then it just wouldn't lock at all. I changed the battery on the key fob and re-sinked the key fob by putting the key in the ignition, turning the key once and holding the lock button for ten seconds, but it still wouldn't work properly. I bought another battery and changed it again and what i've noticed is, my car locks and unlocks when i'm sat inside the car, but does nothing when i'm outside the car. I just don't seem to have any range to my remote locking. Any idea how to get my range back, so that i can lock the car from the outside ? BTW I'm now having to open the window, lock the car from the inside and then close the window and get the top half of my body out of the car before the window closes. The car will lock the drivers side door manually, but doesn't lock the rest of the car manually. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Agree with Rob. Charge or replace battery if over 5 years old, and do a BSI reset.

Does the advice of don't by a diesel for school runs & shopping extend to older cars ('08-'09)? I seem to read a lot on the subject that, when you drill down, appear to be talking about newer cars fitted with a DPF (I had to look that up) so I haven't been able to make a positively direct correlation.

It probably does, but for a thickky like me it would be good to have it spelled out.... Read more

By a Honda and you'll never get to know your mechanic's name............. because you'll never need to know!

One of my last CRVs is now 19 years old, 280,000 miles on the clock. Failed it's last MOT on a sticky caliper - replaced for under £100 apparently....

Hi, I am in the position insurer wanting to write off my car as a cat D due to a non-fault accident. Using the approved repairer I would need to put about £650 on top of the insurers salvage offer to keep and repair the car. I am unsure of the following and would appreciate any advice:

1. Can I challenge that the car is classed a write off as the repair price is £4700 and only £650 more would repair car. I understand that they designate write off status if more than 60% of value but wondered if there was any negotiation leverage on this? It seems part of the problem is having the write off status and the affect on value etc afterwards.

2. Is it correct write of status affects future value by about 30%?

3. Could I have difficulty reinsuring? I heard that I might only be able to get third party insurance?

4. If I go for write off, what happens to the remainder of the year's insurance premium that I have paid, am I entitled to a refund?

5. Would I require a fresh MOT if and after I went for a repair?

Sorry for all the questions but I am just trying to make the best choice and not be ripped off and I have no experience of this. The car is nine years old. I would appreciate opinions on what you think is best especially if you have been through this yourself and know the pitfalls.. Many thanks. Read more

Thanks so much guys for your advice.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to challenge the cat D status? Could I argue repair could be done for less and therefore just fall inside what they would consider an economic repair (I think they look st 60% value) ? Would I still be stuck with cat D status or would they potentially reconsider?

I know if it is cat D I would have to declare if I wanted to sell etc, but I just wondered if it is possible to challenge this as it could make a big difference to my decision whether to accept write off or salvage.
