I received a PCN for parking beyond bay markings. Is this Legal ? It was in a Council Car park and the front of my car overhung the bay slightly.... Read more

I had a similar problem in Newcastle. Some of the cars in other bays were badly positioned and this made the end bay virtuall unuseable within the lined area. However being on the end and next to a wall it caused no obstruction at all, so I parked there. To be on the safe side I photographed the offending vehicles and my own, just in case. This was the days before mobiles had cameras but I always carried a camera for use on site. Sure enough, when I returned there was a ticket. I appealed and they recinded the ticket. Not much else they could do really given the evidence. Where I live now the council are not so obliging, and I had to take them to a tribunal, which I won. The moral is of course, if you are slightly unsure but have parked safely, then take photos of the cars around you and your car and the signage. It may pay off later. Councils should take a more reasonable view when looking at percieved infringements of often quite petty rules. Rules are for the blind obedience of fools and for the guidance of the wise. Good luck with the appeal.

Very interesting comment from Rob about 'de minimis'. Fascinating what comes into play even with a subject as mundane as parking....

My son was buying a 5 year old Iveco daily and decided to check the mileage/MOT history. The mileage was high and very erratic and the mOT history had a number of advisories on a regular basis. Speaking to the dealer he clims that the problem with the mileage is that the truck can be on kilometers or miles and MOT checks do not always ensure that it is recorded in miles at the test. After a lot of thinking we have decided not to proceed. Too many inconsistences and poor history.

It just confirms that the MOT/Mileage history is a very useful tool if buying a used vehicle. Read more

Agree,...The online MOT check is the very first thing I would do if buying a used (3 years+) vehicle.

I have directed so many peeps to this facility and many are not aware that such a check even exists.!...it gives a potential purchaser some degree of "power"....or the sure knowledge that he or she should simply walk away....

You can simply lay some old carpet or vinyl floor covering neatly over the floorboards. Insulation, especially fibreglass will allow airflow through. Another cheap option is EPS. This is the white polystyrene that you can buy anywhere in sheet form. Closed cell is the best, Cellotex or Kingspan, as it is moisture resistant and being in a bathroom it will get very humid. Bear in mind that insulation is not effective when wet, so if it gets wet or damp it is not performing. Personally I would just use floor covering to stop the draughts. Cheers Concrete

Received my insurance renewal notice today: as usual, checked comparison sites, lo and behold, my insurer was in fact the cheapest, so will renew at the quoted price, same as last year, just under £400 with protected NCD, guaranteed courtesy car etc.

However, I see from the table of no claim discounts that the maximum claim free period listed of 9 years entitles me to 80 % discount. ... Read more

£382 for both my Primera & wife's Clio, both fully comp and with business usage, both parked in driveway - so that's about £190 per car. With Admiral for 2nd year, they were significantly cheaper on the renewal than they were the previous year, when I was a new client.

Being a member of the AA, I've received a letter offering me one of those Car Genie gizmos that you plug into your software port and which is supposed to prewarn you of issues with your car. 29 quid a year and its mine, to have and to hold.

I won't be buying one, because I've lived without such a thing for long enough to realise that I don't really need it, because I expect my car to be able to warn me when its going wrong without buying any additional gadgets, and because I already pay enough money to the AA for a service I've only used about 5 times in 30 years.... Cheers for that. I'll carry on doing as I'm doing then, looking after the car as best I can, and waiting for the built in warnings to pop up....

I totally agree with HJ about 'left foot' braking in automatics. After a while LFB becomes second nature in all except an emergency braking.

And while I agree with HJ about that woman and her witness who somehow convinced a jury (probably not one of them had driven an auto) when knocking down and killing an innocent person, is HJ trying to get himself sued continually naming her in every answer to LFB? Read more

GSTheo

HJ always bangs on about left foot braking in autos but its not right for everyone and is advice that should be carefully given. It's fine for folks who will never drive a manual again but could cause potentially catastrophic confusion when a panicking driver finds themselves stamping on the clutch pedal instead of the brake - leading to vital split seconds of braking time being lost. That's apart from the superior modulation most right footed people will have in their better foot.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice when a really brilliant comment is made.

Bought my Audi from a garage in November and had a problem straight away in December. The garage agreed to fix this as it was in the 6 month warranty period. The car was fitted with a reconditioned rear diff and haldex unit supplied by Audi. Now 7 months later I have had an issue with the car again. My local garage told me the rear diff or haldex had broke so I've sent them botb to the place where the rear diff is under warranty with and they said everything is okay, looking at the rear diff which is jointed onto the haldex unit it's the haldex unit which has gone. So I have had it all put back on my car and transported to my local Audi dealer where they have told me they will not replace under warranty due to outside influences and can't prove mechanical failure. The garage where I purchased the car said take it up with Audi and Saudi say take the car back to where it came. Please can someone advice.

It may sound cruel, but your car is 9 years old, had a repair done at a non Audi franchise under a warranty that was for 6 months. If the original repair had been a new haldex unit at an Audi dealer you would have had a 12 month parts and labour warranty, but at a guess your car was possibly given a haldex unit from a "donor" car, ( a haldex repair is a specialized job!) and did anyone bother to tell you that the tyre tread depths must all be in very close tolerance. Otherwise troubles will happen quickly!

I see why the Audi dealer won't help but look here and call these people....

The stock exhaust currently is quiet and 'boring'. Would like to hear the crossflow Kent engine while driving, hopefully lower pitches, not harsh.

The rest of the exhaust is stock and no engine mods have been done.... Read more

The Kent engine was always five bearing-the three bearing engine was the HCS!The original Anglia//Classic/Cortina engines were three bearing in 997/1198/1340 capacities. The 1498 was five bearing. All the following versions were five bearing until introduction of the HCS.

One of the few parts of our beautiful country that I am not familiar with. For our last caravan trip of the season we are visiting Dorset. Staying near Christchurch for 12 nights. The Jurassic coast is the obvious draw but there must be other places worthy of a visit. If anyone knows the area and has any advice or comments I would gladly receive them. SWMBO is very fond of gardens, although late in the season. Good pubs and coffee stops too are welcome.

Sorry - didn't have time to reply to this thread earlier but there are lots of good suggestions.

Purbeck is lovely and the right side of Dorset for you. The pub at Worth Matravers is the Square and Compass, pretty much unchanged for decades and well worth a visit.
