Hi, still driving this car but recently and all of a sudden my front door will not unlock. I can always open it from the inside.

what i don't understand is that sometimes it unlocks and locks and sometimes not. i have read the forum here about a broken spring and i'ive tried WD40 and even bought a graphite lube spray from maplins which i squirted into the keyhole. it doesn't seem to be the cylinder and i tried starting to use my other key which has been put in the draw at home for years. i wonder what i could do. i have taken the inside door cover off but the latch is all a sealed unit...seems a bit difficult... all done......opened up the latch, luckily it only had a plastic cover and i didnt have to go into the mechanism too much. It was a broken spring which kept a component arm in the upright position under tension in order to open the door from the outside handle (and turn the key!!! ) if it had been one of the other bigger springs.i would have needed a new latch!

Nothing wrong with the key cylinder.....

Recently had winter tyres fitted to my 2011 Passat Estate 2.0 TDI, but have received conflicting messages regarding recommended tyre pressures. The original summer tyres were 235/45/ZR17, with recommended pressures of 38 psi. New winter tyres are Bridgestone Blizzack 205/55/16BR9HX. VW dealer set them at 30 psi, which seemed a bit low. I contacted VW technical services who replied "same as summer prerssures". Not satisfied, I spoke to Bridgestone who looked up their charts and said 33 psi. I have therefore followed Bridgestone's advice at the moment, but would welcome any comments/suggestions.

I have just purchased a 9 year old Rover. It is in immaculate condition. Not a sign of rust anywhere. I live high on the clifftops in Cornwall and think that undersealing the car is a good idea. How do I proceed and expected cost of? Read more

I have a 2litre 110 HDi Diesel 2004 model and I have had 2 instances of the steering being UNassisted, ie manual and very hard to steer.

First time was during a 1 hour of stop/start driving while in a queue and switching off the engine when stationary. After a few more starts & stops it came back to powered steering. This was 8 months ago. There were no dashboard warnings, everything else normal. Everything OK till now, 8 months later.... Read more

There seem to be various rumours floating around that Honda will soon be announcing that it will no longer supply the Accord in the UK. The reason given is that they are not profitable to sell as they are still brought in from Japan, whereas the emphasis is shifting to the UK manufactured models.

It would be a great shame in my opinion if this happened and would leave a gap in the Honda model range.... Read more

car buyers gradually traded down to a smaller but better value "D"(which had by then grown to the size of an "E"!)

This is something I have noticed over the last 20 years or so, Small cars are getting bigger. If you look at an original Vauxhall Nova and you look at todays Corsa it has grown to the size of an Original Astra (If not a little bigger)....

Just obtained a Type 110 (78AH) (700+A crank) silver calcium battery replacement. How do you remove the old one? In this model, the battery is fitted with one half of its length tucked under the bottom of the wiper / vent panel, adjacent to the front LHS suspension dome, longitudinally, front to back. The 110 case battery is huge for this size of vehicle and is normally found in high-end, high-capacity large vehicles. The Type 075 case, used in petrol models simply tilts up at the front end and lifts out, but it doesn't look possible with a battery this long. None of the usual sources seem to cover this problem. So do I have to start stripping out under-bonnet components to allow this battery to be removed or is there some different procedure for this vehicle? Any guidance appreciated, please? Read more

A type 110 battery is too big in size for this car .I would think you need an 096 or similar.Removal of the battery is not too difficult and is often easier if you unbolt the earth lead from the strut earth point rather than the battery itself.hth

I would appreciate comments from any experts on an on-going issue with an Emission Warning Light on my 1.6 petrol SX4. It is five years old and I have covered 106,000 miles. The vehicle has been excellent and the only issue has been a throttle position sensor going on the blink that I had replaced. Over the past nine months I have had the EWL come on, the vehicle runs normally with no issues at all. The dealer said that this sometimes happens with an intermittent event and the light will go out after a while. This did happen on thefirst event but after a time it came on again. After a service the dealer reset the EWL and the vehicle ran as normal and passed the MOT. The light came on again recently and I took it in to be reset as I had noticed that the earthing cable from the front of the engine to the body had corroded through completely and I wanted this replaced. I suspect the cable was damaged when a new body part was fitted after someone bumped me when I braked and they didn't. The vehicle now runs normally with the light out. When the dealer ran the diagnostics the fault showed a catalytic converter problem, but I am sure this code could mean expensive part replacements that may not actually fix the reported problem. My obvious plan is just to carry on until the vehicle actually fails a MOT emission test, but my instinct tells me this looks like a software glitch of some type in the engine management system rather than a component failure, and could a failed earth have any effect on a reading? Any comments most welcome. Many thanks. Read more

Hi, 10 days ago I took my vauxsall corsa into my local main dealer in Birkenhead. I had a full service, engine flush and coolant flush. Last week it broke down and the dealer have told me the engine has burnt out, due to a faulty waterpump which has caused the engine to overheat. The car had no problems 10days ago before they did this work and now I'm left with a bill for a new engine? Can u give me any advise?   Read more

I would think you have a good claim against the garage if all the facts are as you say, I would first contact the garage and see what they say or are prepared to do as far as costs are concerned .
