I have been self employed but recently signed on for JSA as I had virtually no work since the new year with no sign of improvement. My insurance came up for renewal a couple of weeks later an so I got a renewal notice through, however I thought I should inform the insurance company that I was claiming JSA. Result is it now costs me 40% more to insure the car! Went on the money saving websites but no cheaper.
I pay for the insurance annually, have the mileage caped at 6000 (I do around 5000 in the car) and insured for domestic and leisure purposes (no commuting or business use).... Read more
I have a problem thats worrying me,.
I was driving down an dual carriageway A road at speed varying between 43 and 40 miles per hour, most people drive faster than me on this road. the speed limit is 40 in this particular stretch,.... Read more
If it's just a speed gun, then they must stop you there and then and show you the speed off the gun itself. If it has a camera attached to it (which means tripod mounted or in a van), then you can get the ticket in the post.

This cars engine seized at the traffic lights yesterday. Ran out of oil. Is it an economical job to get the engine rebuilt? Seat quoting £3400 plus vat for new engine. Anyone have an experience of this? Read more
My previous two cars didn't burn a drop of oil inbetween services in over 150K miles, didn't stop me checking it weekly - you are a motorist - the clue is in the word "motor". My current car likes a drop (just under half a litre per 1K miles) but then I've yet to own a rover V8 engined car that doesn't burn oil!
I haven't done a thread for a while and it's time for another one of these....

I saw what I think was a Buick Century stationwagon today. Very strange indeed! UK plates though; late 90s.
I have a 2002 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec (petrol) - never had any problems until I went to open the car, the central locking kept making a continous locking sound, the car would not start, turn over, not even any lights on the dashboard and the clock appeared to have reset itself. Since then I have charged the battery and tried to start the car without any luck, now when im trying to start the car the car tried to lock itself continously.

It sounds like the battery is on its last legs, or there is a poor connection on the battery or earth.
Try cleaning the battery conexions & check the earth lead at both ends. Try putting on the headlights & starting the car, do the lights go out, if so suggest you get a new battery.

I bought a car from a car dealer a year ago for £2000, I have just tried to sell it and have found out that it is a cat c car. When I called the dealer he says that he will pay £300 for the car but it is worth £800 do I have any come backs on the dealer? Read more
(a)the commercial practice omits material information,
Marlot ,just checked the 2008 act ,the above is an excerpt from it .you're absolutely right .
The amended act does require dealers to disclose cat c/d cars .
Not only that ,but as I understand it , anything that is to the detriment of a buyer ,that is known to the seller or should be known to the seller.must be disclosed to the buyer.
A much stronger piece of legislation than the the original sale of goods act.?

Hi All,
the steering on my minibus is moving abruptly to the right when I accelarate. The steering fluid , tyres are fine but the cv joint boot has split and grease spilled out. There's no obvious knocking sound. I asked a breakers for cv joint plus drive shaft, he's got one but said ""driveshaft with wheel straight has 3-5mm play at top of brake disc when holding shaft still. no knocking on both locks. obviously under no load tho. boots are good"" Is it worth getting this second hand one of should I go for new or better condition 2nd hand? Thanks in advance, Matt Read more

A few months ago the company I worked for went into liquidation. Being in my late 50s I am struggling to get interviews let alone another job. When my insurances came up for renewal recently I advised the companies of the change of status. The reactions could not have been more different - the company I have a classic car policy with said it would make no difference whilst for my daily driver they initally came back with a hike of over 50%. Eventually they came back with the original premium.
It seems to me that in recent years premiums are often based on what they can get out of you with minor changes causing premiums to be hiked. Changing groups seems to make little difference. It seemed much easier when I first started driving when my local broker looked up the group and went to various charts with group vs age for the premium and then applied the NCB.
