Hey guys,

This may seem like a silly question. The return pipes on my injectors are connected in series. Injector 4 returns to injector 3 which in turn returns to injector 2 etc etc. My question is this, is there an "in" and "out" on the fuel return ports? (each injector has two return ports)... Read more

The return ports on the injectors are both "out" and so can be daisy-chained with rubber tubing. This will give a spare port at one end which should be covered with a blanking cap.

Beware, on PSA vehicles the rubber pipe hardens (so does the cap) and eventually cracks, letting air into the system. This will give rise to poor starting as the transfer pump pulls air....

A conference on Parking for (Private and Council Parking) invited Martin Cutts of the Plain Language Commission to give a speach, bearing in mind Martin has had a few run ins with the Private Parking Industry and especially their trade organisation the BPA his choice was a little odd. They asked for a copy of his speach in advance but he refused and they still allowed him to speak...

Here is a link to his speach, well worth a read especially bearing in mind it was given to an audiance predominantly from the private parking businesses and a couple of BPA executives were seated at the top table having also given speaches. They're going all out for PR at the moment as the law changes later this year giving the BPA a bit of authority...

Hello
I have had my pre reg 61 plate Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.4 TDCI for 3 months (3500miles) and the economy is fine despite the label saying 68.9mpg (107g/km). I am very happy with it and my driving style means that 70ps is more than enough for me! I notice many people on here have cars with this unit and say its underpowered and thirsty lol

I notice in some literature that there is a latest version that is rated at 104g/km which equates to 70.6mpg - not a huge leap and still falls short of the magic tax exempt point.

Cars advertised with such amazing claimed fuel economy do not deliver at all eg the latest 1.6 TDCI econetic that offers 86 mpg and the Kia Rio certinaly does not return 88 either.

I was wondering what improvements does the latest 1.4 version have over mine not that I’m bothered the latest version is going to be replaced again later this year when the revamped version comes up.

I doubt very much it will have stop start and brake regeneration otherwise the claimed figures would be much bigger. I get between 57-61mpg and the engine has yet to be run in.

My current VW 2003 Passat estate provide loads of head rooms to the dogs residing in the boot space (very large breeds), I remember when I bought the car eight years ago or so most estates we looked at had a ‘big tall’ room in the back. As we are looking to get a new estate we noticed that all the current crop of estates got a slopping or slightly slopping roof at the back.

When we tested the A4 avant and the Volvo V60 both of our dogs couldn’t sit upright without touching the hatch glass above them.... Read more

The downside of a near-vertical tailgate is that the aperture is narrower top-to-bottom. Years ago I managed to get a large kettledrum into my Renault 20: it wouldn't fit through the tailgate of a Volvo 240 estate.

But in some cases the stylist has been allowed to have his head too much: rear visibility is compromised as well as space because of the need to look trendy.

I have a 2008 facelift model X-type 2.0D with 89,000 miles. The extended manufacturer's warranty expired a few days ago so I had the car checked out by the main dealer and no faults were found.

I took it for a drive yesterday and I noticed when braking at the end of the road there was a banging noise from the back of the car - almost the sound of something like a worn bush (I had a similar 'tapping on a biscuit tin' like sound from the back of my 1995 XJ6 X300 many years ago). However this noise is not present at all when driving without braking so I guess this must be some issue with the brakes. It is very strange as the car was fine before. The only thing I noticed when reversing the car out the drive was that it felt as though a brake was sticking when I tried to move it. I hadn't used the car for a week or so before and I've had this issue before on my previous 2002 X-type 2.5. ... Read more

My wife has recently bought a new car and has taken out insurance (using her NCB) with a different company from which we used on her old car.We are in the process of selling her old car and having paid for the insurance in a lump sum on the old car presume we are effectively still insured for both cars.Is this the case ? I have heard you cant have two policies or use NCB on different policies ? I suspect if i rang the old cars insurance company there would be some sort of charge which I dont really want to incur on a car that I am hoping to sell soon. Read more

I want to try and save on getting engine oil, oil/air filters and plugs changed. I wanted to find out how I could do that and what tools I would need.

I believe the oil filter is right at the front of the engine behind the radiator and the air filter is to the left side of the engine, however I cannot figure out the way for changing oil. Plus I also could not see where the plugs were and how to get to them.

I would greatly appreciate if I could be advised on the above and tools I would need, as that would save me around £180 every year and change my oil more often without having to spend to much.

Thanks and regards,

Robin the Technician

Hi Abid,

These jobs are fairly easy with a reasonable tool kit. The 406 does have a large plastic engine bay cover theat covers the underside of the sump etc. It has to be removed when you change the oil & filter. You will need a special socket for the sump plug and a good motorist shop will sell you one along with a strap type filter removing tool. A good purchase would be a Haynes manual which will help guide you through these tasks and will be a sound investment for you....
