My Peugeot 206 1.4 petrol (2005) had clutch trouble the other day. I was in slow moving traffic and the clutch pedal started to feel loose at the bottom as I pressed it down and the car stalled a few times. Also some cracking/clicking noises going on. Then I couldn't get the car in gear with the clutch pedal pressed all the way down. It was taken to a garage which I haven't used before (new to the area) and they had it for just short of 2 days. At first they said they had driven it around fine and couldn't find a fault with it! They asked what the roadside assistance mechanic thought was wrong with it and I told them that he thought it may be the clutch cable and the adjuster that goes with it.

So the garage changed the clutch cable and I picked it up this morning. The clutch still feels loose at the bottom and I can't seem to get the right clutch control in first and second gear now.... Read more

Hi, i have a VW Golf 2.0ltr tdi (2009).

When stationary i can smell exhaust gas fumes coming through the air vents.

i took my car to kwik fit, they put it up on the lift and had a look at the exhaust underneath.

Guy said it looked fine, but noticed some carbon / oil deposits on some pipes under the engine. he said maybe its just due to age but get an experienced mechanic to have a look at it....

Well the title says it all, really. I've been having a problem with fumes getting inside my Focus. My mechanic inspected the exhaust, fuel injector seals and much else. He came to the conclusion that the issue was caused by two things: the fact that the EGR valve was stuck open and the need for a DPF regen. The EGR valve has been changed and the fumes seem a little reduced - maybe. But there's still a kind of smoky, sooty smell getting in. Could that really be caused by a clogged DPF?

When I asked the mechanic for an explanation of how those two things could cause 'nasties' to escape the engine and then get in via the vents he said in both cases that it was a matter of unburnt fuel, but didn't elaborate.

Would like some feedback as to whether getting an artifical regen on the DPF is likely to help, and some explanation, perhaps, of how unburnt fuel can find its way into the air under the bonnet. I'm not knowledgeable about cars so the simpler the better! Thanks so much. Read more

55 plate, 81k miles. Only owned the car for a few weeks and have avoided driving it because of the fume issue. Car mostly runs well, though occasionally holds back a bit as pulling away, then comes to life at higher revs...

Other info: EGR valve had been stuck open, was replaced a week ago. I understand this may have contributed to the DPF clog.

Also: Pat fluid is showing as empty when car is hooked up to mechanic's computer. But there's actually plenty of Pat fluid!

Also, mechanic's computer is being prevented from initiating DPF regen. He will need to swap some box or other in the car to go ahead with regen, apparently. I wonder if something has been preventing passive regen ever happening!

Am becoming very inclined to sell the car, now! I would declare the issue when doing so of course (it's not immediately obvious on a test drive - I missed it!). Whatever I do, I'm losing a lot of money... sigh! I hope to minimize that by taking the most cost effective route forward in terms of repair, or by selling the car as is asap.

How many miles did you cover before the problem came back? If it was up to about 3,000, the discs probably have runout due to a dirty mating surface with the hub (rust or grit). Many lazy mechanics fit new discs without cleaning the hub properly, so everything is fine for a while and then the vibration starts under braking. It's called disc thickness variation and is caused by the pads "kissing" the two high points of the misaligned disc and gradually thinning it there.

A competent mechanic will clean the hub face carefully with a rotary wire brush before fitting a new disc. It's not hard to do and I've fitted discs myself which have run for tens of thousands of miles without problems. A really, really good mechanic will also check runout with a dial gauge after fitting, but this is impractical where the disc is only held in place by the roadwheel.

Hi all. Im not sure which forum this is better suited.

my friend has a 2013 1.0 ecotec corsa with 37.000 miles that failed to start the other morning. i thought it was the battery as it was very sluggish to start so tried jump starting. even though it was turning over really strong it wouldnt start. he desperatly needs the car got it towed to a garage who diagnosed a failed timing chain. i think the reason the battery was sliggish was because his good lady gave it a good few tries to start it up in the morning.... The lock/unlock for the tailgate hatch has got out of phase (as it were). Remote lock and unlock seems to function normally. If a door is opened after a few minutes, the hatch opens at the same time. It can be closed and everything behaves as normal, except that the hatch release near the rear no.plate has no effect.

Is there a way to reset the locking sequence ? Read more

SECOND UPDATE - the Doctor's original diagnosis calling for Plan B seems to have been correct. The problem returned, but has now gone away again. However thumping the tailgate near the hatch release can have the desired effect, so it seems that is the site of the problem. Haven't removed the interior trim yet, but may do if/when required.

Thinking about putting winter tyres have done so before and they tend to be better in winter conditions! But a whole lot of questions with my new car as it has run flats.
