Hyundai i20 - Write off settlement - Dougie68

Just been told by the Engineer working for my insurance group that my i20 is a write off. It was hit on driver's side while I was going through a green at a light controlled junction.

Don't know what shocked me more, the value he gave me, or him saying lcuky to be talking to him on the phone. Said I was saved by the A pillar as if the impact had been all on drivers door....

Looked at the book price for a 2009 5 door and it's just slightly less due to higher mileage.

Never been in this position before so would like to ask if there any pitfalls I should watch out for going forward or just wait for the cheque?

Thanks guys

Dougie

Even if its appears to be a good offer ask for more. They never give their best figure in the first offer, they just hope people fall for it.

If you don't ask you will never get.

Its up to the underwriters and ttheir procedures, some will up the offer slightly if you push them some wont wont.

If you are going to push for more you need to be able to justify it. Trawl the net for similar examples for sale and quote the asking prices and if you have a service history and receipts for things like recent new tyres you may also be able get a few quid more.

Few years back I was offered £3250 for a write off. I wouldnt have it and it took a month of negotions to get them to up the offer....I got an extra £50!. It wasnt worth the wait for the cheque or the effort.I put in.

Definitely. Helped me the last time I had a write-off.

Depends if you expect to get what it would cost you to buy your car from a trader, or what you wanted to get if you sold it privately. Not the same thing, and insurers may take the latter view?

Going through the same thing with my smashed, totalled Lincoln Town Car--offered just over $10,000. Definitely don't take the first offer they make. Let them come back with something better.

Your username is a blast from the past - I think you've had that car a while? Commiserations on its demise. :(

Unfortunately I only had the Town Car for a year and a half, from Dec MMXII. We ended up settling for not quite eleven grand and buying a Chrysler PT Cruiser to replace it. The PT is an OK little car, but I'm not used to something so small!

Quote from the Financial Ombudsman Service publication on motor insurance:

"In most cases, we assess the market value as the retail price which the consumer would have had to pay for a comparable vehicle at a reputable dealer, immediately before the date of the damage or theft. This may be lower than the price at which the vehicle is advertised, as the dealer may have built in a margin for negotiation. It is likely to be higher than the price payable in a private sale or at an auction and also higher than the trade value (which is the price a dealer would pay before adding its mark-up)."

Ideally the assessment of the car's worth should be between the advertised price for a similar car and the trade value.

Get examples of adverts for similar cars and go back to your insurer.

That's not what that means, it means that the Ombudsman expects Insurers to arrive at the valuation using the "Retail" value as per the guides eg Glasses, Parkers and Cap.

It's also saying that an advert for a car at a garage is not necessarily it's value but is often the price the trader is willing to start negotiating from

can I ask the op if he intends to replace with another i20 ?

What's the i20 like overall ?

I am thinking of getting one but it has to be three door (which there isn't many of)

We have had an i20 for 2.25 years now (bought it from new) - and it has been fine. Just the two services, no other work. Better ride than our previous Mazda 2 which had 45 profile tyres as standard. The 1.2 is fine for most people - little difference in performance terms between the 1.2 and the 1.4 petrols

My sister bought a new i20 the day before we did, and hers has been fine as well, They've been to Germany and Austria for holidays in theirs - full load of luggage, bike racks, etc. No problems.

All versions aside from the 'Blue' version, have air conditioning. Our Comforts also have bluetooth as standard.

As with any car, try before you buy.

It's a price against which a trader can offer buyers a part-ex value which doesn't sound insulting enough to make them walk away. In other words, more than the car's 'value' - whatever that means.

Which I basically said

"I am thinking of getting one but it has to be three door (which there aren't many of)."

I'm intriged to know why it has to be 3-door. The 5-door versions are more practical as well as more plentiful, and they have child-locks if that's an issue.

The worst thing about 2- or 3-door cars is the wide doors which are such a pain in car park designed 50 or so years ago for narrower cars than today's.

Hyundai i20 - Write off settlement - diddy1234

Only because I think the car looks better for it, less people to carry about and only on average £500 more expensive to buy

The five door is more practical and I test drove a 5 door version 1.2l a few weeks ago.

very quiet for a 1.2l but then I am currently driving a 1.5l CRDI Rio
