I would appreciate comments from any experts on an on-going issue with an Emission Warning Light on my 1.6 petrol SX4. It is five years old and I have covered 106,000 miles. The vehicle has been excellent and the only issue has been a throttle position sensor going on the blink that I had replaced. Over the past nine months I have had the EWL come on, the vehicle runs normally with no issues at all. The dealer said that this sometimes happens with an intermittent event and the light will go out after a while. This did happen on thefirst event but after a time it came on again. After a service the dealer reset the EWL and the vehicle ran as normal and passed the MOT. The light came on again recently and I took it in to be reset as I had noticed that the earthing cable from the front of the engine to the body had corroded through completely and I wanted this replaced. I suspect the cable was damaged when a new body part was fitted after someone bumped me when I braked and they didn't. The vehicle now runs normally with the light out. When the dealer ran the diagnostics the fault showed a catalytic converter problem, but I am sure this code could mean expensive part replacements that may not actually fix the reported problem. My obvious plan is just to carry on until the vehicle actually fails a MOT emission test, but my instinct tells me this looks like a software glitch of some type in the engine management system rather than a component failure, and could a failed earth have any effect on a reading? Any comments most welcome. Many thanks.
