Car has just failed its MOT for the following:

DIY, probably just the cost of the drop link, maybe a tenner, if it needs new rear shoes maybe £20, might need a new exhaust hanger, could be £20 if it needs welding on, so £40 + the price of a tub of elbow grease.

Hello all,

So I was removing my EGR valve and pipe, and in doing so I moved the battery out the way.
I neglected to put the battery bracket back before driving to work (the bracket had fell down the back of the battery). After a while, I noticed it was difficult to get into 5th and 6th gear, so I pulled over and removed the bracket, which had lodged itself in the mechanism.... Read more

Found out the problem (or rather, my wife did)!

I took the gear change mechanism out and I couldn't for the life of me find out what was causing just 3rd gear to stick....

Hi all.

The situation is as follows. I've purchased a car from a childhood friend. I need the car for work so was keen for a quick sale. He was fine with this but advised that he does not currently have a registration certificate as he is in the process of transferring registration from his Dad (the previous registered keeper) to himself. The registration documents are currently with the DVLA but I've got a photocopy. Naturally, I would never normally buy a car without documents but I have known him for 15 years and have no doubts whatsoever about his trustworthiness.

I have insured the car and put my friend's name down as the registered keeper but myself as the owner. I understand that under the new car tax regime, tax becomes invalid 'at the point of sale'. However, my friend remains the registered keeper and is taxed in his name so I'm not sure this 'informal' sale between friends counts. He is convinced that I'm good to go and I've got no reason to disbelieve him, especially since he's a special constable. He argues that I don't need tax as he's still the registered keeper and only when the new V5 comes through (which he'll then post back off again and give me the VC5C/2 New Keeper Supplement) will I need to worry about it.

Could someone advise whether I'm ok to drive this car? Many thanks for your help . Read more

Check the he taxed it when he took it over, as DVLA will count it as a change of owner and cancel the original tax his Dad had paid for....

Cheers, will do.

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I've got to renew the mugshot on my photo card and I've come to the bit about my vision. I wear glasses when driving due to being short sighted, but do I need to fill in the V1 form and send it with my application? I don't have any other vision issues. Read more

The reality is no one wants "a reliable car". Reliability does not sell. No one wants advice on buying a reliable car.

What 99.9% buyers want is someone to tell them they car they *want* for a whole host of other reasons is the best possible buy and the one they should go for, Do not just think this is "young" buyers either - it applies to everyone....

The Mayor obviously thinks that you can carry on polluting as much as you like as long as you stump up the charge. It's just a money making racket. At least Dick Turpin had the courtesy to wear a mask when he was robbing you. If he's serious about preventing all these deaths he would simply issue a complete banning order on diesels with certain exceptions such as essential deliveries, taxis with the latest engines, emergency services etc.

I have two parts to my question, 1) legal 2) technical car question

we bought a Left hand Vauxhall Astra via a dealership Nov 23rd, 2016. For the last say 2 months it goes really slow when you accelerate at certain times (no defined pattern) but often at say a roundabout when pulling away or when switching lanes on motorway, it lasts about 45 seconds on a roundabout but on straight driving about 3 seconds so it will mantain speed at say 60 miles an hour but wont go any faster than that, then it speeds up suddenely. ... "You have ended up paying £4400 for a virtually worthless car just because your husband wanted a sunroof. Looking on Autotrader you can get a 2004 Astra diesel for less than £1500, most are less than £1000. You have paid £3400 for a sunroof and LHD (which no one else wants."

I was offered a 2004 Astra H 1.8 auto recently with 66,000 miles and a nearly complete history but short Mot for £500 a few weeks back. I bid him £400 which was angrily refused. Best I'd get back for it would be £1k with a years ticket (older autos are a hard sell) so it wasn't worth more to me.

The older gent in question was outraged by my offer so I politely wished him well and walked away. After nearly a month of trying to flog it for £500 his son gave up (after not a single inquiry) and text me last night to accept my initial £400 offer but with now no Mot and the anger in his fathers eyes when I origionally bid him I decided to leave it be.

This is the true value of a 13yr old Astra auto I'm afraid, and this one had a sunroof too.

I like to keep in touch with my household suppliers--and for better or worse acess to my energy provider, broadband and telecoms supplier is fairly easy on line and basically satisfactory. Howver-am concerned withr the relationship with my water company though. Have paid water "rates" for over 40 years now and have never(ever) in all that time had cause to contact them over any issue whatsoever( and i am sure there are many like me). ... Read more

Water supply, it would seem is a post code lottery. Tales of woe from most areas except Northumbria and Scottish Water, where water is plentiful and hose pipe bans are unheard of. Most areas rely on reservoirs and aquafers to retain water for constant use, in Northumbria and Scotland there are large areas of natural lakes plus the Kielder project, it would seem the less total reliance on man made storage systems the fewer problems the water companies have, so customer service has a different priority. All in all though the price we pay for constant water supply is quite cheap. Just try to manage a few days without mains water to appreciate the benefits.
