Hi all,

This is my first post, and im just wondering something......

I have a 2009 (09) 1.6 TDCI.

Ive heard lots of horror stories about the turbos failing on the engine due to the engineering between the hoses, the sump and the turbo (its the same as in the mini, pug hdi, citroen etc ive been told?) From what ive read it seems that they are "garrett" (if ive spelt right) turbos.

However.....

After looking at my engine and turbo, nowhere does it state garrett on the turbo body it just states various numbers.

Also there are marks on the bolt heads and bolt housing, where it looks to me they have been marked for the correct torque settings for when the turbo unit is removed and put back on.....Why would someone do this for a car with 23k on the clock?

Ive taken a photo so you can see, if you give me an email i can send??

Also do the new TDCI units still suffer with this problem of turbo failure, as again when reading i get mixed responces. Some people say yes but only on focus and others say no, it was rectified on the MK7, and then there are people who say yes the turbo fails on all TDCI's

Please help/advice

Cheers

excellent advice.

not only do the fine oil ways inside the turbo foul-up with sludge (or worse) but the hydraulic tappets do too. the Ford oil change interval seems more about making the car appear cheaper to maintain than prudent maintenance. by nature diesels taint the oil with carbon far more than petrols do. 'oil is cheap, engines are expensive' as someone once said....

Had car go into 'limp' mode and dashboard said Engine Systems failure

Took it to Ford dealer - they plugged it in and said fault was Throttle Body Assembly so new one was fitted at cost of £384... Read more

hi
i have a astra g 04 diesel y17dt engine i had the glow plugs replaced now i have fault codes (p0115 engine coolant temperature circuit) (p0180 fuel temperature sensor a circuit) (p0380 glow plug/heater circuit a p0409 exhaust gas recirculation sensor a) the two fans start when the engine starts and go off about 2 minutes after the engine is turned off or when you turn the key to the fourth position this will turn the fans off i have tried a differant coolant control moduel and replaced water temperature sensor and thermostat but still the same fault codes the car starts first time but runs a bit fast and when the engine is warm and you turn it off if you turn it back on before you let it cool for 15min the reves shoot up to 25000 and the fans dont come on and the car just wants to pull away someone said it might be the a/c pressure switch all the faults seem to be connected by circuit"a" could someone explain what circuit"A"is any thoughts would be great
thanks steve

Hi Steve, thanks for replying and all that, it will contribute to the fuzzy internet database and help all those that support these cars.

It does seem to be the electrics that go, must be why taxi drivers don't turn their engines off....

Hello, I am delving the web for some advice. I run a small garage business and would like to be able to compete with the big boys like kwik fit and halfords, so I was wondering if there is some reasonable priced car diagnostic tools that would be able to bring my garage into the 21st Century? I've only joined this site this week I keep reading these posts for dual mass flywheels costing £1000 to replace on the cdti 150 bhp vauxhall diesel lump Well I run a garage in Middlewich Cheshire and I replace these for £495 all day long that's including. New flywheel a new clutch 3 pieces and fitting with a large warranty period. Please get in touch if you need one of these doing it's keeping me in work vauxhall just adds a lot of labour on to these jobs why I don't know takes me 5 hours job done. (self promotion removed.) Sometimes you don't even need the flywheel replaced. Read more

The key fob for my A3 will open four of the five doors, but not the driver's door. It might be unlocking the driver's door but the door cannot be opened with the external handle, only the internal one. The door can be unlocked and opened externally using the key rather than the fob. I suspect that there is an internal link that has become disconnected. Audi, of course, want to replace the locking unit at c.£450. Is there a more economic solution? Read more

Yep balleballe has this right, main dealer is where you go to get new parts fitted till it finally works again, a good VW group indy will probably know exactly what the problem is before he touches the door card, and should be able to repair with a bit of luck.

Get it fixed soon though, if somethings coming loose it might get to the point that the door won't open at all, might mean destroying the door trim card to gain access....

I have an ageing Audi A4 1.9 TDI (03 plate 120,000miles) that has been a great car until a few months ago when it started to idle roughly intermittently. It has not lost power and the fuel consumption has not gone up. It pulls smoothly at all road and engine speeds. My local Audi dealer has fitted a new EGR valve and electronic engine mount but this has not solved the problem and I am now several hundred pounds poorer. They have given up and tell me it will cost "a lot of money" if I want them to look further. There are no faults showing on the diagnostics and the injectors are all working well within spec. They say it may be a DMF issue but that this is unlikely because there are no other symptoms. It does not smoothe out when the clutch is depressed and there are no knocks when pulling away or stopping the engine. They also say it may be the head wiring loom. Either way they say there is no easy way to check these things without significant cost. Can anyone help me get a diagnosis without spending even larger amounts of money? Read more

ive worked vag for 12 years or more now. i would go and buy the injector loom and fit it anyway. they were troublesome on 1.9 8 valve pd engines. about £40 to £50 from vag.

Hi,

Does any one know if the 1.3CDTi engine in the Astra has a DPF? The model I am looking at is the 2006 version and its in tax band D if that makes a difference?

Also is this a good engine? Does it have anything to look out for or is it a steer clear engine like the 1.9CDTi?

Thanks in advance,

They are great little motors. I bought mine as I using it as a work vehicle. Cover 75 miles per day all start stop urban and occasional A roads. Got it rather than the Astra Van as I wanted the seats.

In my work day I do 45-50mpg which is all stop start. Few weeks ago did a 2000 mile round trip camping holiday to France and Germany, up and down mountains with 3 blokes and a boot full of camping gear. No issues with power at all. Yes, there is no torque below 1700 rpm, but on the power band it pulls very weel for a small engine Those who say its dangerous at roundabouts are talking rubbish. The 1.3 has a 6 speed gearbox, so you can easily keep it in the power band. Motorway it cruises great between 60-90mph with no issues. On that 2000 miles managed 58mpg, which was sitting at 80mph most of the time....

I can't believe MB are buying Renault's 1.5 DCI engine. The irony is that MB were in the diesel game before pretty much everyone else. Now, they're going to be sharing engines with Dacia. Read more

Anything, but anything, is better than the boneshaking diesel lump I had in a B200CDI a few years ago. Yes, even a Perkins Prima - just as noisy but without the shudderingly low idle speed that Mercedes said couldn't be adjusted.

Somewhat off topic but I do feel compelled to add that Astras of this age also have dodgy electrics, in that the starter motors, alternators, and wiper motors fail early.

I'm not going to say it's a Vauxhall thing, as it only affects certain models and certain components as far as I can tell....
