My car is just over 4 years old with 40k miles. The driver's door is making a bit of a graunching sound when opened, the Citroen dealer says it needs new hinges. These are apparently not covered by warranty (I have Citroen extended warranty) but are considered "bodywork" problems and I've been advised to take it to a bodyshop. Slightly surprised/miffed at this. Am I being unreasonable? OK so it's a wear and tear item, but so are the tailgate struts which need replacing and these ARE covered by the warranty. Confused? Why having been told that diesel cars where very good for the envoirnment are we now being told that we will have to pay extra tax in the London congestion area. When I bought A Ford Focus Diesel, it was classed as a cat 4 emissions and we were encouraged to go down this route. What has happenned to have this policy reversed? Read more
No problem - there's some good discussion on both. Let's make this one read-only and ask people to make any comments on the other one.
Just been told by the Engineer working for my insurance group that my i20 is a write off. It was hit on driver's side while I was going through a green at a light controlled junction.
Don't know what shocked me more, the value he gave me, or him saying lcuky to be talking to him on the phone. Said I was saved by the A pillar as if the impact had been all on drivers door....... Read more

In 2012 I attended a presentation at Imperial College about Electric vehicles including the Tesla. The presenters told us that the batteries were likely to degrade after c.3years and buying or selling a second hand electric vehicle was therefore a bit problematic because the battery replacement costs were very significant.

They also told us that there is currently no technology for stripping down these used vehicle batteries to recover the valuable components or metals inside for re-use
As we do exactly that for current tech car batteries this sounds like total...'discharge'. ;)
Hi
I couldn't find any Headlights in the UK so i bought Headlights from Italy, the seller assured me that the Headlights are Legal in the UK, my old Headlights say E9 on them and the New ones say E4 which i believe are from Netherlands on them but the Headlight Pattern is different, the seller also said that... Lights in the UK dip to the left, in every other European country (including Italy and Holland) lights dip to the right because they drive on the opposite side. Some cars with projector lights have a simple device under the bonnet that changes the dip direction, most cars do not have this device.
On the lens there is always an arrow that shows the dip direction....
Interestingly, BMW in the USA have changed the recommended oil change intervals, no idea if they're doing so for other markets. The oil change is going to 10k miles.

Its pretty irrelevant to the rest of the world. On most US cars the oil change interval is still 6000 miles since manufacturers only spec a basic mineral oil.
The wifes Kia is service every year or 20,000 miles using full synthetic, same car in the US is service every 6,000 miles using vasic oil....
We live a couple of miles from the Castle Bromwich factory so I will keep my eyes peeled for one of these out on a test run, assuming that where they will be built.
I frequently see various Jags driving around on test plates, often 2 or 3 in convoy. Before the F type-R came out I could hear one out on test before I saw it as it was so loud!
Reversed on to pavement into a signpost (flattened post) when in a flap trying to park in angled space on main street. On pavement almost a yard, no pedestrians but if there had been could've injured someone. (wouldn't have been reversing if someone behind me) Police contacted by onlooker in restaurant.
I admitted at fault at scene - police mentioned Dangerous Driving and...my recollection...Re-sitting test, but might have been Driver Awareness.... Read more
Thank you. Her (even older) friend did same with neighbour's garage. She def isn't getting mixed up with pedals, but the control is still a serious issue.
I'm going to start with suggesting more lessons for her..leading up to a Mature Driving Assessment. We've talked about everything relating to her age including giving up driving. The major sting is 'to prevent memory loss, social activities stimulate the mind' and in her rural area it's a real disability to not have a car. Genetically, the memory loss is in the post so we're keeping a close eye on everything...and she's been cleared...only problem is anxiety. Vicious circle really.

What make are the gas struts? Do they say "Stabilus" on them?
Actually folks, you should consult the owners manual before lubricating hinges. Some have a phosphor bronze bush between the leaves and pin. this type of bush will not respond well to a mixture of grease and dirt - it becomes like a grinding paste and wears out the bush. Simply keeping them clean should be sufficient (though a little WD40 won't hurt as this dries off).
