Random thought I had today, one thing I notice with the way most people drive turbo diesels is revving the nuts off the thing as if it was a petrol, rather than letting the torque do the work. (Short shifting)

Any one else noticed this? Read more

I have got a slight smoke problem coming from behind the engine and is getting into the car. Have checked the exhaust system and all is ok.

Smoke appears to be coming up from the rear of the rocker cover by the air filter. I think that the smoke is oil related (rather than diesel / exhaust). Looking at the engine I cant see where its coming out of and there's no evidence (that I can see) of oil on the block (either front or back of engine - but hard to see back).... Read more

Remember that the EGR valve is bolted to the rear of the cylinder head. Could this be leaking exhaust gasses?

Hi,

I need some legal advice. I saw a Ford Focus which was a category D write off. In my opinion, it looked of good quality, low mileage and at a good cost (8000 miles, 1 owner and I year old). The dealer said that he had 5 people interested in it and not wanting to lose it I paid a initial £300 deposit.... Read more

also the gist,( in my view )consistent with the line I took, that in contract law a penalty is unsustainable.)

Again .A retention of a deposit is not a penalty ,you agree to pay a deposit as part of a clear contract that you willingly sign ,if you attempt to vary or cancel that contract you loose your deposit .
Trading standards say the above is correct as do the citizens advice bureau whose opinion you introduced .

You then say (in my view ).How can you seriously offer your unsubstantiated opinion as a counter argument to written information from these two authorities .
If you want to persist in the idea that a penalty is involved ,make the effort ,find a written opinion ,other than your own ,that confirms your point .

My car engine was swamped on a flooded road. My car insurers have agreed to pay for a new engine. The Mercedes authorised repairer wants to replace as a matter of course the catalytic converter, the intercooler and turbo unit. The engineer appointed by the insurers says this is not necessary. Should I insist these components are replaced on the basis of likelihood of damage (as the repair garage says) ? I am particularly concerned about the catalytic converter as a considerable amount of water drained from the exhaust when the car was winched onto the breakdown truck. Read more

In an ideal world you should replace everything but the insurers aren't going to wear that, it's unlikely that water in the engine will have damaged the turbo or intercooler and the cat will quickly recover as it gets red hot within seconds of engine starting, any moisture will be burned off, remember water is a product of the combustion process anyway, you'll see it in the form of steam or water drips from the tailpipe on a cold day.

I'm in the process of fitting a replacement turbo on my vehicle, and will be replacing the oil feed pipe and the union bolt on the cylinder block end of the same. The new genuine Peugeot bolt is of a different design to the old one; was supplied by a Peugeot dealer and identified from a parts list e mailed to me.

The old one had a nylon tubular filter fitted inside it and there isn't one with the new part; or any illustration of the filter in the parts list sent to me. I assume the new bolt design doesn't require a filter, although I wondered whether the filter also regulated the oil flow to the turbo, to maintain oil gallery pressure for the remainder of the engine.... I get the warning light for particulate filter blocked coming once every week or so and it seems that I need to refill the additive. Looking at my Haynes manual, vehicules manufactured from Nov 2002 require EOLYS 176. My car is a 03 reg, first registered in june 2003. I guess I will have to check with a Peugeot dealer if it was really manufactured after nov2002 otherwise it would need the EOLYS DPX42.

The car is a 307 2.0HDi 110bhp... Read more
