I have a Mitsubishi Colt 2007 semi automatic that has developed a loud whurring/whining noise whilst driving. It starts more or less as soon as you begin to drive, gets louder when accelerating and quieter when decelerating. It's loudest around 40/45mph then gets drowned out by the engine noise itself around 60/65mph. I've tried driving the car in manual mode and also changed the tyres around, both of which made no change.
I regularly run up and down a motorway to and from work, but have never heard this noise before. We have just been away for a week and the noise was there every day!
Any ideas on what could be the cause? Read more

Thanks everyone for comments.

Due to various reasons such as "engine never heating up properly", mainatainence, service history etc I have decided to stay away from it as it may not be worth the hassle....

I recently had my 2004 VW Touran Tdi car serviced, break pads replaced etc. Nothing major. But when I got the car back I started hearing a humming noise from the engine, which felt like I was in the wrong gear. The car went back in to have a new cam belt put in, and the mechanic explained alternator should be replaced soon too. When i drove the car home, the engine was making another new noise, like something was hitting a fan (the noise would change depending on speed). Then it lost all power when it came to a standstill at traffic lights. Some how I got it going and returned to garage - at one traffic light on hill, i though I was never going to make it. Turning it on/off helped. Once car got going, it drove normally. ... Read more

sounds like wrong oil or too low an oil level. ive worked for vag or 12 years or so and know the correct oil is crucial . should be 5w-40 or 5w-30 full sythetic oil. turbo could have seized due to lack of oil explaininlg noise and ack of power. maybe the cambelt has been done wrong or a tensioner has moved or failed.

2005, 52000 miles - lovingly cared for... dreadful noise in neutral, having now seen previous posts am guessing it's Input Shaft Bearing problem. Are others having this problem - have you found solutions? Are dealers being helpful as previous posts say some dealers have repaired under extended warranty? Any recommendations for places to fix it? Does it need to be fixed immediately? Any help/advice much appreciated! Read more

After unsatisfactory conversation with Honda Customer Service call centre, was put through to a lovely lady at Honda UK....

We have a 10 plate Pug 3008, 16THP Exclusive, Petrol (the joint BMW/PSA engine). We love the car, and another day I might write up a review on it, but thats not the topic of this posting

Topic is warranty

The car has suffered 3 breakdowns in the 18 months we have owned it (bought it on approved used scheme 1 year old from Peugeot). Each time the fault has been engine related, and has been repaired under warranty. Not a great record for a nearly new car I know :-(

The warranty expires in Feb 2013, a few months away, and we are considering selling it before then. What is the best way to extend the warranty if we decide to keep it? Whose independant warranties cover most issues, whose include roadside recovery? home recovery (if it goes in to "limp home" mode and you get home). Whose policies provide courtesy cars? etc

the only "brand" I know is Warranty Direct, so looking for some recommendations

Thanks... Read more

The Peugeot warranty is run by car car plan, Google the phone number, then go to saynoto0870 and get the landline number, ask them nicely and they will e-mail you a copy of the terms and conditions. My local pug dealer says it is great, but be aware that incomplete service history will make the warranty useless, be sure the services were carried out as per the manufacturers requirements and that you have proof of libricants used and also that the brake fluid was changed at the correct interval. my own car was not covered because the wrong oil was used at the second service and even though it was changed shortly after, that was the getout for them. Still, after reading the warranty terms and conditions did NOT buy the warranty because of that.

Quite an emotive subject this... but am I the only one of the opinion that the standards of driving in the UK in recent years has somewhat deteriorated?

I travel extensively across the globe - and rack up circa 15k miles per year by car on UK roads. With this in mind I have been considering for some time investing in a 'third eye' to effectively 'record' my journeys.... Read more

The digital dash on the Modus has gone really dim (to the point where it's almost impossible to read). I know there is a button which changes the level of brightness but pressing that has no effect. I've been doing some Googling and this appears to be a problem afffecting others - the cre is either to replace the bulbs (not sure this is my problem as they are working but just at a low level) or to replace a relay. Any thoughts? As I'm soon to sell the car I really don't want to spend any serious money on it now. Read more

We bought this car from new 2 years ago and have completed some 18k miles. During the last few weeks we have noticed upon starting some clutch judder in 1st gear although after having driven some way this does not recur.

We mentioned this at the 2nd service a couple of weeks ago but typically the garage could not replicate the problem. However my wife had a scary moment when the judder occured as she was pulling across a junction and it took a moment fro the clutch to "bite".... Read more

Hi, saw your post and wondered if you got a solution. I have a '10' plate Nissan Micra K12 1.2 Visia with this same problem. The clutch judder started after just 9,500 miles. We have had it back to the main dealer 3 times (Manufacturers warranty runs out in April 2013). Share your safety concerns also regarding busy road junctions.

1. First time at the main dealer they reset the engine control parameters as they thought it was a tick-over issue (revs too low) - only happens when setting off from rest in first gear. Outcome: no real improvement....

Hi,

About me:

I am a city dweller with a family of 2 small twins. So pram + car seat will be in our life for next 3-4 years. I will be driving mostly on weekends for shopping and long tours once a month. I expect my annual mileage to stay around 2000 miles and not more.

I am prepared to spend upto 10K (including first year's comprehensive insurance and warranty)

I am looking for a car that

1 is very safe
2 is very reliable
3 will fit 4+pram+luggage or 4+2
4 has low maintenance vehicle (obviously)
5 low insurance (first time driver)

Looks don't matter at all - not literally but almost.

===

From last few weeks I have been reading though forum to finalize my first family car. And based on review had decided to go for Toyota Avensis. But quickly found out that even its huge boot wont be enough for keeping huge twin pram and luggage.

So starting all over again, now I am looking for 7 seater MPV. With rear 2 seats folded, I should be able to keep twin-pram and luggage.

Also, I need 1.8 Petrol Automatic (2.0 only as a last resort)

So far I have considered:

Toyota - Corolla Verso
Toyota - Verso
Mazda 5

One of friend recently bought Mazda 5 (manual) and he is happy with it. But I am not sure how petrol auto holds up and also 1.8 is rare.

I could not find very good review about Corolla Verso and Verso (kinds of reviews I found about Avensis). Are these cars not good enough than rivals?

I would like to know if I can consider

VW Zaphira,
Ford Grand C-Max (petrol auto is not available - pls correct me)

Anything that I am missing?

Hi

I am looking to buy a used lpg converted car. There are two option either buy a petrol or get a ready made factory fitted lpg cars.I think getting afactory fit lpg will be better than getting someone to convert a petrol car. PLease advise on this , which option is best?... Read more

I don't think it is the same with ther Astra factory LPG (which actually has a pretty poor reputation) but I do know on the Volvo factory LPG systems you did get the same power on petrol and LPG.

The engine had a slightly different map on LPG and the power came in about 300 rpm higher but the peak power and torque were exactly the same figures.
