If its not causing any immediate problems I wouldn't worry about it, its much cheaper to top it up than have something done about it. Some engines do use oil and some don't there may be reasons why but you cant do much about it.

I was driving my Peugeot 306 d turbo home from work the other day and while accelerating up a dual carriageway the car revved too its limiter and puffed out clouds of black smoke then subsequently cut out while doing 70.

I got it to the side of the road and checked i hadn't snapped a timing belt before attempting to restart the engine, after confirming this wasn't the problem i attempted to restart the car which didn't happen so i got it towed home, left it for a few hours and went back to it and it started so i drove it around a few streets by my house to see if the problem still occurred but only when i got it to more than 2500 rpm, which i thought could be the turbo.... There is a little bit too much oil in there but nothing excessive, so are you saying oil deal on the turbo? Cos Ive got a 'new' turbo coming Wednesday on the strength of what I read before posting this siding with my suspicions.

With cars that age/price it's all about condition. It can be worth paying more for a good one as repair bills can way outstrip any savings. Don't forget this is a 12 year old car - many that age are hitting the scrap yards now - It only takes an MOT repair to finish them off (e.g. If the catalyst fails on a Focus it's an expensive repair as sometimes it's part of the exhaust manifold).

However in my opinion the 2.0 petrol of that era was one of best Ford engines.

A few years ago my sister paid well over the top for an old but excellent condition W reg 2.0 Mondeo. Quite a few years later it's still going strong an she has had very few bills (just brake pads/disks & couple of suspension bushes) - Overall - a bargin!

I booked my car into a park & ride car park in order to catch a flight from Luton. On arrival at the car park I was directed by the attendant where to park, then I proceeded to the office to register and deliver my keys. My family and I then boarded the bus provided by the car park to tranport us to the airport. All fine! 2 weeks later, to my amazement I receive a Parking Enforcement Notice from APCOA asking for £40 increasing to £80 after 14 days. The alleged offence was "01 - Failing to park in a designated parking area at Luton Airport on 9th June 2012 at 7.26am" Remarkably the followng day I received another Parking Enforcement Notice (different reference number) This time the alleged offence state "02 - Dropping / Picking Up outside of a designated parking area" the time was exactly the same as alleged offence number 1. This all seems incredible, especially as no-one was "dropped off" and the only parking was where allocated by the staff prior to handing over the car keys. We have challenged this and have asked for proof of these offences and await their reply. Would love to know your opinion on this and where do we stand legally. We paid for our parking fully and did absolutely no wrongdoing, we recieved no parking ticket on the car, in fact we just arrived at the designated area, paid our money and collected our car after our holiday exactly as instructed. The only correspondence I would respond to is official Court papers, ignore everything else. They have sent you speculative invoices under the pretence of them having an official capacity to impose penalty charge notices. These companies do sometimes send fake Court papers stamped DRAFT, these can also be ignored. Alternatvely write to the Chief Exec of Luton Airport and tell him if he doesn't instruct the cowboys to stop chasing you for a debt you deny you will sue him for harrassment.

I agree with daveyjp, unfortunately I think the poster has already contacted the parking outfit, and although not ideal I would write again stating you have no case to answer and inform them that no further correspondence will be entered into. Then ignore the letters they send. Official court papers will not come from them, but from the court itself. These you need to take seriously. From what you say you have an excellent case so stick with it. I am pretty sure it is illegal to send copies of court papers to anyone, when the court has not endorsed the papers. This used to be called the 'blue frightener', but has been stopped I think. If they try this then you can report them to the court, it is serious breach of procedure and they would be in trouble.

It may be worth writing to the CEO of the airport, but I doubt you could sue him for someone else harrassing you. Instead point out that you will think twice before using Luton airport again due to the potential problems involved with car parking. It is in his interests to have this matter and future procedures sorted out....

Hello all.

I’m a long time lurker at this site and now the latest in a long line of people looking for a bit of advice!

My wife has a 2004 Peugeot 307 1.4 HDI which we have owned from 3 months old that has now covered 54k. Knowing now of the reputation of French cars I’m not sure that we would make the same purchase today but, despite being a bit dull to drive, this car has been faultless in the 8 years that we have owned it and other than regular servicing, tyres, brakes and recently an exhaust there have been no unexpected costs.

My dilemma is this. In the last month the car has developed a couple of electrical faults. The water temperature sensor and one of the ABS sensors have started playing up and I have started to consider whether to spend money on this car or look for a replacement.

I’m not sure what I’d be looking at in terms of cost to fix these issues. The car still drives fine and I could live with the water temp one but the ABS fault causes the car to revert to regular servo assisted breaking so needs sorting. I would also look to get the timing belt and probably water pump replaced while the system was drained. In addition, I’m aware that this car has a DPF which relies on chemicals to regenerate which will need attention at some point.

I have around £10k for a replacement and would consider a convertible as the kids are now old enough to climb in and out of a 2 door car but then I keep thinking, the 307 is paid for, costs £30 per year VED, £250 to insure and returns 55 mpg (brim to brim).

I have looked at Audi A4 cabriolets but my £10k will get me a 5 year old car with similar mileage (1.8T). I would go for petrol as the car will only do about 4k miles per year.

Any other suggestions or advice welcome? (also, apologies for the length of the post!).

Cheers,

Rob

You will be better off moneywise hanging on to your Peugeot. Is there a local specialist you could go to for advice? Timing belt and water pump and a brake servo, that ain't going to cast anything like the 10 k you have to fund a new car......bottom line is changing your car starts the whole thing off again...a few months warranty that covers everything except what goes wrong and you are fixing the new car rather than the old one.

My 406 has developed an air-con leak in the pipe between the low pressure valve and compressor. Haynes refer to the pipe as "click on" presumably at the valve end and at the compressor end the connection is referred to as H/PAD. How easy is it to remove this pipe and replace? Are any special tools required? Read more

Can anyone throw me a few pointers? Recently got a cheap P reg Astra 1.6 with the 8v engine. Drives lovely, no smoke, not bad on fuel, but one thing it does when you stop and it idles is shake and make almost a chugging noise. If you go round the back it sounds quite blowy and the chugging is much more noticable. Again, if you open the bonnet you can see the engine wobble much more than normal as it chugs, and like I say the car shakes as well. Just wondered what this could be?

The exhaust is virtually new do the blowy sound isn't related to that I don't think.

Help?

The powers that be have known about the state of the elevated section of the M4 for more than 20 years. What a wonderful advertisement for the country just as we start the biggest sporting event for 50 years. Personall we are not going within 100 miles of london for the next couple of months. Our neighbours have also cancelled their visit, and none of us will use heathrow at all anymore, what a shambles the last few governments has made of our infrastructure. Read more

I recently purchased a Ford 6006E CD Auto-Changer. It had a number of faults (jammed changing mechanism / locked code entry etc.) which I managed to fix. To test it I linked it up to the car, turned it on and everything worked fine.

After this I spent 5 mins puting all the housing and screws back on only to find that when I fitted it a second time to the car, it would not turn on! I disconected the power and reconected... I even disconected the battery, but it still will not come on. There are wee green lights that come on next to where you put in the CDs, so I know it is getting power. I have seen a number of folk in this same predicament, but nobody has managed to provide a solution... anyone have any ideas?... Read more

Check you have not grounded one of the casing screws against a pcb. Remove the casing to your last known position it powered up then work slowly from there forwards.

I can't remember if the case has an insulating paper at the pcb side.
