Hi,

This vehicle developed a power steering issue earlier this year when dash warning light would illuminate and power steering would not work .It only lastest for seconds with the light going out and steering returning to normal.... Read more

Hi, I picked up a second hand (from 2006 low mileage car ) and had it fitted today to include flush of fluid system and a refill. Power steering is now back to normal with no dashboard lights on !.

I find it amazing that with all the diagnostics available to mechanics nobody could tell me it was a fault in the power steering pump electrics !! I am glad I took the cheaper option and fingers crossed it will last .I have at least got a two month warranty....

I have a Mk4 Golf 1.4 petrol engine thats done 126k.

The engine consumes 1 litre of oil after driving 850 miles, is this normal or should something be done. There are no oil leaks.... Read more

Mine has about 100k on it and when warmed up if you disconnect the breather pipe you can feel a gentle but steady output.

That doesn't sound right. The breather hose can act as a inlet or outlet depending on the position of the PCV valve and inlet manifold pressure....

I believe that currently the oil in my car is 15-40 semi-synthetic. The halfords listing in the store says either 15-40 or 10-40 semi-synthetic. I have just spoken to Kwikfit about an oil change and it would seem that they would use 0-40. (I did not ask about type so don't know if semi or full synthetic) Car has done 91,000miles and uses oil. What is the correct option? Read more

Find out what ACEA-A? grade Vauxhall actually specify for your engine - rather than part-synthetic or fully synthetic.

0W-40 is generally more expensive to get the wider range of viscosity, and usually fully synthetic. It's great using it throughout an engine's life but will be a waste of money - particularly in an engine that's using oil....

Hi

Yesterday my 306 HDI has developed a loud ticking which I can hear at idle nad it increases in frequency with the engine rpm. It is loudest at 1800 and then is masked somewhat by engine noise at 3000rpm. I only had the bottom pulley replaced around 4-5 years ago so surely its not this again?!¬! What else could it be? I am taking it to a garage tomorrow as the car sounds very bad and I am scared of a breakdown or engine damage. How can I try to make sure the garage is correct in its diagnosis and doesn't try to rip me off with a puley when i don't need one? Is there anything I could look for myself?... Read more

"HDI's are known to have ticky injectors."

Really? First I've heard of this....

Recently I purchased a second-hand Ford C-Max (58 plate) from a well advertised dealership but soon found that unfortunately it had a number of faults.

On approaching the dealership they have been unwilling to address the issues. From seeking advice I understand that leaves me the option of either a Section 75 claim from my credit card company (since I paid the deposit by card) or pursuing the Small Claims track of the County Court.... Read more

Evening all. I just wanted to get the group consensus on the respective reliability of these two engines as fitted to the Focus II and Volvo S40 (amongst other cars).

At 5 years, 80,000 miles, there is little difference in purchase price between the two engine sizes in either model of car, although 2.0 volvos are more numerous than 1.6s, with the opposite trend in Focii. I've driven both engines in various cars and enjoy both experiences. The 1.6 is what I would call "fine" in performance terms, whereas the 2.0 is "plenty"!... Read more

Had a 1.6 psa engine in C4 Grand Picasso at 65k, with no problems of any kind. Great lively engine for a diesel and found the 2.0 alittle sluggish in city driving.

A Honda dealer maybe able to make some adjustments to the ECU but he will not be able to reprogramme fuel and ignition.

If you were able to access the software and cables and get the necessary unlocking codes the likelyhood is you would make it worse. Even if it idled faster it may fail the MOT after your tinkering. Without gas analysing kit and years of training and experience this type of tuning is not for the DIY'er....

Where to start....

I have been working on the car in question for some time. It came to me as a non runner. 2 garages have had a look and found nothing. They demanded more money to keep looking and some just cant afford that.

When put on the diagnostics the car comes up with no faults.

When the car is cranked over, all readings on my mates snap on diagnostic seem correct.

We used a NOID to check the trigger signal to the injectors and all appear ok.

When the fuel feed or return to the tandem pump is removed fuel sprays out therefore lift pump is working and filter not blocked. Fuel is clean diesel too. No engine oil in it or veg oil present.

With the dreaded easi start hastily sprayed in to the inlet the engine will run but it is running on the easi start. As soon as this is removed the engine stops.

I think i'm getting close to the problem. Maybe very close (tandem pump??). I cant see it being all 4 injectors especially as there are no fault codes.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can shed a light!

I am not a "petrol head" so I appologise if my questions seem stupid but like many people I am disappointed by the gap between "real" mpg and claimed mpg on new cars.

I bought a new Hyundai i10 1.2 and like some people on the forum I am disappointed with fuel consumption. BUT do I have unrealistic unrealistic expectations? I average 42 mpg driving on A and B rural roads with a few stops and starts. I guess this is what is "combined" driving? The car is still "new" (1000 miles) and my typical journey length is only 5-10 miles. I change through the gears quickly and am in 5th gear when I go over 40 mpg - changing up gears at 1500-2000 rpms. I watched HJ's video on eco driving and think I am doing the right sort of thing to maximise mpg.... Read more

shfcsv - Doesn't your car have an indicator to show you when to change up - top right in the same panel as the odometer? Mine (two weeks old) does but it is useless. Being guided by it always results in a laboured engine. Too early to judge fuel consumption.
