I have a zafira 53. New starter motor installed a few weeks ago. Today when I arrived home and parked the car. I tried to turn engine on again, wouldn't turn over. Then the air conditioning decided to blow out cold air, when it failed to work previously.Still can't start car. Stabilbity Traction System icon lit for most of 30 mile journey. Is it an electrical problem? Had this problem before hence garage installed mew starter motor but the problem has occurred again.Any help graetfully recieved.Many thanks.

The engine isn't turning at all. I was told it may be the alternator ?

Towed to garage starter motor had burnt out, this was a new one not a recon. Replaced under warranty. Also had a ignition switch replaced. I was informed unless you go to a bona fide vauxhall garage diagnostics may not show true extend of problems. Thank you Alan for suggesting diagnostic test.

We had the same failure last month, with our 53 reg Zafira.

Started the car, noticed the car was a little noiser than normal. Drove 2 miles, and then the car engine stalled. Car would not start, and smell of burning electrics from under bonnet. We replaced the starter motor (and advised by Vauxhall dealer) to replace ignition switch too - otherwise Vauxhall would not give us a guarantee on starter motor!

Cheeky SOBs. They obviously know something's up with their ignition switches. Now, something that can produce an electrical short would surely warrant a recall? Did they learn nothing from the recent Toyota debacle?

I would be interested to know what make of battery is fitted to your car ?

Certain makes have a terminal post convertor , from square to round. One sits over the top of the other. Its the most hideous design I have everseen and I have experinced so many bizzare electrical faults on cars when these battiiers are fitted ! the over post corrodes and gets a high resistance. You wont ever see it as the battery looks totally normal !

Zafiras do suffer with alternator issues, but sound slike yours has to be a connection or bad earth issue some where along the line.

Somewhat off topic but I do feel compelled to add that Astras of this age also have dodgy electrics, in that the starter motors, alternators, and wiper motors fail early.

I'm not going to say it's a Vauxhall thing, as it only affects certain models and certain components as far as I can tell.

But it may be a cost-cutting thing. Who knows what they're up to. Do they build it in or just b***** it up.
