Hi, I have a 2002 1.6 16v astra and it won't start! I have been told its the ecu/immobiliser playing up. I haven't got any fault codes I can pass on but I know it could be a hundred and one different things but question is......

Is it worth buying a 2nd hand kit off eBay or similar that consists of the ecu, the transponder ring thingy and a key chip?

Many thanks in advance and a great website!!! Read more

Due to the Brittany Ferries dispute, a week or so ago we found oursleves travelling back to Oxfordshire from Dover late at night via the M25 etc.

Virtually all the roads has flashing speed restrictions and dire warning of lane closures and admonitions that there was WORKFORCE IN ROAD. Each time after about four or five miles of this, we passed a solitary lorry with a bored person unloading cones. We never actually saw anybody doing anything.... Read more

I just wish I had had the forethought years ago to invest heavily in Cones (UK) Ltd. I'd have made a killing.

Suddenly at 128k miles, I could not move from 6th to 5th. It's as if the gear is not there to be found - as if blanked off. I can do it by quickly moving gear lever to neutral and then touch 4th and then it's smooth into 5th. 4th to 5th works as smoothly as ever. With engine idling, I can get all gears smoothly. I did have temporary difficulty in selecting reverse about 3k ago - but that's fine at the moment. Local Ford garage suggests removing gearbox to investigate because has no experience of similar difficulties. Do you know someone I could ask? many thanks Read more

I shall be visiting a part of the country very much unknown to me. I am travelling from the North East to the Ludlow area in Shropshire. Looking at the map the obvious route is M1, M42. A448 through Kidderminster. An aquaitance said the Kidderminster through to Bewdley was a bit of trial and suggested using the M62 then A49. That too looks a fairly direct route. My main question is this; on a Saturday morning would route 1 be quicker or easier than route 2. Any advice from frequent travellers on these routes would be welcome. Cheers Concrete Read more

The 8.43 from Newcastle will get you to Ludlow for 1.16 with a change at Manchester - dead easy and no traffic hold-ups - and you can use your mobile phone without getting 3 points!

Fair point, went to Glasgow last week via train and it was great. However SWMBO is not one to travel light and we intend to make day trips while in the Ludlow area. I will be relaxed and driving as such because I will be on holiday but I am always wary of the camera stasi, especially in uncharted territory. Thanks to all for the comments, very welcome. I must go now; I may be some time!! Cheers Concrete

Cold - nah. Wet - yes, torrential downpour returning from hospital visiting. Still worth it for the free parking!.

I don't have access to the trade lists, but some of the web engines get close from what I understand....

My Zafira won't start, starter motor doesn't click. The dashboard display, windows and interior lights are working but there are no ignition lights coming on at all. The headlaights are coming on as I turn the key but they are switched off. What could the problem be?? Read more

We've had our Pluriel since new (5 years old now) and it's never leaked a drop until now. It'sjust hd its 40,000 mile service by the dealer we bought it from (Yeomans off Torquay) and they have changed the pollen filter for the first time. Could this be what the problem is? Please advise me on how I go back to the garage as I am exteremely fed up about this. Many thanks. Christopher Biggs

There is heavy black/blue smoke from the exhaust on start-up from cold which disapears when normal running temp is reached.

Also the auto box is very clunky on accelerating and it does not chang gear when costing down hill Read more
