I've been scanning HJ and Autotrader religiously along with 'Googling' any reviews that I can get my hands on online.

I need to pick up a good little hatchback, economical with fair acceleration for around the £3.5 K mark and would welcome your opinions. I have had loads of MK4 Golfs which have been great but very costly in terms of the regular faults and annoying TEE lights.... Read more

Cheers I'll get a test drive. I did test out a Skoda VRS - which is the 1.9 TDi engine I believe and it was pretty impressive!

Temperature has dropped this week. Big diesel engines loafing along in cool temperatures struggle to reach 90C.

I've known industrial engines struggle to achieve coolant temperatures of over 50C when left idling for extended periods in sub zero temperatures. Used to cause the dreaded phenonenom of bore glazing whereby partially burned diesel formed a varnish on the cylinder bores leaving a shiny surface which couldn't hold a film of oil....

Excessive of white smoke on cold start in te mornig, and also rough idle. After 2mn it all clear and run sweet the rest of the day, no lacking of power. Had 4 new Ford injectors, glow plgs, cylinders compression checked 27 to 25 psi. With news that the Blackwall Tunnel will be subject to lane closures at times, there is a good argument for the Dartford Crossing tolls to be suspended whilst the games take place ... and the barriers be kept open so to help the flow of traffic.

I have recently bought a 2005 XKR. One of the headlights has signs that water has entered and others I viewed had condensation in the headlights so it seems to be a common problem. Does anyone know of a way to clean them out please? Read more

You need to remove them dry them out then reseal all the joints and make sure the seal where the light bulb fits is intact or do what most people do in that is live with the problem.

Hi all, My local Trading Standards office has advised me that they think the Fullway Snow Trak tyres may be counterfeit. The fact the sybmbols on the tyres are mirror image and in the wrong place (see this photo: www.fullwayfullrun.com/images/fullwaysnowtrak.jpg) is just the sort of thing that makes them suspicious and they are investigating.

So I don't know if the Snow Trak is a copy of the Snowtrak or vice versa - or a copy of something else.... Read more

Thanks, that helpful.

Incidentally the www.fullwayfullrun.com/ site has been hacked - it was off air for a few hours - somebody doesn't like what it's implying. Maybe the tyre is counterfeit after all . .

Just thought I'd report back, as promised, with info on new car I finally bought. I have to confess that in the end I just got fed up with dithering and test drove a Prius (2008 T Spirit with leather seats) then paid the £500 deposit. Few days later I found it would not fit into my parents' garage - 8" too long! Being able to get the car into the space is vital - I care for them and visit every week, staying overnight.; their next-door neighbour is insane and has a habit of pushing nails into the tyres of cars left on their drive (!). So, back to the dealer, hoping for a refund of deposit and final decision to go with Jazz. I had checked on here and found that I was not actually entitled to the money back so was persuaded into the only alternative Toyota which fitted the bill: economical, roomy, 5 doors, easy for elderly parents to get in and out of , Auris HSD. Of course, it does NOT have all the bells and whistles I wanted - this would have meant going to T Spirit and I could not afford it.

So this was a compromise and not my choice at all. Now I know you experts are going to say I should have argued the toss for the return of the £500 but I had lost the will to live by this time. ... Read more

Well this thread revived my interest in the Auris HSD, and the local dealer was in "got to reach my target" mood. Also our local regional government were chipping in a 10% subsidy for hybrids. Went with the local equivalent of the UK T4 spec, with the "free" TomTom GPS and cruise control included. So it ticked a number of boxes, including folding wing mirrors to ease entry to the garage.

Hi all, bought the car in feb 2011, ever since then, the car is difficult to start. Sometimes it fires up first time, after one crank, other times it takes 3 or 4 constant turns. Sometimes I would depress gas pedal once, and that had a 50% success rate, then wiggling the ignition key on start up also worked. Changes / replacements made include (all new)Glow Plugs / Fuel Filter 3 times / fuel Pump / 507.1 oil / Intercooler /Battery /crankshaft sensor / Shell diesel / clean inlet manifold / double check all seals / serviced reg...

I generally do 90 miles of motorway driving a day, without a blip, averaging 50mpg overall. Sometimes, when constantly driven hard, ie 3000rpm + over 45mins in 6th gear (won't tell you the speed!)the car goes into limp mode, but is still lively!... Read more

Could the glow plug loom be damaged? I understand this can happen easily when it is removed to replace the plugs. Then I guess you'd see white smoke on startup from unburned diesel. Does the outside temperature make any difference to the ease of starting, as it should if glow plugs were an issue?

Possibly an air leak in the fuel system, allowing fuel to drain back to the tank and create an airlock. Not sure if this would be an issue since, when I start my car (Leon 1.9TDI 150), I hear the (in-tank?) fuel pump kick in and prime the system before I start the engine & I guess the 130hp engine would be similar....
