In the Telegraph on Saturday HJ wrote that towing with a vehicle with an automatic gearbox is not recommended. He cited gearbox overheating issues and wear on the torque converter. My new Volvo XC60 D4 has a torque converter autobox. I specified it from new with a towbar. Does this mean the factory will do what HJ suggests for extra cooling given the specification of the vehicle? My caravan is not particularly big and weighs in at about 1350kg laden. Given my driving style I am not anticipating putting too much strain on the vehicle but I am now concerned that I may be damaging the transmission by towing at all. If that is the case why do Volvo offer the towbar kit as an option. Now confused. Help. I know there are several engineers and also long term caravaners on the forum who can offer a decent opion on this subject. Please. Cheers Concrete Read more

Some manufacturers, when building a car at the factory with an optional towbar, also fit extra gearbox oil cooling capacity - which is why some OE optioned towbars seem very expensive.

Some maufacturers also carry out engineering tests of vehicles out in Nevada and Death Valley with fully laden vehicles towing laden trailers. The vehicle has to cope with seering temperatures, often on inclines with aircon going full belt too....

My independant garage has suggested an engine flush before the new oil change.

My question is will this help clean the oil pipes which lubricate the turbo or is this merely transfering gunge back into the sump and oil pump but will obviously leave when the flush is drained. How much flush remains to dilute the new oil?... Read more

RJP seems very keen to put John F in his place - not for the first time.

John F has his views. Others may regard them as extreme, odd, or whatever. That doesn't mean someone else who happens to disagree is entitled to be offensive about him. I notice John F's tone on this forum is consistently calm and pleasant, unlike that of some of his detractors....

I cannot get radio out to get serial number to get the code can you help please please please Read more

You really do need the serial number. Usually, getting the radio out is not a big problem. You may need a couple of very simple special tools which are little more than shaped wires, available at motor spares places. For example:

I think SLO hit on something earlier when he mentioned the citirover should have been badged as an austin.

When the last of the Autin Rover badges cars were killed off they had a bed repuation and without the sporty image that MG has so can't see any point in that name coming back.

Hi

Hoping someone can help my partners boot lid on her VW Beetle is playing up. So it opens via remote then fails to open. Lights flash but no sound, I go through to the boot via the back seat and pull the emergency cord to open the boot manually. I then close the boot and it now works fine via the remote fob. However that only lasts a few times and then back to it not responding to the fob repeat process by manually opening the boot and it works again on the fob.

I've looked online and not seen any thing much regarding this.

Any ideas ? Read more

Without any further tests,it is difficult to come to any positive answer. However,a fault in either the release actuator or the boot latch could cause your problem. There is a micro switch in the boot latch,if this is faulty, then it will not allow the relase system to work.

Just looking for some advice on my car.

I need to know the best method to drain my engine oil out of my 2013 Vauxhall Corsa.

I've been searching the web for the answer but had no luck.

It's the 1.7 CDTI diesel version with 123bhp, if this helps.

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure your mole tips are fully legal?

No, I'm not a lawyer. But oily paws and a bad smell seems more humane than crushing them to death with a mole trap which is what I used to do....

Alarm goes off randomly when unlocking car, I've had lots of advice and failed to cure it. I've now had enough, and out of respect for my neighbours I wish to silence the alarm. It appears to be behind the trim in the lefthand luggage area. Can I simply disconnect it? Or should I wire in its place a 12v bulb of similar wattage so that the system "thinks" the horn is still there? Or am I in danger of really messing things up?

Any advice gratefully received! Read more

Success! Many thanks, "elekie". Easy job, peace reigns, grateful neighbours. The reason why I was a bit wary of simple disconnection was that I'd read somewhere that some systems have an anti-tampering device which shuts everything down if you interfere with the wiring.
