I don't remember specific initiatives to encourage purchase of diesel cars from the government. If I recall, Vehicle excise duty was structured to reduce CO2 emissions, meaning any small petrol car would also be beneficial tax wise. Or indeed, a hybrid. Of course Toyota saw this coming about 15 years ago, hence the investment in hybrids. The French government did indeed encourage diesel purchase by slashing fuel taxes, and it is still even today cheaper to buy DERV over there. In the UK, we have never had a fuel tax structure to encourage diesels.

Manufacturers also must take some responsibility, as the forthcoming death of the passenger car diesel is undoubtedly hastened by the lack of trust with the industry following VW/Audi debacle and mis-handling. A pity, as the modern diesel is cleaner than its ever been and there is a danger of all diesels being tarred with the same brush. ...

I read a similar case a number of years back, for a smaller amount but still in excess of £5k. Basically it has to add up for them to persue you through the courts. Get one parking invoice (and it is an invoice not a penalty) and ignore it and you'll get a few nasty letters then nothing further but too many people up here in sunny Scotland mistakenly take this for a parking free for all. Run up enough of them to cover the cost of coming after you and they'll be on your ass.

I've gathered a couple in the last few years, both minor infractions in supermarkets when I overstayed my welcome by a few mins and neither has been paid or heard from again after the usual few letters but I won't make the mistake this lass made by abandoning my car there all day every day from now on.

They make a few costly examples from time to time to hit the headlines and scare folk into paying up but I've yet to find a single case of an unpaid parking invoice being taken to court in Scotland for a small amount as in one or maybe two ignored.

I would imagine it would make a good tow car but It may not have a homologated tow weight due to what it's original construction was designed for.

For civil motoring claims the registered keeper has no duty to anyone to name the driver of a vehicle. It is not reasonable to assume anything when making a civil claim.

This applies in England and Scotland. PPCs have tried it and been thoroughly rounded on by Judges for attempting to use powers they simply don't have.

It is down to the person bringing the claim to ensure the correct person is in front of the Judge.

However, a single defence of 'I wasn't driving' has never been advised.

This case changes very little. The stupid have always lost in Court.

HJ has not for the first time spoke about when joining a motorway, that people already on the M way should accomadate the joining traffic and move to the right to let them do so if possible, even when the joining vehicle "assumes" you will disappear into the ether having failed to signal adjust their speed or even bothered to look at what is coming from behind.

HJ is not quite right when he says the law has never changed, it hasn't but it does not accomadate his version of what should happen in the Highway Code, which states.......... Read more

I was joining the 2-lane A55 when a van towing a caravan, despite having oodles of time to move to the middle lane and let me join the carriageway, steadfastly refused to shift and I had to slam on, having foolishly anticipated that he would do the sensible thing and move over.
