I'm confusing myself now. I think I need a diesel due to the mileage I travel to work, 62 miles round trip daily 75% of which is dual carriageway and motorway. I'm now worried about DPF and how it's been driven previously obviously affects that. It has to be an estate because I have dogs and it has to be reliable because I can't have a car that's in the garage every five minutes as this would not only cost money but result in time off work. I currently get an average of 60 mpg from my 03 astra estate and if I drive carefully can squeeze that up to 65 mpg.. I'm primarily looking at the ceed 1.6 cdri but have also had a look for petrol versions of the same car. According to HJ the quoted mpg for the ceed is not even close to the reality although these figures obviously depend on how the car is driven. If I use these figures as a benchmark the petrol version will cost approx £7 a week more in fuel so I'm still leaning towards the diesel. Cruise control would be nice as I have worn cartilage in my right knee, I also drive for a living so the less stress I put on it the better and obviously this too would affect fuel economy.
So now I'm looking for other suggestions apart from the ceed. I'm hoping to trade in the astra although it obviously won't be worth much. Budget is £5000, may be able to squeeze another couple of hundred onto that. Seat Leon has just been mentioned on my other thread but seems to be well oup of my process range. so far we have ... I purchased a new VW Caddy from a dealer at the end of September last year. By the begining of December there was a noise coming from the front when cornering. I contacted the dealer and told them I did not want the van but they said to contact VW customer services. VW customer services said I must give VW one chance to try and repair it . I took it to a different VW dealer as it was closer to my home for the repair under the instruction of VW customer services. They replaced the steering rack . This did not fix the problem . I contacted VW customer services again to take the van back and they said it should have went to the supplying dealer for the repair . Customer services admitted they gave me the wrong information. I took it it to the supplying dealer and they have replaced the gearbox and said the van is fixed and they want their courtesy van back. I told the dealer and VW customer services that I want a new van as this should not have happened on a van with less than 4000 miles. They have refused .
Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! Read more
Hi, I cannot tell if you have closed this off or not now as the thread has gone a little off piste by the looks of things, but hopefully I can provide some qualified opinion.
1) If you bought the vehicle as a private individual then you have protection under the Consumer Rights Act (as you are a Consumer). if however you bought it in some business capacity, even as a Sole Trader, then you are not a Consumer and the CRA is as much use in this situation as a Harry Potter novel....

Don't quite understand the necessity of including a detailed description of the OP's car in the subject line? Just trying to be 'flashy', I suspect.
For them at VW there are no customers in Europe.
Only regulations and laws, but they seem not very sorry for breaking them.
Bottom line: quality, trust and compliance are words VW ignore and repel. Read more
I have had a long running battle with VW regarding this.
I believe my 2011 2.0TDI passat has lost power since the update. Ive been back and fourth on the phone to head office who tell me there is no evidence of power loss.
They then said my complaint had gone to the emissions team and they would be in touch within two weeks, after 2 months I had nothing back.
I then email stating I would be taking legal advice and I had a phone call within two hours telling me to take the car in for a diagnostic test, they had previously told me this is not required!
I battled with the guy on the phone and told him a diagnostic test will not tell us that I have lost power and would only tell us if something was not working correctly, he did not understand this!! I explained I would take it on a rolling road if they want me to prove it.
Anyway, I took it for the diagnostic and nothing was found! I then got in touch with VW who have now said the case is closed, nothing they can do and theres nothing wrong with the car.
I dont have clear paper evidence there is but Its highly likely, I tried talking to them about how many of the VW customers cant be wrong and they should listen, they had no answer!
A letter shortly after arrived from VW giving an in depth explanation to the fix, Nox, injectors and all that and that theres no evidence and all that!
I give up, VW are nothing but liars!
This was all along side my clutch pressure plate snapped at 55k miles which VW agreed was a defective part but they wouldn't do anything as I took it else where for the repair. At the time we thought it was the dual mass flywheel, everything had to be replaced though. And... the broken pressure plate ended up scoring its way through the gear box housing, 4mm further and the engine oil would have come in to flywheel housing!
And... my old man bought a Tiguan 13 plate 12 months ago... knocking injectors appeared after the update, back to VW 5 times, they some how made it better with 'another' update, still not right though!
I went to the local dealer's Civic launch event this evening.
They had chosen a top of the range model in black. Being all black it toned down the black plastic features in the fussy bumpers which, when the car is in a contrasting colour, jump out at you. In black it looked pretty good and far better than it appears in pictures.... Read more
lets all give Honda the encouragement they deserve for supporting the UK by building the new Civic for world distribution and with no support from the UK government unlike Renault / Nissan and probably Vauxhall

Read the ecu to see if there are any error codes which might yield a clue.

Thanks Edithgow,
I should be ok, with the mig.
tbh, it doesn't look that difficult.... (famous last words :) )
it seems time consuming for a beginner like me.
If I make mistakes, I can just grind it down and lay some more weld on top.
I may have to do 2 pieces and weld together to get the right 90 degree shape..and then make sure there's no sharp edges, ...or sharp angles too.
It should be fun, on a good day.
Cheers
Liam
Looking to buy nearly new hatchback. 6 month old audi a3 is about 20k,similar golf about 17k but a 1.2 turbo auris can be had for about 13k with tons of kit and warranty. Seems a bargain. Am i missing something? Thanks. Read more
Toyota Safety Sense was optional on the Auris up to the 2017 model year revisions. So if one is looking for a six month old Auris, that may well not have Toyota Safety Sense.
I had a rear parking sensor fitted almost 3 years ago by a local Auto Electrician and had no problems until last week. I broke down in the City Centre due to an Electrical Fault caused by water pooling in the rear battery compartment. Cabling (of the stop/start) had eroded due to 3" of water which had entered over time through the access hole above the wheel arch. The original grommet (seal) was found on top of the battery which had not been cut or re-fitted by the Auto Electrician after he had fed the rear parking sensor cable. He denies any wrong-doing and claims there is no evidence that work had been done after his install and the grommet was taken out by someone else. I have a bill in excess of £600 (breakdown was 150 miles from home). The repair centre have found the only area of water entry is through this access point. I have the original receipt, the repairers report, photos of the water pooling and the original grommet (thoughlessly left on top of battery)
Does anyone have advice/recommend a course of action to seek compensation for a product which was poorly fitted almost 3 years ago and has led to this electrical failure & breakdown?... Read more
Nearly 3 years ago, so should have had 2 sevices since then, and they found nothing, or did nothing to check that battery compartment?
First..I've had lots of cars including petrol , high milegae diesels etc so not generally all the pitfalls and arguments or petrols vs diesel etc as I will be doing about 6k miles a year
..BUT I dont know these cars..I have around £ 1200 to spend on a car which generally will be used locally, once a week to visit clients(50miles) and 2 or 3 times a year trips to cornwall(300miles)...... Read more

I know of one Ceed that was pre-registered because it did not have a DPF, it was in our dealers showroom.
At this time new Ceeds were in high demand and most cars were factory orders, ours was. The only stock cars were unpopular colours. Kia did not (and do not) have a options list that enables dealers to fill their showroom cars with £1000's of options that no one with 1/2 a brain would want....
