Recent experience, and several others I have read about recently, shows me that electronic diagnistics is not always accurate or reliable and you end up paying for expensive electronic units that are not needed.
A long standing problem led to several visits to the main dealer who diagnosed 3 faults before cured, paying out hundreds each time, and only after insisting on dealing direct with the electical technician was the problem solved.
Expensive electronic components were replaced each time, none of which were returned to me, before the fault was isolated.
The car on each occasion was left without limit of time as it was of no use to us with the fault present.
No offer was made to revert back to the old good parts, or even find them - it was obvious there was no attempt made to keep them or test them off the vehicle.
I am now out several hundred pounds on top of having to find more to replace the real culpret - an entertainment unit.
Invariably I am told that their diagnosicts is fool-proof and the parts were not replaced in vein, but common sense tells one otherwise.
Am I within my rights to insist on the return of these old good components, failing which I receive some form of compensation?
I am considering court action as I feel the onus is on the dealership to prove the parts replaced were defective, to return them or to come up with the evidence or a refund?
I think I should let a judge decide, am I in the right or not?
I think mis-diagnosis on modern cars is a real consumer problem, as I think many parts are being replaced unnecessarily - it's only in cases such as mine, were the real problem still exists after replacement , and the fault is intermitent, that you find this out.
Opinions please.

have one of these. Timing chain went 3 months out of warranty, with 25 k miles on the car. £1000 repair. Peugeot wouldnt offer a penny in help, and took 2 weeks to reply (over a week over their own deadline for responding to my query). I would never touch another peugeot, ever. Read more
Is this the THP "Prince" engine rated at 150 Bhp? Awards coming out its ears.
There have been some incidents of timing chain failure but your dealer seems to have been very unhelpful. Trouble is, this is a six / seven year old car and unless you have documented fsh it will be very hard to twist Peugeot's arm.
My view is that this is another case where long oil change intervals don't help at all. I think that a number of cases on MINIs were down to the chain tensioner not getting enough oil. Not saying this is the case here, for all I know you may have changed oil and filters every 3000 miles!
The vociferous minority posting on the various forums will lead some to conclude that all of these engines destroy themselves at low mileages but actually they are great. Sorry, that doesn't really help you, but worth reminding your Peugeot dealer that while this is not common it is far from unknown.
Starts ok when cold but intermittent problem when restarting - sometimes no response when turning ignition key. Rocking the vehicle in park or drive sometimes seems to solve the problem but there seems to be no obvious reason for this to work on an auto gearbox. Other times leaving it for a short period and its ok again. Read more
Could be the starter motor suffering from heat, which engine does the vehicle have?
Hi,
I have been researching through this website, trying to find a car that would best suit my needs but I now have information overload.... Read more
Go to a car supermarket such as CarGiant and buy a three year old KIA Cee'd, a fairly roomy, totally reliable car, it'll cost you about six grand and it will still have 4-5 years of the manufacturer's warranty left. www.cargiant.co.uk/KIA/results-KIA.asp
Year on Year our new cars are becoming more complex, is it necessary? We can't do home repairs, we can't even swap electrical parts anymore as they have to be 'coded' by the dealers. Many even main dealers struggle to identify parts that are faulty as code readers can flag up wrong diagnosis so 'technicians' (not mechanis anymore) just swap out parts until a fix is achieved they don't put back the parts that were fine so we pay for all the replacements & perfectly good parts go in the bin. Electronic chips have a notoriously short life so cars at 10 years old often can't be repaired, I've been amazed at the number of fairly recent Mercs seen in scrapyards 'can't be economically repaired mate' or can't get bits. Crazy. Me I won't buy anything later than 1999 & even then I'm choosy I prefer a good Classic car from an earlier time, many now have excellent spares availability, easy to fix at a sensible price & with modern oils & better machine shops they can last much longer than original builds, not so economical but cheaper maintenance offsets this especially as we seem to be doing less miles these days. Todays cars are very unlikely to ever become classics & most by the time they are 6-7 years old are not worth a light. Worst investment you can make? Read more
I decided that my carb with just such a heat mass operated auto bulb could do with a 'tune up'. How complicated can it be? One look at the Haynes manual (they were good back then!) was enough to tell me that this was no simple Lawnmower carb. Three separate circuits. Toyota wisely blanked off the mixture adjustment screw to stop amateurs fiddling.
Fasted engine to start from cold I've ever seen. But yup, 35mpg on a good day, and an exhaust pipe that had more soot than a diesel.
Car started occasionaly juddering at 70mph 2000 revs on an incline. This week ecu light came on put car in limp home mode. Took it to garage who diagnosed fuel pressure low with their plug in device. However when checked the fuel pressure was reading ok. Took it on a run and went no problems. Ran ok for a week and now ECU light back on with same diagnosis reset again but when took it out on a run this time when on an incline car cuts out. ? cause. Would changing diesel fuel filter make any difference or could it be the fuel pump? Read more
TBH guys Treezy did ask whether changing the diesel filter would help so i think that gave the game away that its a diesel ?
hi,
My car was parked on the road and a car hit it and did not stop. A passerby witnessed this and left a note on my car with the car registration number and a brief description of what happened. The witness did not leave their details. I reported this to the police and they said they will not be taking it further because of the evidence provided and the minor damage to my car.... Read more
Hi nic,
I've just gone through an almost identical experience to yours .
To explain , I was in a local supermarket car park ,I saw a driver of a skoda collide with the rear of my mother in laws Suzuki . Her car was unoccupied at the time .
The other driver attempted to drive away ,I insisted that she stopped and she reluctantly gave me her name and address . However she then refused to report the incident to her insurance company ,saying that no accident occurred .
We had the Suzuki repaired at a cost of £800 , under a comprehensive policy .We then waited for the insurance companies to sort it out .After 6 weeks and numerous conversations ,I told our insurance company that if it wasn't sorted out in 10 days I would pursue the other driver , not her insurance company , through the small claims court .We were paid in 7 days by the other drivers insurance company .
To summarise find out how much it will cost to have your car repaired ,if its more than £500 ,it's worth pursuing .
First look on the mib website ,to see if the other driver is insured ,if not report report them to the dvla and the police .
If they are insured ,have your insurance company ,contact thier insurance ,if they won't admit liability ,sue the driver through the SMC ,it's a simple process ,the cost to you ,which you should recover is about £200 .
Good luck ,please let the forum know the outcome .

I had my front shock absorbers and console bushes aka wishbones (both sides) replaced just over a month ago.
Since having it back, there seems to be this ticking noise when I'm turning the steering wheel left or right or reversing and steering.... Read more
Take it back to the garage that did the repair and get them to sort it.
