While cleaning the engine of my 504, I re-open a leak which was there for many years. At lest 13, the time I have own the car. The last owner must had it fixed by putting some paint. The leak is at the bottom of the power steering column. It is not a seal problem. It's a metal pipe which is tight up by a nut, but the flange must been broken off, therefore the paint had been applied to seal it.... Read more

As far as I know, you will need a VIC check and an MOT to get your logbook back.
(the insurer gets the MOT and logbook when they pay out???)
When parked outside overnight and the air temperature drops to freezing . . . the engine refuses to start.

I have my doubts about taking the reliability ratings for the face value. The top rated car in Reliability Index is Kia Picanto and the "popular" reliable car VW golf is at 97. At first it looked like people's perception is not acually reality. On closer inspection I can see some interesting flaws in the ratings. The average mileage of Kia is 26000, but VW's is 60000. The chances for a high mileage car going to garage is much higher. Say, they took that into consideration in their "index" calculation. But, I did not see seperate ratings for different versions of the same model. I don't think Kia picanto has an option for a high power engine(even if it is there I doubt if people buy it). The Golf have some pretty powerful engines and sport suspensions in some versions(for which there are many takes I presume). Surely these top end cars risk more garage time considering how these car is going to be used. This can affect the Golf's rating as a whole which is not fair.
In certain cases the reliability ratings can act as a guide I suppose. But the ratings can be far from truth unless someone tell me my assumptions about how they rate is wrong. Read more
They're flawed because the data is collected only from those who have a warranty.
They are also flawed because much data comes from heavy use high mileage newish car drivers, who tend to have cars suitable for this sort of life. Their mechanics are often finely tweaked for ultimate economy in the first few years rather than longevity/durability....

I went to start my Rover 45 yesterday and it wouldnt start, just a clicking sound as i turned the ignition. This happened about 7 months ago and i bought a brand new battery. This time i got a jump start and it started immediatly. I drove down the road for about ten minutes to try and get the battery charged up and noticed when revving the battery light flicked on and flicked off just momentarily. Then as i drove down the road the electronic odometer started blinking and went off and then srs and abs warning lights flciked on and off and odometer flicked on and off and then suddently power steering went and car completly lost power. Went to restart it to move it to safer location and just clicking sound again.... Read more
When you get the car started put a volt meter across the battery terminals with the engine running. The voltage should be between about 14 and 14.4 volts, any more or less and the alternator is fecked. Easy to fit and cheap to buy.
