Recently bought a used car, noticed at the garage that the idle was very lumpy and the rad was leaking but other than that seemed ok, got it home and about a week later a problem has risen its very ugly and frustrating head !! The first start of the day when cold is really hard, almost to the point of killing the battery cranking it over!

When turning the key it cranks over but does not seem to want to fire, eventually it does but only just !

Had a new radiator fitted first to cure the leak although I know this is nothing to do with this issue, just trying to give all the history I know

Thought maybe it was it not getting enough air, so the air intakee valve was stripped and cleaned and replaced with a new air filter at that point

Still didn't seem to want to fire, so full set of new plugs were put in, coil pack has been replaced also

Oil filter and oil changed

Checked fuel pressure, the rail is primed and there is loads of fuel pressure so didn't appear to be a fuel supply issue

Took it to a garage, had diagnostics done, ecu reported a faulty crank shaft sensor, replaced this, made no difference (although it has cured the rough idle when it is running)

Battery is good, in fact cranked it over with battery attached to a second huge battery at same time and still same issue, so don't think it can be any issue there!

At a loss as to what to try next ?? Can anyone advise ? Read more

RE your Zafira starting problem, we have the same problem! Did you have and luck sorting your car out?

Many thanks...

I have a 2 year old Skoda Yeti 1.2TSI DSG with 10,500 miles on the clock - mainly on rural roads.

Recently the car has started to feel (what I can best describe as) "bouncy and twitchy/skittish" but with neither steering judder or other sensation nor straight line deviation even under braking - and less noticeable on motorways.... Read more

The van was in reverse, stalled and then refused to go again. No fault codes show. Diesel is sucked into the tank via the pump, but none delivered to the business part of things. Any ideas?

Thank you,... Read more

I've been on these forums reading and even asking for advice. I was considering the Kia Rio 1 for a long time but decided to wait and start ordering a new car in October. As it is October now I am glad I have waited since the Paris Auto Show revealed an interesting car, Dacia Sandero!

This car is interesting because for the same price of a Kia Rio 1 (£10,500 internet prices) you can get a top-spec version of a Dacia which means more equipment and "upmarket" options available for example you can choose to have an in-built sat nav, DVD Screen in rear seats (which i've only ever seen on "premium" cars before)... Read the previous postings they will all change in March 2013.

The standard of trim is completely different in Brasil.

Just having a read of the HJ review of the new Mazda 6. I'd have another 6 - don't really care for the 19" wheel option and it's disappointing that they're not doing a hatchback but it is a good looking car, and they've souped it up a bit whilst lowering the VED.

I don't see the point of comparing it to a BMW though; to my mind it's not pointing at the same market. I usually see families using them rather than them being repmobiles. Read more

Perhaps I'm in a minority, but personally I'm not keen on the looks of the new estate. Seems to be that there is too much metal and too little glass behing the C pillar, in common with many recent estates, although I think the latest Hyundai i30/Kia cee'd estates look good. Must feel pretty dark inside.

Apart from that, the economy of the petrol engines looks impressive on paper which is good news.

My first car was a Vauxhall Viva HB. My driving instructor somehow got me through the test and sent me to see her husband who worked for the local dealers. £400 and I was away, can't remember being hammered for insurance but had had motorbikes for a while so perhaps I had some no claims. Bet everyone can remeber their first wheels.

Mine was a 1953 Ford Anglia. I won £265 on the football pools in 1962 and lashed out £150 on this car on my Dad's advice. He was a big Ford man; I wanted a Morris Minor but he talked me down. The Ford was a rubbish car, actually. 3 speed gear box, no heater, vacuum driven wipers - the faster you drove the slower the wipers operated. Nightmare in a thunderstorm going up Dinas Maywwyd! Nevertheless did me proud for several years and was replaced with a 1957 Morris 1000 which had a heater and proper wipers but, sadly, still semaphore trafficators which stuck, so you had to give the door pillar a bang from time to time. Happy days!

I wasn't going to post on this thread until I read this! My first car was a 1947 Ford Anglia 933 cc side valve two door, bought for £15, complete with the aforementioned gearbox, wipers etc. Known to the family and the then girl friend (who I am still happily married to) as the Black Pig....

Im having an issue with the streeing on my 2.0HDI Xsara VTR. Before i had the issue like to point out that i had worn wheel bearings on the front passanger side that were replaced, then had the wheels reballenced an the tracking redone

The issue is this, when i brake the steering shudders from 40 to 30mph and is fine again, also when the just the left wheel hits a bump or pothole the steering wheel gets a tug but this doesnt happen when the right wheel hits a bump or pothole... Read more

Pulling to one side could indicate worn/soft bushes, get a long bar and lever against the suspension arms looking for excess movement, try the opposite side for comparison.

I have noticed this everytime I go abroad. Yesterday I drove from Rotterdam to Schipol and back. Weather was at time terrible, high crosswinds and torrential downpours. Average speed of 60mph or so.

However, despite this, my 98 Alhambra 1.9tdi returned just shy of 60mpg, and road noise was neglible, and smooth ride.... Read more

I'd be careful of bumping a diesel especially in the cold. They have high compressions and you could break something.

New battery? I tried this with an Astra DTI 2001 but it needed a new starter motor....

I'm looking for a £3,500 car to replace my Mazda 6. I don't drive a huge annual mileage, but most individual journeys are long so I want diesel economy, comfort and reliability. A Ford Mondeo or Focus would be suitable, because I need to carry a bike, and it's fine by me if it already has 80,000-odd miles on the clock.

I have a 2004 Accord Tourer iCTDI that I have had from new. It will be nine years old in March, and, touch wood, it has been problem free. I don't cover enormous mileages on an annual basis, but I don't use it for short journeys. I tow a caravan, so a diesel is more or less a necessity. The diesel engine is quiet, and when driving solo, fully laden, on the French autoroutes I achieve around 54 mpg.

Unfortunately, there won't be a new Accord in the UK for the foreseeable future, so I'll be changing the Accord for a New CR-V iDTEC
