Just a quick one about anti freeze.

Ford specify a particular type for use in their cooling systems; presumably other manufacturers do the same. How much importance should one attach to those recommendations? How different is any one anti freeze from another?... Read more

I've topped up the anti freeze in most of my previous cars when the level has been just above, or just below Minimum and the liquid has been cold, and on no occasion has there been any obviously detrimental effect on the vehicle's cooling system.

Maybe I've just been lucky.

Hi, exhaust stinks, think its PDF and CAT, is it goosed or can it be recovered?, EML is on with the antipolution warning, had to drive home a long way in limp mode with turbo shot and belching smoke, just had to do it! I'm changing the turbo, is there an additive product or are we past that!!! thanks, Mike. Read more

Picking up the Toyota on the 01/12/17 . It's from a neighbour who has it serviced on a regular basis & generally looks after it; is in good condition with 68K on the clock.

In terms of oil, Toyota recommend a viscosity 5W - 30, though no specific guidance on semi or fully synthetic. The present owner doesn't know what oil has been used in the past.... Read more

Thank you - fully synthetic it is then.

If these vehicles have no MOT, then am I correct to think they'll not have Road Tax (VED) and or Insurance..?

To "forget" to have an MOT seems somewhat careless, if a vehicle is on annual services and the MOT is done at the same time, can one assume they're not being serviced either?

If the DVLA can send you an email reminder for your Road Tx. Why not for your MOT.

My Brother in law who is 83 was driving to a hospital appointment this morning and suffered a low speed blow out, stopped safely, called RAC and when explaining, they sent a Taxi for him to get him to the hospital on time and arranged to meet him and recovered him to a tyre fitters afterwards. While waiting, 2 other people offered to take him as well.

Whilst it's very nice to hear that I'd not say it's a surprise - depsite what you read/hear/see in the news the majority of people are kind and helpful.

I'm sure that's true, although many of us probably let our very sensible suspicion that there are many con artists around get in the way of us being as public spirited as we would wish. Assuming everybody deserves your help is a sure way to be taken for a ride. Sad.

I saw some I20 Coupes up for sale on Autotrader. 2016 registered but with delivery miles. Presumably they have been sitting in a carpark for the last year. Would this be an issue affecting condition or not a problem. I suppose even new cars will sometimes have spent months between leaving the factory and being prepped at a dealer.

I'm asking out of curiosity only as while my wife will be needing a new car in a few months we are not at the point of buying.... Read more

In our technology-laden world, there really is no excuse for anyone not setting a reminder - either electronically of for us Luddites, in a diary.

Our hi tec method is to keep a small ring binder for each car with MOTs, service history and V5 in in clear plastic wallets .At the front is a 1 page sheet with key dates: insurance, RFL and MOT... So easy to see at a glance..

Hi

I can recently hear a faint metallic rattling noise from I think the exhaust - is this anything to worry about?

I'm not sure if it's just a loose exhaust pipe?

It's kind if like a hollow metallic ringing sound? Read more

In one of his "What has HJ been asked ..." replies he mentions that new car prices are set to rise.

Anyone any idea when and what the basis for such a rise is? Read more

they can increase the list price as much as they wish, like anything, people will only pay what they consider the correct price to be.

What I am told is happening, financial houses are concerned about the diesel residual price drop off and are increasing costs, especially diesel lease costs to cover any continued negative trend....
