For the past 12 months or so the heating system in my daughter's Audi (2002) has not been working, basically only cold air blowing out. She recently decided to have this fixed. On removing the thermostat, it was found that it needed replacing, a new one was put in, however the car then began to overheat. The water pump was then checked and it was found that some of the blades were broken off. We put the thermostat in hot water to see if it would open, it didn't (could be a faulty one?) My daughter is, for the time being running the car without the thermostat.

I have read that there could be parts of the blades somewhere in the car, i.e. hoses ? If so how can these be removed, also where else could these bits be. Is it possible that this can clear itself and if not, what would be the next thing to do. We also have to think of the financial side of it.... Read more

Running the car without a thermostat can cause severe over cooling which makes the engines computer over fuel the engine and this may permanently damage the catalyst and lambda sensor(s).

Hi everyone

First let me say that I am not in any way shape or form mechanical orientated and I'm looking for advice on my problem as maybe the mechanic is taking advantage of my ignorance.

So I own a Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DT 52Reg with 77000 on the clock, and a while ago started having this problem...the van surges as if there is a block in fuel, revs get up to 3500 in each gear but wont go any further. When pulling away in 1st gear it struggles for a while until the engines sort of ''kicks in''.

Took it to the mechanic, had it tuned up and serviced, redex fuel treatment in diesel done, also the EGR valve was replaced as apparently was full of carbon.

Mechanic says that 2 of the glow plugs are not working but there is nothing that can be done about that because if he tried to fix them it could do even more damage??

Please someone out there give me some advice, as I am seriously starting to doubt this guy but I don't really know any trustworthy mechanics in my area and the local Vauxhall garage has gone bust. I just don't want to go into a garage and get ripped off if they realize I don't understand nothing about mechanics.

Many thanks.

Suggest you find a diesel specialist garage, e.g: a Bosch-certified garage, as they might have knowledge of model-specific issues.

The symptoms are similar to others on the forum, but not exactly the same.

Could well be fuel starvation.I would start by replacing the fuel filter. Not uncommon for these to reduce fuel flow.hth

Your advice spot on. I asked dealer to comment and he agreed. He replaced the filter and all is well - brilliant! Top marks to Fred Coupe of Preston - honest advice, changed filter while I waited. Many thanks!

I have recently had the car serviced and a new timing belt fitted.

Aftter a short journey or when hot car refused to start. It will fire/turn over but will not pick up. An orange light was showing which suggested a coolant sensor was causing the problem but the garage have told me it has been tedted but not replaces. Would appreciate some advice, thanks Read more

coolant sensors very prone to failing but often just default to a generic setting as a way of getting you home !

So if the garage read live data for coolant sensor it may appear tpo give a reading....

Hi all,

I bought a second hand Focus and it's been okay, a few niggles (squeaking on start, etc) but nothing major so far - however, I have noticed the door interior on the two rear doors is coming away (it seems to bow outwards) - I took some snaps (plus.google.com/photos/116140117376556730862/album...E) apologies for quality, but wondered if there was a quick fix or this was a known problem? ... We are looking for a second hand family car which will suit us as our family (hopefully) grows in future from our current one baby to two! Our car has been written off after an accident so we don't have the luxury of a lot of time to shop around and we don't really know anything about cars unfortunately so I hope someone can advise please!

Our Requirements would be:... Read more

Thanks everyone so much for your comments. We looked at a lot of these options and are slowly narrowing down options. We loved a 2008 Berlingo multispace (after I vowed I'd never like it!) but just too far out of price range. I'm now swayed by a Honda FR V. I think I will start a new thread with some specific questions on the Honda. Of course I may be back - this search could run and run unfortunately as we have a small baby and my husband works late so only getting the chance to look on weekends! Thanks again.

Within 10 years, in car cameras will be common. Have a website where people can upload any instances of bad/dangerous driving. The police could then study them at a desk and take action if it was required. I know there may be issues with proving who was driving, however, those issues exist now so the law needs to change in that respect.
