My c3 hdi has suddenly become a pig to get started. it turns over and starts after about 15 -20 seconds with a cloud of black smoke. It also has started smelling when you switch the engine off and get out you can notice a distinct smell coming from maybe the exhaust. also seems to be using a bit more diesel than normal.

I am trying to locate a cylinder head for the above as the current one is cracked.
I can obtain a complete replacement (made in China though) which I would rather avoid and another supplier has now asked me if the valve stems are 7mm or 8mm diameter as two heads were fitted to this model which are not interchangeable.Strangely the supplier offering the replacement from China did not even ask me this question ,so I am confused.... The world of motorsport lost a great talent tonight, Briton Dan Wheldon passed away from unsurvivable injuries sustained in a 15 car pile up during an Indy car race in the USA. A true talent and gentleman sadly taken from the hearts of his family and vast numbers of fans.
RIP Dan, my thoughts go to his immediate family, hope my small tribute shows that Dan was admired all over the world by motorsport fans and those involved in the sport at all levels.

Watched it live. I think it is probably the worst car pile up I have ever seen.
He knew the risks, He had allegedly accepted $5,000,000 to race from the back of the grid, and see other drivers comments about the race. Sorry for Dan, I have seen one of my aquaintences die at very high speed when the driver lost control in germany and went sideways into a tree. Nothing will bring him back, and nothing will stop others racing too. After my friends funeral, we went to the next rally.... Go in Peace Dan......

Buy a NEW filter assembly from Peugeot-yes,it will cost money but at least you'll have peace of mind on your trip.
I have a c3 1.4 Hdi
When I start the engine from cold it takes ages to start.
The started motor is turning over, when you just about give up you hear a clunck under your left foot and then the car starts and runs great, no loss of power. Pulls away ok.
If you restart the engine while warm is starts no problem.
I have checked the low pressure fuel pipes, replaced the spill pipes and injector clips.
It looks like I am getting air in to the diesel or it waits until it has built up pressure before it will start. Any advice would be great. Read more

I haven't driven a Superb but I had the 2.0 CR engine in my last Octavia vRS. It's a lot quieter than the old PD unit, and a bit quieter than the Mondeo and C-Max diesels that I test-drove. It's an excellent engine with seamless power delivery from low revs and minimal turbo lag.
Both are very good cars: you need to get a good long test-drive in each and see which you prefer. If there's anything in it, the Superb may suit a more relaxed style of driving and the Mondeo be preferred by the press-on driver who likes to use high revs and reevels in the sharp, direct steeering that Fords are good at. Rather like a choice between Audi and BMW.
I poured about a quarter of a litre of Castrol Diesel oil into my petrol car in error when topping up the oil. Is this likely to cause problems? What's the difference between oil for petrol engines and diesels anyway?

Thanks, Peter, tht's reassuring to know. The quantity was very small,probably less than I thought. (My engine probably needed a clean anyway! It's a 2000 Corolla, 84K miles.)
