Anyone any knowledge of night driving glasses? Do they work and if so any product recommendations? Read more

I'm also in the sceptics camp - they may reduce glare by lowering light transmission, but by the same token will reduce visibility in poorly lit / night surroundings.

Looking back at the 2014 thread, I note that Scot (who posed the similar question) ended the thread stating that he had purchased a pair of "night driving glasses" and was pleased with his purchase ... I woould be interested to hear whether 3 years on he is still wearing them when driving at night?

Hello,

My 2015 Ford Fiesta 1.0 iitre 5 speed ecoboost has a groaning noise commensurate with road speed, the noise remains even when neutral is elected at all speeds. I don't think it is a wheel bearing(s) as the noise remains the same on whatever lock is applied Any ideas please?... Read more

This sounds more like tyre noise - try swapping tyres front to back on the same side, in case they are directional tyres - it it alters the noise, makes it better or worse, that's the answer.

Quite a common problem that develops as tyres wear, variously called feathering, cupping or sawtooth wear.

In a nearly new or new Passat with a manual gearbox.

Write ups seem to indicate that the 1.4 is pretty good in a Golf but can't find anything on a Passat. Wondering if the 1.4 might be a stressed engine and if the 1.8 might be a better bet but can't fnd much on that.... Read more

Test drive one - they are impressive but are very different to a diesel.

I'll only be buying petrol from now on. I have the previous gen less powerful 125ps 1.4tsi in a Superb II and it tugs it along surprisingly well and is very quiet, relaxed (not stressed) and economical on the motorway (60mph = 2000rpm). At it's best with long drives on European motorways...

Item on the TV news last night saying 100,000 people in the region were in "fuel poverty".

I don't dispute that some find it hard to heat their houses to the temperature they would like, but these days I think expectations in this regard, as in many others, can be unrealistic.... Read more

The government did say last year they were going to get these charges lowered as the fuel is being paid for in advance. as far as I know it has not happened yet, like a lot of thing government keeps saying it never happens!

AIUI pre-pay tariffs were capped from April 2017. That may though have the unintended consequence of, like University tuition fees, simply creating a standard price. It needs some real competition to drive prices down. Pre-payment users though display exactly same inertia about switching as those on credit meters. ...

I've just swapped over the summer for winter set of wheels and tyres on SWMBO Subaru Outback, and i'm tatered, i feel the cold these days, me knees ache along with just about everything else.

In theory easy as pie, i have an impact driver gun, and a quality trolley jack (one of my must haves, i will not use a cheap supermarket toy jack) and all the tools i need, but every time i now do some car work the getting up and down isn't getting any easier.... Read more

You mentioned Halford s bulb changing service. I took my Audi to get the number plate bulb changed as I thought wrongly that they had far better equipment than me to tackle this tricky job.

The technician arrived with a star shaped screwdriver tool with three sizes of cross head. I knew he would have trouble and after 5 minutes of struggling he confessed i needed to take the car to a garage !!!...

I hate it when people ask for advice and then change the goal posts once you suggest a solution. So here goes with all the goal posts and constraints. When the skoda comes off lease i want to buy a car that will; only be used to pull a 1500kg caravan twice a year, be used for short town based comutes(10-15) the rest of the time, is quiet and comfortable and has a large boot. I was thinking of petrol as i am concerned about dpf issues. Budget about £8,000. Your thoughts....(can include sell caravan!). Read more

Had further discussions at home and traffic may flow faster next year as the caravan might be on the way out. We would need a decent family car with luggage space but without the hauling capacity-so an Octavia or as Big John says, a Superb again. Just had a test drive in a new Dacia Logan today and thought it was not too bad for the money. It was quiet but the wife who sat in the back said it was 'truck like' (I think that was the word she used) and not comfortable. The search has been made simpler now i feel. thanks for all the responses so far.

Some years ago, we had a dangerous stretch of road fitted with the self illuminating type cats eyes. They were superb......and then four kids were killed on that stretch when it was believed that the driver switched off his lights and tried to drive by the cats eyes alone, so they removed them!
