Ford Focus 1.8 petrol mk2 late 07 - Throttle Body assy or what? - drogers

Had car go into 'limp' mode and dashboard said Engine Systems failure

Took it to Ford dealer - they plugged it in and said fault was Throttle Body Assembly so new one was fitted at cost of £384

That was last friday, then today it again went into limp mode same message on dashboard

Took it back to Ford dealer who is convinced fault code was right and that the new throttle body fitted was a faulty one.

Car now with dealer who is running tests

Can anyone suggest waht it may be thats wrong?

Car has done 20K only and has been mine since new alaways serviced to schedule

Update on my car problem - the ford dealer says I need a new wiring loom and if that doesnt work then it will need a new PCM at approx £1000

They did say the old one could be sent away and be tested before buying a new one for £1000

Like I said on my original posting can anyone offer me advice on this ?????

Thanks

Hello,

I'm right now having exactly the same issues with my 2007 Focus 2.0 Titanium.

Two weeks ago I had the "Engine Systems Fault" message then car went into speed limited mode. Evans & Halshaw ford dealers said it required a new throttle control, at roughly £400.

After fitting this it broke down again within 3 days with the same messages. This time Evans &H said the fault code indicated a new PCM is required, at £1500 including fitting and VAT !!!

I'm going to try and contact Ford today and ask them what is going on with these cars.

Anyone have any other ideas please?

Let me know how you get on please

I was told my car needed a new PCM at cost of £1000

next day dealer said that 2008 models were £1000, mine luckily ? was just £397

SO had new PCM fitted BUT Ford have superceded PCM part number 6 times and the latest PCM was not recognised by my car ...........because Ford modiried the PCM sso much it has lost compatibility with earlier models (mine was built in June 07)

This is with Ford Technical now-I have been off the road for over a week and feel now I can claim a hire car off Ford

one point I cannot get my head around is how cost of my PCM went from 1000 to 397 seems a LOT of difference on a model change

Moved to Technical.

Update

Had throttle boddy assy part number 1537636 at £252 fitted

problem remained

had PCM pt number 1712930 at £313 fitted

Car is now running seemingly OK

This is a 1.8 petrol 57 plate bought new by me jan 2008, (pre facelift) but I know it was actually built in June 2007

Given the 53 replies on HJ re this problem (affetcs 1.6P/1.8P/2.0P and maybe otherssurely FORD need to address this as soon the cost of the fix will be more than the worth of the car.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what PCM stands for?

Used to mean Pulse Code Modulation when I had a job.

Powertrain Control Module and it is unlikely to be at fault. Most problems are wiring and/or connectors.

I've now been told that a new PCM could cost £700 or £1500 with fitting and VAT, depending on the model required. However after reading your latest note re compatibility I'll go along and ask the dealers about it. My car is a 2007 model.

Also, I've twice seen on the Internet that fitting a new PCM only treats the symptoms and not the cause and faulty wiring could be the real cause. I'll put this to the dealers as well and see what reply I get.

I've emailed Ford but no reply as yet. I'll try a phone call as well.

Sorry to hear you have same problems

Mine is a (built) june 2007 bought in jan 2008 with a 57 plate

The PCM ford dealer fitted cost me £397, I have done 350 miles since repair and it runs ok

yours could be the wiring , mine was checked and was ok so after the throttle body was changed the PCM was too - part numbers in my details above

I cant see why the PCM prices go from 397 to 1500 £

re your last point - surely if the wiring was faulty fitting a bew PCM wouldnt solve problem just think about it

My ford dealer says they fit 3 PCMs a month on this

waste of time contacting ford - just dont ever buy another one

thanks for reply.

I'm waiting for the new PCM to be installed now, it is the cheaper version I'm told, let you know what happens, fingers crossed.

You are right about Ford, they referred me the dealer, shoddy car, shoddy company !

Hi people,

I'm a little late to this subject but I feel my Focus (a 2008, 1.8 Zetec) is on the verge of needing a new PCM.

Could you all please tell me what symptoms you had that required a new PCM? I'm getting an erratic idle as detailed here:

My Vehicle - 1.6 Focus Zetec/Sport Petrol 55 plate.

I had the same issue. i had my throttle body replaced at a cost of £200. - same issue after replacement. the wiring loom which connects the throttle body to the rest of the car had micro-fractures this is because the wiring is crap/degrades over time.

The wiring loom is sectional, and really easy to fit. the loom will cost around £70-£120. it is recommended to get a genuine ford part from the dealer... i know. but it will be beneficial for you in the long run. the car has been running fine for +2 years without any further issues

This would be the best/cheapest place to start, you may wish to have at the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor which is housed above the Air filter box. I have heard that this can also cause issues similar to the one you are expiriencing. - MAF sensor replacement - £400. Best to check what the error is first before you go down this route.
