I was driving along the motorway and the car started juddering and losing power. Was recovered by the AA to our garage but they can't findout what is wrong. AA man suspected an injector had gone (it is a diesel) as there is white smoke being emitted from the exhaust and it sounds like it is mis firing. The garage is now saying it could be a fuel pump. These are really expensive (I think) and was wondering if anyone else has any ideas. There are no warning lights on. Cheers Read more

Hi all.

I have a ford fiesta 1.25 zetec that has suddenly developed a misfire on number 3 cylinder. I have checked the plugs and all ok, I have replaced the leads and coil pack but has made no difference at all. When I looked at the plugs they were all the correct biscuity colour apart from number 3 which was black, sooty and dry. Any advice on what could be wrong will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Afternoon all,

I am writing in the hope that someone will be able to advise me. I need a car to commute to work, and would like to buy as soon as possible. My commute is 40 miles a day along an A road, usually with minimal traffic. It's likely it will just be me in the car, so I only need something small, and won't be needing a lot of boot space. My requirements are:... Read more

Recently, I stopped at Winchester services (southbound) and saw a pasty company there, There was a big sign on the wall saying 'all pasty's £2.00' but, When I looked at what they had, they were priced at £3.99.

I asked the man why there was this difference in price to be told that the £2 price only applies when they are about to close and that they close at a different time each day.... Read more

when I had an expense account I would occasionally stop at service areas but nowadays as I fund everything myself the only reason to stop is to refresh / use the toilets ... exception is the M4 near Heathrow where it is sometimes possible to book overnight hotel at a realistic price!

Looking to buy my first car in the next few months, and have a budget of around £4K.

Is there much scope for haggling at £4K? How low could I offer without being laughed off the forecourt? 10%? Read more

You need someone who knows cars to get some idea of the vehicle's condition. Tyres, brakes, exhausts, timing belts, all these sorts of things can cost....'fraid it's wear and tear mate so not covered by warranty'

Narrow your search down to a car or two you really like, gen up on prices and what to look for on the models you decide on....

Yesterday my car was damaged by the end barrier of a car wash suffering quite deep scratches to the front, offside front wing, headlamp glass and door mirror.

I'm awaiting the owners response to my claim but the attendant mentioned getting the scratches "polished" out but can I insist on a respray of the affected areas - not a total respray I hasten to add - as polishing out is not something I would willingly accept?... Read more

Well I have taken the car to a body shop on the instructions of the insurer and it will cost a little over £500.

I am not a little displeased that through no fault of my own I am £150 down because of my excess and no doubt my premium will be suitably raised next year even though I have no claims bonus protection....

I worked for 4 years in Sweden in the 70's, vehicle tickover was forbidden then due to petrol & diesel particulates being known to cause health problems, especially for lorry drivers. Problem was when the winter temp went down to -20c everybody ignored it. Read more

Can I name and shame the SEAT dealer or do we simply accept Seat dealers are rubbish and best avoided?

There have been discussions around this topic before. As a rule the desirability of dealerships has more to do with the staff and the local work ethic than the big badge on the forecourt. Rather like saying all French cars are junk - there are good and bad ones, like most other things.

I replaced clutch & gearbox in my peugeot 206 manual. I goes into all gears no problem. But when I put car into first gear & take my foot of clutch to pull away, car does not move. just wondering if gearbox I bought second hand out of ebay was faulty. Read more

Yes you said the lever goes into all the gears. Let clutch in = take foot off pedal. What I mean is will it set off in say 2nd, or reverse?

As you say it's probably the selector linkage that's not working rather than the clutch which is engaged by default if all the bits are there! But if it is engaging at least one gear properly that would eliminate the clutch as the issue is all I was getting at.
