Can anyone advise please. I have removed a Lucas diesel fuel injector pump - I have locked the engine at TDC as prescribed by the manual. I am puzzled by the pundits who suggest inserting 2 bolts through the fuel pump sprocket to 'lock the fuel pump in position' . When I took the pump off (what a pig). I then removed the centre nut and ended up with sprocket/flange bolted together BUT seperate from the pump - the keyway is obviously still there on the pump BUT surely any reconditioned pump will have been turned so how will I know that it is set up right? i.e my engine is at TDC and if it was running should be about to squirt fuel to No1 cylinder? Does ONE rotation of the pump = fuel to all cylinders? Help please! Read more
Hi Gents, just wondering if anyone can help me, airbag light on cruise control not working, all points to a duff clockspring. After consulting the finest brains in my local Ford dealers, i find out i have two options one with a steering angle sensor, one without and furthermore they cant tell me which one my car is fitted with, or what a steering angle sensor does. All i got was a load of waffle about having to have it callibrated [ more exspense] after the repair completed. Anyone point me in the right direction, many thanks guys
If its an 09 surley its still under warranty ?
I have a citroen relay 2.2 hdi 2007, and when cold i start it as normal and it starts immediatly every time, however the van has a missfire at idle only when cold, it clears as i increase the revs to say above 1500rpm, once warm its totally gone even at idle, the van pulls well, also regardless whether its hot or cold on idle i have a Diesel knock which to me seems louder that usual, has anyone got any ideas what may be causing this?, please note i have had a code reader cheack for fault codes and there are none present Read more
I would suspect a faulty injector, especially if it only does it at a certain speed.

Hi,
Can anyone give me an idiots guide of how to test the glow plugs ?... Read more
Be very careful - this is a late VAG diesel and it will have low voltage (ie less than 12V) plugs. Typically, they will be rated at 5V or 7V.
The system is designed such that they initially receive 12V to heat them up quickly but the voltage is then reduced by mark/space ratio control to give a mean value equal to the rated voltage of the plugs. On the latest engines the switching is sequenced between the plugs to give a uniform load on the system....
I would appreciate your advice.

If the water pump does not turn freely, it can dislodge the toothed cam belt and cause catastrophic engine damage. Consequently, it is sensible to change the water pump (plus tensioners and pulleys), when you change the cam belt.
The thermostat on these engines has a finite life and tends to stick open. An open thermostat will prevent the engine from reaching its optimum operating temperature....

you need to take it off and pressure test it.
failing that you could bypass it but bare in mind you will have removed the oil cooler so keep an eye on the temperatue especially in traffic. clean the water pipes in and out of the cooler once its bypassed, drive it for a bit and then check if cooler. if oil has formed in the pipes / started leaking out you know its that.
After all the hype from VW concerning the performance advantages of piezo injectors over solenoid actuated injectors, I find it slightly satisfying to see a design "U" turn and a reversion to the more reliable solenoid actuated devices.
I wonder if the cost of retrofitted replacements together with the risk of litigation (especially in the US where the attached document originates) has initiated this change of policy.... Read more
Ben, if your vehicle is MY '05 (10th digit in VIN) it will have Bosch solenoid actuated injectors. A confirmation can be made if you lift the lid of the ECU container - Bosch ECU for Bosch injectors, Siemens for the others. A paper label on the ECU identifies its maker.
If you have a hissing noise you have a boost leak which will reduce engine output and may illuminate the MIL. The wire "horseshoe" clips on the rubber boost pipe couplings fret the aluminium ears on the hose ends, causing the joint to spring apart under conditions of high boost. Look here carefully and fit new "O" rings - they're not dear and are available over the counter from a VW dealer. New hoses are expensive - but improvisation pays......
Recently bought a Seat Leon with the 1.9 VW diesel in 150hp form. However, I am convinced the car is not running right as it seems sluggish across the board and does not accelerate hard in the lower gears as would be expected of a reasonably powerful turbodiesel.
The car will still do 70+ on the motorway so does not seem to be in limp mode. Also, there seems to a quite a loud whistling noise under acceleration as the turbo boosts.... Read more
The CEL light is not lit while driving - I'll need to check if it illuminates on start-up.
MAF has been replaced in the past, but could still be faulty....

Well done, nothing like that feeling of 'how much would it have cost if a garage had done it'.
