Assuming you mean Northern Irish plates as in the CAZ example above that's fine. Check with your insurer though as ISTR some policies have conditions exclusions relating to NI.

Plates from the Repuplic in form year - county - serial (eg 12 C 4567) would be a no no.

Borderline really. Assuming it's tidy enough and runs ok and there's no rattling timing chain you'd get £800-£1,200 selling it privately but you could just as easily spend £600-£700 and something else fails. If funds are tight and you can't borrow what else would you get for under £1,000 that's going to be much better though?

I'd probably agree that it's not worth repairing. The 1.0 is notorious for suffering from rattling/stretched timing chains and isn't well liked by the trade. You'd likely fix it on the cheap and it would either be done badly and cause further problems or something else will go pop.

If you can aford to buy a newer car at a dealer then many large firms don't even drive trade ins of this value. I got £1,300 for my sister in laws knackered Fiat Punto at our local Vauxhall dealer last week on a heavily discounted new Corsa because they were daft enough not to drive it or look under the hood. I also got £500 for the other halfs Pug 106 I was going to scrap a few years back against a nice cheap Civic again because the salesman didn't bother checking it over... engine was ready to seize. You might get away with it but this relies on your ability to aford a newer motor.

We have just taken on board a customer who was originally going to go with Company A.

They filled in a finance application form (and were also told that to apply for finance they would need to sign the order form up front) and went on their way. They also approached us for a quotation and we came in £15/month cheaper. Logically the customer decided they wanted to go with us for the reduced rate realising Company A were clearly not competitive. Only 2 days after they did the finance application, they contacted Company A and said they did not want to use them.... Read more

Well done on your deal.

It is worth pointing out that different customers require different types of financial products.
Some with an avenue to buy and some just contract hire.

Either way there are several key factors in finance for cars:
1) cost of funds (how much it costs to borrow £x)
2) manufacturer discount
3) dealer and/or funder discount
4) Residual value

This all forms the total cost of ownership which is more important than a low interest rate.

Just because cost of borrowing is cheap doesn't mean overall that is the best deal for a given person.
A 0% finance deal on a car with a certain discount can cost more than another deal with say 9% Apr but a much bigger discount.
If you have no intention of keeping a car beyond 2 or 3 years, often contract hire is much cheaper overall.

I am getting irritated by petrol stations with mini supermarkets attached. Customers drive up to a pump-fill up-then go inside to "pay" . But no no--they then do a nice slow basket shop, fill up with a take away coffee then stroll back to their car as if they've go all the time in the world.

It would never occur to these people that should they wish to do their shopping--there are others queueing up behind their vehicle--or do they just not care less?... Read more

Just like the Shell garage in Wakefield...or quite a lot of others

I don't find them any better than a town supermarket type filling station, coffee pastries toilet visits etc, the queue you choose is still a gamble, plus i'd rather not pay BP's prices, or Shell's or Esso's or Q8's nor anyone else who's 5-15p more expensive per litre .

It's already four years in Northern Ireland. I bought s car in 2008 in the Midlands. It was still road worthy when I sold it in 2011. I never had to have it in the garage. The only thing I ever did was change the light bulbs. Read more

Mods, would you mind leaving this here for the evening to get a few views and hopefully comments? Bike is a fuel injection model so some comparable tech to cars.

Basically even in this cold snap, it starts and runs fine but the last third of the the throttle travel causes the engine to bog down, losing speed even on downhill sections.

I wondered if the tank was vacuuming but opening the cap briefly didn't make any difference.

As I've only just bought it, it's going back to the dealer tomorrow but I need it for work so anything sensible I might be able to suggest would be handy. I wonder if if it's a faulty throttle position sensor. Read more

Scooters use a CVT type transmission. Some bigger bikes use a DCT (Dual Clutch) like VW's DSG but less troublesome. Never seen a Torque converter on a bike - though the Boss Hoss might be an exception.

Without sounding stupid how do I do this please

Check the exhaust temp for each cylinder. A pair of low ones i.e 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 indicate an ignition fault. A single low one indicates which cylinder has the issue. It could be fueling or something internal such as a faulty valve.
