We bought a 2008 range rover sport hse in Sept.
we were told it had 2 owners- we've now found its had 5!
How are our rights affected and what affect will this have on the cars value?

That would be Misrepresentation.
Did you buy it from a Range Rover dealer, a used car dealer or privately? And do you still have a copy of the ad/description which says 2 owners?
Did you not check the V5 before buying?

You should always get your own HPi type report, Autotrader not bad for this, you can get a full one for £20 or 5 for £25 (over 60 days) which is useful when considering buying one of several cars, not too late to get an HPi anyway from a reputable company and see whats really in the past.
Entirely possible that the vehicle had two private plates in that time which will be clearly stated on report, which could in theory look like 4 owners on the registration document.
those el cheapo text message car checks @ pennies should not be compared to a proper printable report.
2 previous owners is not the same as 2 owners, some of these sale wordings have to be carefully scrutinised, i always look for what they don't say thats often the most important.

Changing the registration number doesn't alter the number of previous keepers on the V5C - mine still says "No previous keepers" despite have been run for 15 months on it's original registration before I put a cherished number on it.

It as bought from the Infiniti garage, which specialises in premium cars as well as Infiniti.
They have admitted they made a mistake and have offered £1000 back, but I feel 5 owners in 4 years is just too much- we paid market value for the car.
The v5 was sent on after- when I applied to transfer my private plate is when I got the full v5 back.
I still have a copy of the ad- at the moment they're not disputing.....
Reality is if we'd known it had had 5 owners we would never have bought it.
Any advice would be much appreciated

Go for a rejection based on a misrepresentation. Infiniti are trying to emulate Lexus, lets see if they are up there with them in terms of customer satisfaction.

Sounds sensible - but the OP needs to make an allowance for the use he's actually had.

Having offered £1000 and therefore admitted mistake I think they will accept rejection, based on the fact that you would not have bought it but for their mistake.
5 owners in 4 years would make me very suspicious too.
As for the use you've had since September, that's their problem, but be prepared to negotiate if it comes up.

Do the names and addresses matter, he wants his money back not to be sending the 5 previous owners Christmas cards.

If he had asked to see the V5C prior to purchase he would see the last two owners, then it's a bit of detective work to find a phone number. Old bills are a good way to start, I find.
But to get all 5, yes it's a DVLA thing

Presumably you've now had the car long enough to work out if it is an OK car or not. If it is a decent car, and you plan to keep it for a while, then keep it as the value when you dispose of it in a few years time will hardly be effected at all by then and have a holiday with the £1000.
These sorts of cars often have a numer of owners - they are, when new, a fashion statement and the first couple of owners typically keep them for 1-2 years max before chopping them in for whatever the latest model is. Add in a dealer demo and a name change to get a V5 by a dealer after a prvate plate change and it is easy to hit 5 keepers.

New brake pads and discs (car sold with pads at 24 instead of legal 27)
4 new wheels (car had 3 buckled wheels)
New bushes
Will have a new differential
I love the car- Infiniti and warranty co picking up the bill for everything listed, but we have been advised that the car should never have gone out like this!
Inspection prior to sale my a**e!
So here's my predicament. Independent inspector described the car as a "pup", and I figure if all these things are put right the cars probably worth having, but the owners thing.......
Am I bring mad because I love the car?

Sounds like some serious off-roading has taken place in this car.
Press for rejection and refund, then go buy another one.

Also sounds like a car waiting to fail you at every opportunity - hence five owners in four years. There is only one reason why people sell the same car so quickly after purchase -it's a dog.

If you keep it 4 years, then decide to sell it, it will be 8 years old (and obsolete, replaced by a new version in 2014), so not worth a lot, so by taking £1000 you'll probably have made on the deal long-term.
