Hi All,

Which luxury car would it be easiest to remove the chasis from the body?... Read more

Surely the cost of separating and then putting the chassis and body back together would negate a substantial part of the saving. And with modern electrics (sensors) getting it all working together would be a nightmare. Maybe OP should try it with a Herald first!

I didn't really get the urge to display these 'special' registration plates. However each to their own. Jimmy Tarbuck has COM 1 C, which always brings a smile, but most are very tenuous and you need some help figuring them out.

Had a few interesting ones in my early days. 1787 KW was one. Might be worth something now to Kevin White, born 1/7/87!!! But after 1963 a suffix letter was added, then a prefix, then the current system. It did creat a few interesting combinations, but again you had to have most explained, which clearly misses the point of having one....

What on earth BT? I wonder if someone had the axle apart previously and got (interchangeable?) hubs reversed, surely to goodness this wasn't factory standard?

I couldn't believe it as well, but it was true. I can't find it now, but the KIA Pride was also known as the Ford Festiva in America, where there's a flourishing community and the Mazda 121 elsewhere: fordfestiva.com/forums/cmps_index.php...

Hi, my 2003 Micra SE runs fine most of the time, but every so often the immobilizer doesn't turn off and I'm unable to start the car.

I've read that this could be down to interference. But I have found that disconnecting and then reconnecting the battery seems to sort it out. Also If I leave it for a while and try again it will start OK (must pick up the key fob signal).

What I want to know is if I wire up a new momentary start switch, with it's own separate wiring, with one going to the battery (with an in line fuse) and the other one to the small wire on the starter. would this work OK or could it cause problems.

I would only use it in case of the immobilizer not picking the key fob signal up. I've read other people saying that when they have had the same problem, their car will start with a bump, so I'd think an extra switch would solve the problem and save me from having to set the radio code and the computer up each time.

My main concern is, if I left the original starter wire going to the small starter terminal, when I turn the new starter button on, could it damage the relay on the original wire or anything by sending power up the original wire.

Would my new starter button only work well If I disconnected the original starter wire? Read more

Cheers for the info, I ended up putting some new wires in, fuse holder, and fitted a momentary switch.

Bit of confusion going on there as the heading of the story says 20 seconds, which is quite acceptable.

I wouldn't worry too much about trucks going 0-60 in 5 seconds though, can you imagine what state the load would be in?, and that assumes any of it was still actually inside the trailer as opposed to on the ground where the truck accelerated from! Read more

It seems tesla won't be on their own with the idea of the electric truck. Whilst browsing images of the tesla truck, i came upon something similar but different by a new(ish) company called Nikola who favour hydrogen fuel cell to power the electric motors. They claim 30 seconds to 60mph under load, or about half the time of a diesel truck. They also claim that it will maintain 65mph up 6% gradient and have a range of 800-1200 miles. And the fact that it weighs up to 2000lbs (907kg) less than a diesel truck means you can put more in the trailer.

One million people have been offered these courses this year. £12 million pounds has been taken into police funds and there is no data to indicate course effectiveness. Speed cameras are proliferating, the chief constable of Bedfordshire wants to turn on motorway cameras 24/7 solely to fund his dwindling police force. Draw your own conclusions. Read more

3. Is it possible to attend a course voluntarily? I'm guessing that if this were the case, the scheme would become a victim of its own success and the "kind" insurance companies which offer discounts would have to reconsider their policy.

Never been on a SAC, but you can do an 'Assessment drive' with IAM....

Another case in the papers this morning of thieves relaying the signal from a remote inside a house to a Mercedes on the driveway. Why can't these remotes have an on/off button just like a tv remote? Is that so difficult? Read more

We had the burglar alarm wired so the remote plipper, which stays with us in the bedroom, activates all circuits apart from the one in the bedroom (children long fledged), when we go out if we use the control panel to arm/disarm and that then includes the sensor in the bedroom, we like the alarm on at night we like the rest of the house set for early warning, you could always cover the bedroom sensor and still have the house alarmed at night.

Good point about perimeter PIR lights, well worth the time and relatively low cost....

Am I alone in missing the logic of the point made about faraday cages etc. How does this stop the car being stolen if it can be taken even if the keys are out of range ?

Also, maybe these annoying keyless entry systems could be improved if Mercedes gave a means to switch the system OFF ! Read more

I purchased a couple of faraday wallets off ebay for about 3 quid each, and they work. BTW, does the box the thieves use remember the frequency, so it will act like a key away from the original key in the house. That's how I would design it. I have an immobiliser and a tracker, but I suppose they are redundant if they can get to the key frequency.

Over the last year i have experienced an annoying fault with my skoda's on board computer. It keeps giving my wife a higher 'eco score percentage' when we have driven on the same routes. This is clearly a fault as my driving is much better than hers. It seems the harder I try the worse my score. I am still able to offer advice to my wife regarding how she drives but feel she and the car are working together to undermine my confidence. Should i go back to the main dealer to get the computer re- programmed or sell the car? Read more

Those eco score thingies have been in lorries for some years, aftermarket to keep extra layers of admin in non jobs, and now standard fit in some.

Scoring well on the system doesn't necessarily translate to good fuel economy nor maintaining reasonable progress, in fact quite the opposite can be the case, some companies base fuel bonuses on these things, where those who have the worse MPG figures get the max bonus, and in some cases those who get the best fuel consumption don't get any fuel bonus at all....
