I have a three year old Focus (1.8 TDCi 135k) which a mechanic noticed has a serious rust problem on the sump pan. Said he'd never seen it on a car only 3 years old, it's high mileage but it has a panel underneath so the sump should be protected.
The rust is quite deep not just on the surface, I have been scraping it off somewhat nervously.... I know its not that expensive for a new one but surely this shouldn't happen on a 3 year old car? Anyone seen a similar problem? I might go back to the dealer who did the last service in January (major one at 125k) and ask why they didn't spot it... Read more
I've seen on some LR forums about many people blanking of the egr with a plate/kit and was wondering what the implications of this are ?
Possible MOT emissions failure ?
Apparently, improved performance can be gained.
Anyone got any experience ?
Thanks........ebt Read more
These egr valves also aid the engine temp to stay in limits by reusing the burnt gases again these are alot cooler second time in I believe you also need it programming after blanking there's a place near me that does the computer bit I've blanked a few never had. Complaint but if it was mine if my valve wen wrong I'd replace it not blank it
This car frustrates. It will run for 3 weeks with no problem, then all of a sudden it has this issue. It will initially start to choke whilst driving along, which is the sign of things to come. It will then rev itself to high revs, then low, then high, then it will stop completely. The next stage is that you then cannot start the engine again - it will just turn over as if you have run out of fuel. Call the AA, wait 20 mins, by the time they arrive, it will start again and then drive perfectly fine to another 3 weeks or so. In reality, the not starting issues are random and can happen any time, but usually a few weeks apart. It will usually start from cold, but after a short drive of say 8 miles, if you switch off, then go to start, it will also have this problem. Has happened in the petrol station a couple of times, whereby it wont start after you have filled up. On every occasion that someone wil expertise has turned up, it always starts. - So frustrating. I will add the technical bit after this. Read more
On the older Clio the most common fault is either crank sensor, coolant sensor or wiring loom over near side suspension strut.
The coolant sensor goes to either approx -10 or plus 133 degrees due to water ingress into the sensor ! It will NOT flag as a fault so can only be detected by live data readings. If the crank sensor does not work the fuel pump won't run.
Whe wiring loom corrodes where it runs over the near side struts and causes intermittent running issues.
Coolant sensor is the most common and will cause it to not start and make the idle speed erratic.
I have a Mitsubishi Colt 2007 semi automatic that has developed a loud whurring/whining noise whilst driving. It starts more or less as soon as you begin to drive, gets louder when accelerating and quieter when decelerating. It's loudest around 40/45mph then gets drowned out by the engine noise itself around 60/65mph. I've tried driving the car in manual mode and also changed the tyres around, both of which made no change.
I regularly run up and down a motorway to and from work, but have never heard this noise before. We have just been away for a week and the noise was there every day!
Any ideas on what could be the cause? Read more

Thanks everyone for comments.
Due to various reasons such as "engine never heating up properly", mainatainence, service history etc I have decided to stay away from it as it may not be worth the hassle....
I recently had my 2004 VW Touran Tdi car serviced, break pads replaced etc. Nothing major. But when I got the car back I started hearing a humming noise from the engine, which felt like I was in the wrong gear. The car went back in to have a new cam belt put in, and the mechanic explained alternator should be replaced soon too. When i drove the car home, the engine was making another new noise, like something was hitting a fan (the noise would change depending on speed). Then it lost all power when it came to a standstill at traffic lights. Some how I got it going and returned to garage - at one traffic light on hill, i though I was never going to make it. Turning it on/off helped. Once car got going, it drove normally. ... Read more
sounds like wrong oil or too low an oil level. ive worked for vag or 12 years or so and know the correct oil is crucial . should be 5w-40 or 5w-30 full sythetic oil. turbo could have seized due to lack of oil explaininlg noise and ack of power. maybe the cambelt has been done wrong or a tensioner has moved or failed.

2005, 52000 miles - lovingly cared for... dreadful noise in neutral, having now seen previous posts am guessing it's Input Shaft Bearing problem. Are others having this problem - have you found solutions? Are dealers being helpful as previous posts say some dealers have repaired under extended warranty? Any recommendations for places to fix it? Does it need to be fixed immediately? Any help/advice much appreciated! Read more

After unsatisfactory conversation with Honda Customer Service call centre, was put through to a lovely lady at Honda UK....
We have a 10 plate Pug 3008, 16THP Exclusive, Petrol (the joint BMW/PSA engine). We love the car, and another day I might write up a review on it, but thats not the topic of this posting
Topic is warranty
The car has suffered 3 breakdowns in the 18 months we have owned it (bought it on approved used scheme 1 year old from Peugeot). Each time the fault has been engine related, and has been repaired under warranty. Not a great record for a nearly new car I know :-(
The warranty expires in Feb 2013, a few months away, and we are considering selling it before then. What is the best way to extend the warranty if we decide to keep it? Whose independant warranties cover most issues, whose include roadside recovery? home recovery (if it goes in to "limp home" mode and you get home). Whose policies provide courtesy cars? etc
the only "brand" I know is Warranty Direct, so looking for some recommendations
Thanks... Read more
The Peugeot warranty is run by car car plan, Google the phone number, then go to saynoto0870 and get the landline number, ask them nicely and they will e-mail you a copy of the terms and conditions. My local pug dealer says it is great, but be aware that incomplete service history will make the warranty useless, be sure the services were carried out as per the manufacturers requirements and that you have proof of libricants used and also that the brake fluid was changed at the correct interval. my own car was not covered because the wrong oil was used at the second service and even though it was changed shortly after, that was the getout for them. Still, after reading the warranty terms and conditions did NOT buy the warranty because of that.
Quite an emotive subject this... but am I the only one of the opinion that the standards of driving in the UK in recent years has somewhat deteriorated?
I travel extensively across the globe - and rack up circa 15k miles per year by car on UK roads. With this in mind I have been considering for some time investing in a 'third eye' to effectively 'record' my journeys.... Read more
Thank you.
The digital dash on the Modus has gone really dim (to the point where it's almost impossible to read). I know there is a button which changes the level of brightness but pressing that has no effect. I've been doing some Googling and this appears to be a problem afffecting others - the cre is either to replace the bulbs (not sure this is my problem as they are working but just at a low level) or to replace a relay. Any thoughts? As I'm soon to sell the car I really don't want to spend any serious money on it now. Read more
Sumps are like exhausts. They only corrode if they don't get hot. Alloy sumps can be a pain because people virtually always over-tighten the plug because they've frightened of it working loose.Tight steel nut in alloy thread either results in galling.
Try driving the car a bit harder or buy a car with an engine appropriately sized to your needs and the corrosion will cease.
