Which is the better car. Anyone driven/owned both?

This the 2 litre diesels, the zetec version V 2.0 CR vag unit Read more

Avant

I haven't driven a Superb but I had the 2.0 CR engine in my last Octavia vRS. It's a lot quieter than the old PD unit, and a bit quieter than the Mondeo and C-Max diesels that I test-drove. It's an excellent engine with seamless power delivery from low revs and minimal turbo lag.

Both are very good cars: you need to get a good long test-drive in each and see which you prefer. If there's anything in it, the Superb may suit a more relaxed style of driving and the Mondeo be preferred by the press-on driver who likes to use high revs and reevels in the sharp, direct steeering that Fords are good at. Rather like a choice between Audi and BMW.

Question Yoyota - Oil
P.Mason {P}

I poured about a quarter of a litre of Castrol Diesel oil into my petrol car in error when topping up the oil. Is this likely to cause problems? What's the difference between oil for petrol engines and diesels anyway?

Thanks,... Read more

Thanks, Peter, tht's reassuring to know. The quantity was very small, probably less than I thought. (My engine probably needed a clean anyway! It's a 2000 Corolla, 84K miles.)

Best wishes,...

I admit my tour of the DVLA (all of the processes) was a while back. 5 years? But it all worked well.

Without going into detail it surprised me. It was a good few hours. We even got to listen in on a few calls on the helpdesk. And there were a lot of people answering calls....

I have 2005 Mazda 6 estate 2.0 diesel. Cambelt changed last month at 56,000 miles and water pump checked.
Recently it has started making a whirring noise on acceleration both in and out of gear. Someone has suggested it could be the alternator bearings or possibly the power steering leaking.
Can anybody shed any light on this noise and what I'm looking at cost wise to get it repaired? Read more

The only difference you will find over a standard air filter is in your wallet.

Hi guys, general advice please on getting the best deal. I need to get a larger car and selected the c4 from my local citroen dealer. It is a 2006 1.6 SX 5dr model up for £4995. I am p/exing a 2007 suzuki which has a p.ex value of £3900 (retail 5k). I don't want the hassle of selling privately so p/ex best option for me. Dealer said they will give £4k for it plus £995 cash, obviously thus paying full windscreen price. Havent progressed any further as going back monday.

Advice on best way to proceed as obviously want something off the price and to pay a smaller case sum as possible. I was thinking the car + £300 cash but is this realistic? The valuation online for the C4 looks like £4k trade. ... Read more

You can get a 2008 C4 for £4299 at CarGiant, in my experience their part exchange prices are very reasonable too.

A few days ago, I was taking my son to school. I parked in a space approx 75 yards from school, and was waiting for a gap in traffic so I could open my drivers door without the passing traffic removing it. While I was waiting, I noticed one of the other parents from school overtake me, slow down whist indicating right to turn up a street about 50 yards further down the road. He was stationary for about 4 seconds waiting to turn right and then a HGV came past me with all its wheels locked and slid straight into the back of the unfortunate gentleman's car. I immediately got out of my car and went to see if the man and his son (who was in the back of the car were alright. The HGV 's driver got out and his imediate response was "sorry pal, it just slid." Now call me cynical, but a "professional" driver should know that on a wet road your braking distance will be vastly increased, therefore you should increase the distance between you and the car in front, so this struck me as a very poor excuse for some completely incompetent motoring. What is the best/worst/daftest excuse for crashing that you have ever heard? Read more

Many thanks again for your time. I am sure the oil was the correct oil for the car, that said I did hear noisy tappets post oil change when the car had been idling for ten minutes or so. A quick blip on the accelerator stopped this though.

I will have a good look at the breaher pipe this weekend if I get a moment. In cumbria, finding a garage with a mechanic in it is a bonus, never mind tools as well, less they are for a tractor.
