This passed me by at the time, so apologies if it's been covered before: here's a link to Fifth Gear's test of V-Power and Ultimate diesel versus ordinary supermarket stuff, using a newish Citroen C5 2.2 as the testbed (4 minute video clip).

Both the premium fuels gave 161bhp compared with 155 on the ordinary stuff. What WAS upsetting was that V-Power and Ultimate were 100.9 pence per litre at the time :-/... Read more

Ling is showing cars from £396 deposit followed by 35 X £132.

As Tony says, if you can't raise the deposit the finance co will take the view you won't be making the monthly payments

Hi, I've found a car for sale privately that I'm interested in buying. The guy selling it had it as a company car that he leased. The car is just over 3 years old and the lease period has come to an end. I've done an HPI check and there is no outstanding finance.

On the V5 document, it has the lease company listed as the present keeper (with no previous keepers). So, there is no evidence that he actually owns the car. I haven't dealt with lease cars before, is this normal or should he be listed as the keeper now the lease period has ended? I asked him about it and he said it was normal.... Read more

The only reason that the seller would have the V5 is that he is a motor trader, otherwise he would only be in possession of the V5C/2.

He is obviously a total liar, uncovered by your very sensible research, and you should report all the facts to your local Trading Standards office, before he is allowed to continue this illegal operation much longer. Oh....and don't buy the car!

Sounds as though you have introduced an air leak somewhere, probably on the filter. Take it off again, make sure the seals are clean and refit it. If its the metal canister type rotate it a little at a time as you tighten the bolt to make sure it seals properly. If it has a Bosch pump you can get air into the system via the leak off pipes but not enough to stop it running, providing you have connected the pipes to the correct places you shouldn't have a problem.

I bought a 51 reg Clio 1.2 petrol with 66000 miles and picked it up exactly 2 weeks ago today. We've not driven it a lot during the past couple of weeks but I've felt that it's been shuddering a little when driving along. On Friday there were a couple of occasions where it failed to start once when the engine was warm but then started and I thought nothing of it

Yesterday I drove it about 10 miles to a friends to pick something up. When I went back to the car 5 minutes later it refused to start. The engine is cranking for a few seconds but doesn't catch and start. I think this model may have some kind of system that doesn't allow you to keep cranking it as it doesn't seem to let you do it for more than a few seconds.... Read more

Forgot to mention that on the Friday when it didn't start a couple of times, the revs would drop straight away like it was threatening to stall but then would settle.

Hello all

My dad removed the battery from my clio as he was trying to get to something underneath it. He replaced it absolutely fine and it's all connected again fine. The problem is the car is now not starting and the "STOP" light has come on. It sounds as though the car is trying to start as it clicks. Also the clock light comes on and I can still lock the car with my remote key fob so I'm guessing the battery works ok?... Read more

I suspect your dad has disturbed the eartch (-) connection to the body/engine. Very close inspection required. Regards Peter

Fuel costs are so high that supermarket filling stations are the only way of saving a few bob. Tesco/morrisons etc offer discounts.HJ does not like supermarket petrol.Does it not all come from the same refinery?I use Waitrose staion which is Esso(I believe).Would it be advisable to fill up with super instead of premium u/leaded occasionly?Or would this be a waste of "bite the bullet" money? I only do about 6000 per annum mileage. Read more

My 2008 VW Golf TDI was nearly empty. I made the mistake of putting about 13L of un-leaded petrol in it. I was given the advice that if I filled the tank up diesel the car would be ok. It seems to be driving ok, but is taking 3 to 4 attempts to start. Also the oil warning light came on last time I started it. I'm worried I've caused damage, and would appreciate any advice. My son did exactly the same with his Mazda 6 - he put £20 worth of petrol in an empty tank. However he followed my advice and filled it to the brim with diesel. I told him to top it up at EVERY occasion and after a few fill ups it was fine. That was 3 years ago and the engine runs fine. If you'd have filled it with 75% petrol then you would have needed to drain the tank. 25% is just about ok - it'll be a bit clattery but as long as you don't thrash it it should be fine - and that's from someone who's been working on diesels for 40 years.
