The weekend before last we visited a local beauty spot. It has been pay ‘n’ display for many years but on this visit the parking machines had changed and needed you to input your registration number. This is obviously to prevent people passing on unused time to others.

My thoughts being is this actually legal? You have paid to use a parking space for a period of time – surely the specific car parked is irrelevant. Signs in many car parks say the transfer of tickets is illegal but is it and, if so, what law has been broken? After all if I get a doggy bag in a restaurant it does not say who can or cannot eat the food, and newspapers never say “to be read by the purchaser only”!... Read more

I'd be interested to know how much extra (unearnt) income is generated from these parking machines from the overlap between one car leaving (with unused time still running) and another entering and effectively paying twice for "x" minutes.
In many municipalities in Spain it is possible to set up parking payment via mobile phone and associated credit card to pay for on-street parking and then cancel unused time on returning to the car. There is also a "Phonecard" type prepayment system which works in a similar way. Parking wardens get very little confrontation in their jobs since about 40% of appeals succeed and they have a level of discretion which would be unthinkable - in my experience - in Britain. A warden once bunged me 20 cents of his own money to make up the minimum and on one occasion I was pardoned one wrong digit on my registration by a warden about to end his shift.
Another idea that is extremely popular in Spain is the 2, 3 or even 4 hour "window" of free parking at lunchtime.

Another Tax on the poor ! Read more

Alan Barnes

Here we go again....yet another sad example of what our great brains in Wasteminster and London will do .Yes, surprise surprise, charge motorists over the odds so that they will not use their vehicles very much or at all.What a load of old rubbish ! Instead of being proactive by investing taxpayers money into improved transport infrastructure and vehicle technology like they should have been doing anyway. All they ever do is charge [tax] people in the hope that it will be self regulating.This form of "control" follows the same simplistic ideas which are always rolled out when there is any sort of problem which they are obliged to resolve.
The solution is very easy , if not hard to swallow for those motorists which would be effective, just stop all ICE vehicles from being used altogether from cities and large towns etc now.They did this way back in the 60's when the smog was so bad that thousands of people died or were seriously health impaired by the burning of fossil fuels for heating and industrial use, and the was no great issue with that at the time.the same goes for tobacco smoking which they say causes great suffering and death to those who smoke , as well as having a huge effect on the limited recourses of the NHS.What do they do....virtually nothing except increase the tax on tobacco and impose labeling standards etc on manufacturing. If ,like the exhaust emissions , they really wanted to do something about that, then they should simply ban it, like class A drugs and firearms etc etc....what on earth is their problem ?! [apart from being very weak and stupid of course].....end of rant.

Thing is, most 'poor sots' don't actually buy cars, they lease them, so it won't really matter. Hopefully (not likely, I know) people who buy their car, will do some homework 1st?

That'll be a first - probably why so many people (first and only timers here) write in and ask either a) questions that have been asked several times, some in the same week, and can't be bothered to use the search function (which is easy to use, same for standard search engines for info) or b) are just lazy and want others to do the hard work (no homework) or will do none at all/ignore any and post-sale blame everyone but them if the car isn't suitable for their needs....

I am getting a putting noise from the rear left side when braking. The car has just passed the mot and nothing was mentioned although I suspect the exhaust is on it's way out. Could the noise be from the exhaust or is it likely to be from the brakes?

Thanks. Read more

Fuel/glow plug problem - hot running becomes a non-starter and RAC advised a faulty fuel pressure switch/sensor?

All the research I’ve done points to a ‘multi-function relay’ issue?

Would these be the same thing?

Is this easily replaced by a DIY’er?

Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks in advance.

One car I looked at a few years ago, a not very old Civic, had the car jacked up at some point in the centre of the side sill which caused a flat spot in the sill, they tried to fill with filler and did a terrible job of it

The undercover was missing on it from the engine oil drain plug which according to my mate who had a type R causes more air drag on the underbody and less MPG because of drag...

Has anyone been noticing the following on the Telegraph's website as regards their Motoring, sorry, 'Cars' section of late:

  1. A much reduced HJ Agony collumn (compared to his full one here every Saturday), infrequent (it used to be once a week some time ago and was very popular with online subscribers - lots of comments before);
  2. So-called 'car reviews' are little more than glossy adverts for premium German brands and performance cars. Almost nothing in the reviews about reliability and issues concerning customer service with the brand;
  3. When car reviews (e.g. the recent Audi A8) are listed, and have a user comments section at the end of the article, any negative comments (however politely put) are either summarily removed or the whole comments ection deleted. Some of the articles' authors have got quite shirty with people commenting and I suspect have been the cause of this.
  4. In my view, no more 'proper' investigative journalism into poor customer service/cheating/collusion/over-pricing or rip-offs as regards car firms (buying from or maintaining at) or independent garages, insurance firms and retailers or parts and equipment. Dieselgate is barely ever mentioned and, if I recall correctly, was only reported on secondhand and never had affected VAG's test scores in the reviews, nor has other reliabillity/customer service issues.

It seems the quality of the DT has gone downhill a LOT in recent years, yet are charging more and more for online subscriptions. To me, there's far more 'fluff' and the type of articles that I'd see on (IMO) cheesy so-called news websites like MSN and the Daily Mail/Express. Very little serious journalism any more. HJ and his team here is still doing great work, but there's far less decent journalism out there, in motoring and more generally than there was 10-15 years ago, even taking into account the hard economic times we've faced.... Like GB, I'm much obliged for the online library tip, Doubleug (...WG, I geddit!). I actually logged on a few years ago to get a few e-books, didn't realise so many magazines were fully accessible. (Wonder what the licensing terms are - these publications must be feeling the pinch.)
