Hi,
I have a faulty stereo on my Ford Focus. I have found a Ford Technical Bulletin and I am 99% sure it covers my fault.(Stereo not turning on after battery replacement).... Read more
Hello, we're probably going to have to leave both cars unused for about 5 weeks, and I'm after some advice about the batteries.
Firstly, for that length of time is trickle charging really necessary or advised?... Read more
I would be inclined just to disconnect the battery, its unlikely to lose much capacity in that time if its in good condition.
Is it just a case of replacing the glass or is there more to it? Many thanks Read more
The only electrical fault you could suffer with those symptoms would be excessive voltage but as everything else in the car uses the same supply I would have thought you would have had other failures.
You can check it by connecting a meter across the battery with the engine running, it should read about 14.4 volts.
Evening all, I recently had a ford focus 1.6 diesel which is now about to be written off due to a nonfault crash. I'm looking at really upgrading from my 10 year old focus to a newer Mondeo. What do I need to know/ask?
The reason I'm concerned is that I was stung by needing a new turbo in the focus which (I was told on here) is a relatively common issue with those cars. At the moment I dont want another diesel so I am looking at a petrol 1.8 mondeo, 2007 onwards (but second hand, not the newest model) with manual transmission.... Read more
I owned a 2002 1.8 petrol Mondeo from 3yrs old to 10 yrs old. Not much went wrong other than consumables. At 10 yrs old and 90k miles it was still on original exhaust/clutch.
The only fail to start was a failed fuel pump around 7 yrs old....
Hello All.
I have a 1991 XJ-S coupe auto. Got it 8 mths ago and run it occasionally. It had previously been laid up for just under a year, but fired up and ran fine. I have restored the interior (was very damp due to leaking screen and door seals).... Read more
Thanks all for your suggestions.
Compression test showed good compression in all cylinders. So I dried it out cleaned up the plug and it ran fine. I don't know how the water got in there but it hasn't recurred. Car is now MOT'd and has done about 80 miles since without any problems....
I enjoy driving turbo cars, but petrol turbo cars are thirsty. The only exception I am aware of is VAG's 1.4 TSI but that's currently above my budget.
I work generally work 7 days a week and trying to figure out if my driving pattern will be ok with a dpf... Read more
That sounds right, Dieseldogg. I believe that the chamber, or whatever you call it, for particulates was bigger in the post-09 VAG diesels, and DPF problems are therefore fewer.
Just wondering if the automatic transmission oil should be changed occasionally in this car or is it really a 'lifetime job'. There is no mention of it in the service booklet. The car is a 2006 with 200,000Klms. Read more
It was a common statement made by many of car manufacturers. ZF oil changes would have added £500 to the dealers service prices. Sadly good service practice lost out to lower running costs figures for fleet buyers sheadsheets.
Can anyone help me out with a stereo code for my dad he has just got a car and the code is not in the stereo Read more

Everyone seems to have great respect for your critique of VW Group diesels in the 2010 thread www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=87645 any chance of an update on current VW Group diesels.
My son has a Vectra-C Estate 150CDTi which seems to be getting every single problem that the Fiat diesel ever suffered - I'm thinking of helping him get a new Superb Estate as he needs a big car but I know that the BR doesn't rate VW Group nearly as high as it's popular reputation.... Read more
He's "only" doing about 12,000 miles/year - we thought he'd do about 15,000 when he bought the car - so he might be below the break-even point for diesel anyway - how reliable is the 1.8 TSi as there's no 2.0 TSi on the Superb ?
I had an eye test yesterday at a local opticians as I need new glasses. I'd gone to SpecSavers for the last 20 years. I was surprised at how thorough it was. He found scarring on the retina in my left eye, probably from toxoplasmosis before birth, and early stage cataracts in both eyes. That last bit was a shock, quite normal at 51 apparently. Numerous SpecSavers tests did not spot the scarring, or even the inflammation of a cornea due to wood splinters, which was only detected when the new glasses were no good as the prescription had changed between the test and getting the glasses.
Anyone else have thoughts on SpecSavers, or other cheapo chains, versus an independent. It seems to me that cheapo chains work on high turnover to reduce prices, and a poor selection of frames. Read more
That is very interesting. I ended up buying rimless glasses for £290 from the local shop. Expensive, possibly overpriced, but nice. Some of the prices in Godalming opticians made my eyes water.
What worries me is that online shops could wipe out high street shops apart from SpecSavers.
How old is the car?
If the warranty has expired on the whole car or stereo the dealer will charge you up front pending getting the warranty settled with Ford. Even if there is a Technical Bulletin it still does not mean your car is covered....
