Loose Chippings

In 2011 my car was recalled and a modification made to stop a possible issue of the horn not working when the lights are on.

Now 3 years on the car has developed the problem that the recall was supposed to fix. Should the dealer fix this for free based on this? The car is booked to go to the dealer who say will charge me for checking the fault but refund it if Vauxhall agree to a free fix..... Read more

Quite happy. Vauxhall picked up the tab for this repair. I suspected due to the age of the car they might not want to meet the costs but they did.

I gave up at 45% as I was struggling to put across my opinions via these questions and answers. There was also evidence of poor spelling such as your instead of you're, and poorly thought out questions such as : Immediate action is required to reduce CO2 agree/disagree blah blah.

There are no bad noises from the engine, the oil smells normal, the oil levels are also normal, the engine does not overheat and there are no excessive fumes.

Apart from the issue with the ignition leads which is being replaced today as previous ones ordered were wrong, the car drives very smoothly, is responsive and comes on instantly....

Just bought a 2005 honda accord executive and it has the 17" wheels fitted

was wondering if anyone else has terrible road noise from the tyres as i have had the bearings checked,is this normal!!!!! Read more

I had 17" wheels on a 2.4 exec and found that different tyres do make a difference. However when I changed to an Avensis, also with 17" wheels, I realised how much road noise the Accord had in comparison. If the tyres are well worn they do tend to make more noise. Check out the tyre rating sites to see the different db ratings for new tyres, there are some big differences. They do relate to noise outside but that is also relative to the noise inside.

Give HMRC a call, or perhaps DVLA, and ask them, then you'll hopefully get a definitive answer. As has been said, there will almost certainly be some tax to pay, probably based on the current value of the vehicle.

Hi all,

My parents are in their 70s and also market for a new (used) car. Currently they have a 2008 Mazda 3, which they've loved for its reliability and equipment level, and I assumed they'd just go and get another, but they're actually interested in seeing what else is out there.... Read more

I'd forgotten the Ford Fusion, and shouldn't have, because our near neighbour has one: he's over 70 and 6' 5" but is very comfortable in it.

So maybe add that to the list rather than the Jazz, which seems to fall foul of the seat / door-sill distance issue....

I've been the victim of a hit and run which has caused damage to my vehicle. Police are involved and there is evidence which is being examined. My insurer is pressuring me into using their approved garage to repair rather than me using my preference which is main dealer.

They are threatening to charge me for any excessive labour rates for example. Can anyone advise me how I stand please. I'm hopeful that this will be paid for via the third party's insurance not mine but am not certain at the moment. Car is still under manufacturer's warranty but I am advised that using non main dealer won't affect this. My experience of 'approved' repairers is dire with previous examples of poor fit and finish.

Thanks. Read more

I have a client who is an insurer approved repairer - a large company in Manchester. Having used him twice now for privately paid for work, I would not use him again. Better to use a small bodyshop or manufacturer approved only.

Totally agree, HB. That may have been the firm I was offered about 10 years ago - I declined in favour of a local bodyshop recommended by my regular indie, mainly because it was a lot nearer and I could discuss the job more conveniently. No regrets....

I had exactly the same and it probably means a new EGR is required. Not my old car is it?! Last three reg letters were TZL.

A code read will highlight the problem. It is possible to blank it off, on this model it needs a small hole drilling in the blanking plate.

While the EGR is off it would be worth doing a full clean of inlet manifold etc.
