Radio 2's homwork query today at 6.45pm was 'at what speed would a car cover a set distance using the least fuel?'
The answer was rather flimsy, but apparently 52-56 mph [ignoring all the car variables etc]. Most time was spent waffling on about making sure the boot was empty and so forth.... Read more
Quote:..... (re hybrids) ""It's long, flat bits that they're rubbish at. There's some jiggery-pokery involving fiddling with revs ("energy recycling") which attempts to alleviate this, but it's not what they're cut out for.""
Depends on the type of hybrid. For the type where electric and mechanical drive is combined, surely a direct mechanical drive for cruising on motorways would be a good idea - either selectable or engaged automatically. Perhaps some hybrids have this, I don't know.
hi all. sometimes when i turn the key i get total silence, all the lights are on the dashboard but the car doesn't even turn over, not even a cough. i will try to start it between 4 and 10 times then suddenly it will turn over and start. is this a starter motor problem?? there's not even a click when i turn the key and then suddenly after several tries it will fire up?? I have to say I actually quite like the Bentley in camouflage.
I wonder what one in plain olive drab would look like?

The full service history amounted to just 2 stamps in the service book and no bills/invoices whatsoever. I wish people would think about what they are writing in adverts to save wasting vendor and prospective buyer time. Read more
Actually he did 'buy' a Mini, I checked. That purchase fell through because the car was not as described.
I bought a 6 month old Golf 6 months ago, the garage has contacted me offering a new Golf, same model/engine for same monthly payments, the balloon payment is a little higher (1500) and 2 extra monthly payments making the difference about 2K. They explain this because of a much lower interest rate of the loan.
I know there is a new model due in Jan 2013, is this the reason they are pushing this deal? Read more
Do you mean the balloon payment (at the end of the contact)is £100 higher or that the deposit is £1500 at the beginning? If it's the balloon payment, they aren't asking you for cash up front. and the deal is worth a look. If they want cash now, I can't see the point of your changing cars.
A friend of mine is a 760 enthusiast, he's on his third, an '00MY model. He's looking to change it for a later one and spotted what the ad says is an '06 760Li in his preferred colours/trim and with his preferred options.
However alarm bells rang because the dealer selling it is asking for circa £30K. Market value for such a car is circa £18K even with the very low mileage of 14K.... Read more

I'd endorse the point above about the engine 'K' light. - orange light in dash with pictogram of injection system. MY 110/HDi Xantia has had it's share of induction plumbing problems. Various bits of the pipework can split and create warnings or problems such as excess smoke/poor power curve.
The acceleration test above is most revealing. In mine it's unpredictable but usually results in a 'gag' and illumination of the K -light but not limp mode. I just live with it but it would be useful for negotiation on a sale....
I am involved in a dispute over a second hand car and am taking the dealer to court early next year. I have just received the defendant's evidence which includes a previously undisclosed vehicle inspection report made by a garage. I have very strong circumstantial evidence to suspect that this is fraudulent and backdated. I don't know if the garage is working with the dealer but suspect they might be. I have been to the court, the police and trading standards and they all agree that the document looks suspicious but no one will help. Apparently the only way I can prove the document is not legitimate is to find out if a VAT receipt was issued for the work at the time it was allegedly undertaken. I have no rights to ask to see the garage's VAT receipts. What can I do?
Thanks ... Read more
Thanks for all your replies. I am going to confront the garage and see what happens. I will keep you posted on events.
