I have a 2013 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 petrol does it have a timing chain or a belt ? does a chain ever need replacing

also when the Mrs started it this morning she said it shuddered a bit on start up but was fine after a few seconds could have just been down to the cold ?

This engine has a chain. In theory ,it should last the life of the engine,but in reality they don't,and usually start to rattle from cold start. This is often an indication that it needs to be renewed.

it's only done 37k so shouldn't be a problem yet surely ?

At that mileage,hopefully not. Just make sure you do regular oil and filter changes with the correct grade oil.
